I have a directory that has a large number of files, around 1.5 million at this point. If I go to the directory and type in "ls filename" for a filename that I know exists, ls just hangs. I have let it run for over 20 minutes and it never does anything. Up until yesterday the directory was working fine through samba serving up files, but now it doesn't return anything. I have a very large directory with probably millions of small files in it. It's taking forever to run ls on the directory.
Is there an easy script that I can run to split the directory into smaller ones, based on the prefixes of the filenames. My goal is to wind up with something similar to what the Debian archives' pool directory looks like.
Newbie 1st post here. Trying to find the most efficient way to copy a file to a different directory and rename it with a date stamp extension. Looking to accomplish this with one command if possible.

Full path /home/user1/bin/scripts/make_file
would like to move to the following directory /home/user1/bin/scripts/archive/
I'm trying to find out how to use command substitution along with the date command that when I copy the file to the archive directory it gets renamed with a time stamp extension. It should look something like "make_page_12:00:00-24-10-2010" I've tried a few different combinations using the cp and mv commands but can't seem to get it to work the way I want to.

Create a copy of the file above and call it commands.sorted. Use the vi command to manually sort this file. I.e. use yy to copy a line, P or p to paste a line, and dd delete a line. Order the commands with the two lines starting with double quotes first. Then list the rest of the command in alphabetical order.
Anyone have any ideas what he's talking about? Can I copy a file and rename it at the same time while copying it to the same exact directory again? Now sure what the two lines things means either. I have an email out to him but it usually takes a long time for him to answer me. I got alot of work to do so everytime I get hung up it kills me.
What is the difference between filename and ./filename? Under what circumstances is one preferred to the other?

I've tried Code: Select allperl -i.bak -pe 's/:/_/' but since I am still learning Perl I'm probably commiting a PEBKAC error.
How would I go about solving this issue with regular expressions using Perl?

I want to rename all files in a directory to "random" names(the point is that the name does not exist, it can be anything). In my case is it *.wav file i want to rename, i basically want to burn cd's to my pc with cdparanoia, then rename them and put them in a directory with other songs i have which also have been given random names. 1. Create a playlist in Rhythmbox with some songs in it.
2. Close Rhythmbox.
3. Rename the directory with the songs in it.
4. Open Rhythmbox.
5. The songs are gone from Rhythmbox' index and can be found under "Missing Files". New versions of the songs show up, but this is not very helpful, as the playlist is empty.
I searched the web and found a known bug which occurs if step 2 is left out (that is, a directory rename with Rhythmbox open). However, in my case, even changing a directory name without Rhythmbox running breaks its file index.

I have some school work that involves creating a script that creates a backup of my /home folder, everything goes well but the problem is with the filename.
I am supposed to create a .tgz with the filename : hostname-day-date-HH:MM:ss.tgz
The .tgz gets created with the correct filename but when I try to unpack it the filename can't be resolved, it's the : that mess things up.
in directory a_dir, have a file named a_file.i can type "source a_file" under directory a_dir and execute successfully.but if i write the command to a Makefile under directory b_dir, the "source" function can't be executed well. it will generate some error message like this:
