View 1 RepliesWe are making an embedded product based on Fedora 10 (this could change, but right now we stick to 10 because it works ok). We have an intel PC board with a build a normal ethernet adapter. Then we have a home build PCI-express card with 4 ethernet adapter build into a Xilinx FPGA (Xilinx Temac) (we got the driver from git.xilinx.com and modified it enough to make it work).
Now, by problem is: How do we control the device names of these ethernet adapters? It would be really nice to have them called eth0, eth1-eth4 in the order mentioned above, such our software always knows which to use for what.
Also: What to we do when the our adapter card is replaced because it is broken? A new card will have new MAC addresses and therefore the adapters will get new names destroying our IP configurations.
I want to set up a home computer as server. I've installed Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04, and can access it through SSH. However, I would like to have a browser based interface for managing things, such as installing a phpBB forum and stuff like that. Also, I want my friends to be able to share files on my home server as well. I know I can do it by using FTP, but I would rather not have them to install a FTP program.

There seem to be many remotes that work under windows but I am having a hard time finding a remote that works with Ubuntu. What are people using to control their Ubuntu-based HTPCs these days?

I feel little silly asking this, I accidently removed from my gnome panel my internet connection, volume control and battery indicator on F11. how can I add this back. It does not show up in the add to panel menu and the applications do not give you back the default feel.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI don't know how this happened, but my keyboard copy and paste functions have stopped working. Oddly enough, I discovered that I can only copy and paste by using the third mouse button. Pressing down on the scroll wheel after highlighting text copies the text, pressing it again pastes it Ican still use the Edit-copy and Edit-paste menu functions.
I'm sure it has something to do with all the tinkering I have been doing with my desktop. I have been experimenting with CompizConfig and Cairo dock, changing my themes and things of this nature.

I cannot get any fan information from 'lm-sensors' or 'sensors', I tried to run 'pwmconfig' and got this:

But I have no tools to control the fan speed from 'acpi'. in particular '/proc/acpi/fan' is an empty directory.
There are no fan info/controls in BIOS either.
I believe the fans do not work as fast as they should and I am trying to find a way to fix this before the cpu cores are melted down from overheating.
Laptop information: HP Pavilion dv2500t
Code:
Laptop is Dell Latitude C600/C500 with Pentium III 850Mhz, 256Kb L2 Cache, 256MB RAM, ATI M3 video card, HD 20005 MB and sound card is EES Maestro 3i. After trying to do something with Windows 2000 which was installed on the machine, I decided to put Linux without keeping windows on the machine. First I try with Xubuntu (latest version) which was working but slowly, then I found that Debian could work fine on that machine. I have installed latest version 5.08 and was surprised how goodly old machine can work. I solved problems with screen resolution (change from 800x600 to 1024x768) but I couldn't find solution how to fix problem with sound.
Actually I don't have sound on the machine. I looked for a linux driver for that sound card and Dell is only providing windows drivers. Then I found that I can solve the problem with ALSA drivers but I couldn't find the easy way (or any way at all) to install drivers and to get back the sound. When I click on 'Volume Control' (top right corner of the screen) I get the message: 'Volume control did not find any elements and/or devices to control. This means either that you don't have the right GStreamer plugins installed, or that you don't have a sound card configured.'
When I do...# iptables -L...I see rules in my INPUT and OUTPUT chains that look scary:ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere...but these rules only apply to the loopback interface. I tested it and the server cannot be reached on open ports from the outside world. How can I make iptables show the interfaces that the rules apply to?Otherwise, every time I do iptables -L it will scare the crap out of me.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have had my thinkpad for just a few short months and, it must be that we are heading into summer, but I am starting to finally run into some overheating issues especially when compiling software for awhile, i.e. kernel.
My question would be, "Is it best to let the built in thermal management take care of the issue, and I just need to know what to tweak, or to put on a script solution such as the tp-fancontrol script?
The computer takes about 5-10 minutes to overheat and the message I get in /var/log/messages is "logger: ACPI group thermal_zone / action THM1 is not defined" then it shuts down.
So, any pointers in the right direction would be appreciated.

View 2 Replies View RelatedII'm a front-end web developer, I've always developed on Windows with technologies like XHTML, CSS, Javascript and Flash, I've dabbled with PHP and MySQL. I am well used to Windows workflows and tools, from Photoshop to Notepad++, Filezilla and WAMP server stacks to After Effects, and a swathe more - but always on Windows.I'm at a point where I think I need to start seriously developing on a Linux box, specifically at the moment to create web apps based on Node.js, but compiling tools and programs has become a task I'm more frequently required to do.
My question? I need to get my hands on a user-friendly install of Linux, but which one? I need common interface developer tools (lists welcome) to replace... well as many tools I have on Windows as possible.I need to be readily connected to the internet, I need OS updates to not destroy my workflow by crashing the OS, as I've seen Ubuntu do to various friends. I want efficiency, I need to be able to customise what I need to in order to perform development tasks.I guess this could be a long list, but - I don't have practical working knowledge of the Linux OS, nor how it "compares" to Windows (excuse my faux pas). I'm obviously willing to learn, but I'm far, far more keen to just... continue interface development, just on Linux instead of Windows.
Have any web interface for squid 2.6 proxy server ?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI set all of my family members up with Linux Mint so that their computers would stop punching themselves in the face, but I'd like to be able to control those computers when my mom calls up and wants to know how to "put her favorites in the drop box." I've got Parallels with WinXP, and Ubunutu VMs, so my OS isn't really a concern (although I'd prefer to use OS X if there was a slick GUI app). What's the best or most practical approach to getting access to these computers from across the country?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an ARM system that has been pre-loaded with some variant of Linux. I don't know the distribution; I can only see the kernel number in dmesg.
In /etc/network/interfaces, I set eth0 to
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
After I save and reboot (or run ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0), I can see that the networking system is searching for a DHCP server and actually obtains a lease on a valid IP address, but when I run ifconfig, the interface has not been assigned the address that it pulled down from DHCP. It has been assigned a 192.168.. address.
I noticed in dmesg that a variable "ip" is passed to the kernel at boot with the same address that is overriding my DHCP address. How can I disable this overriding behavior? I noticed a dynamic environment variable in u-boot called ip. I set it dhcp and saved it to nv storage, but the problem persisted. I tried to set the u-boot environment variable ipaddr to dhcp, but was informed that this wasn't a valid value for the variable. How can I get the interface to be configured through DHCP?
I just wonder, is it possible (using Linux 2.6) to limit overhead done by ethernet interface to one specific core. Ie. I have core2duo CPU, and two ethernet interfaces: eth0 and eth1. Is it possible to move system load caused by packets comming on eth0 to CPU0, so the other core (CPU1) will be idle?
