Ubuntu Multimedia :: Getting Remote Control To Interface With XBMC?
Dec 21, 2010
I just built up an Acer Revo 3600 HTPC using Ubuntu. Right now I'm using a wireless keyboard and mouse but I'd like to get a remote control to interface with XBMC. There seem to be many remotes that work under windows but I am having a hard time finding a remote that works with Ubuntu. What are people using to control their Ubuntu-based HTPCs these days?

I want to set up a home computer as server. I've installed Ubuntu Server Edition 10.04, and can access it through SSH. However, I would like to have a browser based interface for managing things, such as installing a phpBB forum and stuff like that. Also, I want my friends to be able to share files on my home server as well. I know I can do it by using FTP, but I would rather not have them to install a FTP program.

I am really having a tough time getting my MCE remote to work with XBMC. I have got to the point where sometimes it work but then it gets VERY sluggish and my system crashes.
Code:
#This configuration has been automatically generated via
#the Ubuntu LIRC package maintainer scripts.
#It includes the default configuration for the remote and/or
#transmitter that you have selected during package installation.

Canon cameras used to come with a piece of software called remote capture for Windows and MacOS.
You plug in the camera via USB, and then the camera display is on your monitor. From there you can do everything your camera does, like taking pictures of video. Does anyone know if there is linux equivalent software that can do this?
I have found this software, but new cameras aren't supported.

I got into ubuntu-netbook-10.04.2 through the graphical interface ensures that xbmc as the first boot as described below. Autostart XBMC (optional)I did perform this step, since it makes your system only run XBMC. I wanted to be able to select the application By following these instructions, your system will boot directly into XBMC rather than your desktop from now on. It is advised that you delay this step until XBMC is setup as you'd like it.
1. From the desktop click System -> Administration -> Login Screen
2. From the "Security" tab choose "Enable Automatic Login" and select your username.
3. Click "OK" to exit.
4. Logout of your system.
5. From the Login screen choose "Select Session"
6. Choose "XBMC" and click "Change Session"
does anyone know how I can undo ihave webmin so I could edit some script.

First some background: I currently have iTunes running on a Vista box attached to my TV. I have an Ubuntu box running 11.04 and shairport which serves as remote speakers for the iTunes server. This works fairly well as I can control it with my iPhone, or iPad etc. Very slick interface and my wife loves it .
But I would prefer to not use iTunes to as the server. I would like to let that Vista box sleep most of the day. Doing a little bit of reading it sounds like I should be able to use mt-daapd as a replacement for iTunes. So I installed firefly and gave it a shot. I can get it streaming music fine. But I cannot Apple's "Remote" app to add the new library. When I did some poking I read that I should make a file that ends in ".remote" and put my device name + the pairing passcode from my iPhone in this file.
When I enter the "Add Library" mode on my iPhone it should broadcast an mDNS event. And in fact it looks like it does because: avahi-browse -r -k _touch-remote._tcp Can see my iPhone. But when I do a tail -f on the mt-daapd logfile I never see a connection come up. I have tried debug level 8 in the messaging.Still nothing. In my search for a fix I noticed mt-daapd is no longer being developed but there is forked-daapd. This is actually where I found the instructions for pairing via Remote.
Should I bail on mt-daapd? Will there someday be Ubuntu support for forked-daapd?

I am running XBMC-standalone on a minimal Ubuntu installation and everything works as it should almost out of the box ... Now I would like to use my remote to navigate through ultrastardx which I start as an app(within XBMC).
I use linux-input-layer(devinput) with lirc(=necessary to make all buttons work).
So, if I start ultrastardx with the configuration from above my RC does not work at all but when I kill lircd before I start ultrastardx I ll get basic functions like Left, Right, Enter,... This is great but I miss two main functions Jumpto and search. To get them work and tremendously increasing the WAF I would need to send a key-sequence to ultrastardx.
What do I have to do to send such a sequence like "alt+j"?
Is there a way to kill lircd automatically before I start ultrastardy(at the moment I have to this manually )?

Does anyone have the Hauppauge HVR-1600 remote control working in Opensuse 11.1 or 11.2? It acts like it's not finding a firmware file or driver. I grabbed a .bin firmware file from one of the Mythtv sites, but I havn't gotten it to work yet. I put it in the /lib/firmware/KERNEL directory, but maybe I need to move it up one directory.Anyway, I was wondering if anyone else has it working and what was done? I have the other things in place regarding lirc, so I think the only thing holding it up is the device file.

I've got an Emprex 3009URF remote control which I'm using to run XBMC and whilst it works fine for the most part there are a couple of things that I can do with a keyboard/mouse that I'm unable to do with the remote, for instance "right clicking" with the mouse that brings up a context menu, that is totally inaccessible from the remote.
Some things I was able to fix by editing .xsessionrc as instructed by another post elsewhere on the tubes, in the format of:
xmodmap -display :0 -e keycode 127 = space
however I don't know how to find the keycode and I don't know how to map that to a right click event.

Do you know any dvd playback app that can recognize inputs from a remote control (like play, pause e.t.c) and at the same time when I launch it to check the dvd rom and resume playback from last time. I used vlc but it does not seem that works like the way I do.

I am running 64bit Ubuntu and have just installed XBMC and the install has gone great so far. Easy to set up and configure and all my media now works. I have installed lircrc and my remote works when in XBMC.
I have created a file .lircrc in my home share and added the following
begin
remote = mceusb
button = Home
prog = irexec
repeat = 0
config = /usr/share/applications/XBMC Media Center
end

I've been using Linux on a more regular basis for the last two months now and have been able to find replacements for most of the software i use in Windows, or by using Wine. But i have one big problem that is keeping me from switching permanently to Linux. I frequently use remote control software to access and control my computers, both at home and to access my computers from remote places over the internet. I've been using NetOp, and more recently RealVNC. The client, or "viewer" part of RealVNC is working fine in both Windows and Linux. It's the host or server part that i can't get to work properly when it comes to VNC. The vnc.so module doesn't work on my system, x0vncserver program seems rather useless since it refuses to load before i have a network connection and this prevents me from start the program automatically as the wireless connection isn't ready and the vncserver command isn't an option since it doesn't display what i see on the actual screen. So, does anyone have a nice solution to this problem? Either to make VNC work or suggest some software that does. Anyway, it has to work on both Windows and Linux, in Linux it has to display the native x display, there must be built-in encryption and preferably be free or open-source software. I'm using Ubuntu 9.10.

We are making an embedded product based on Fedora 10 (this could change, but right now we stick to 10 because it works ok). We have an intel PC board with a build a normal ethernet adapter. Then we have a home build PCI-express card with 4 ethernet adapter build into a Xilinx FPGA (Xilinx Temac) (we got the driver from git.xilinx.com and modified it enough to make it work).
Now, by problem is: How do we control the device names of these ethernet adapters? It would be really nice to have them called eth0, eth1-eth4 in the order mentioned above, such our software always knows which to use for what.
Also: What to we do when the our adapter card is replaced because it is broken? A new card will have new MAC addresses and therefore the adapters will get new names destroying our IP configurations.

XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server "."

When i start it,i see very strange image,like hundreds of rectangles with parts of images from games,applications,even parts of my Windows desktop (which is on another partition). And after 2-3 seconds,it exits.

I recently installed XBMC and Boxee on my Linux laptop, but neither of them are connecting to the internet. Since I'd like to try XBMC first, I'll talk about that here. When I run the program, I do not have a Live TV icon or link on the side. I can see my Music, Programs, Settings, Pictures, Video and Weather links on the sidebar, but my Weather page is blank as in I do not see any weather forecasts or whatever else ought to be on that page. I thought that maybe since I was running XBMC as a user there might be some permissions issues, so I ran "sudo xbmc" and received an error message "Do_Wait: DRMWaitBlank returned -1, IRQs Don't Seem to be working correctly. Try adjusting the vBlank_mode configuration parameter." No idea what that means. I've tried connecting both via Ethernet and my WiFi.

As for what I am trying to do: I am looking for a way to run scripts and/or launch programs from a cell phone using SMS. I've found a few options close to this, but nothing that really fits what I'm trying to do. It seems I can either get speed or ease of use, but not both. To explain:
If I understand correctly, Evolution has this functionality through email, but email isn't instant. I'm trying, as best as I can, to use my phone almost like a remote; sending email from my phone would create a considerable wait time.
Using Pidgin's Buddy Pounce feature with AIM lets me use SMS to get a quick response, but I'm running into the problem that I can't make its action depend on what the message says. I want to be able to text, say, "Shutdown", and have my computer run a shutdown command, but Pidgin's Buddy Pounce feature doesn't seem to support checking for specific messages. I've been unable to find a plugin that changes this; if there was, it'd probably be my best bet.
Bluetooth is out; my computer's bluetooth adapter died a long time ago. Additionally, some of the things I'd like to do would be when I'm not near the computer, so even if it was functional, it would be limiting.
Anything that requires any apps for android, iPhone, or w/e are out too. I have an LG Dare, and while it's a nice phone, you can basically forget custom apps.
So, to recap, I'm trying to find some way of sending an SMS or email from my phone, have it be received as quickly as possible, and have the computer run a console command based on the content of the SMS/email. Any ideas?
I'm running Ubuntu 10.04.

I recently installed 10.10 64-bit on my laptop. I have an older laptop with 9.10 32-bit on it. I installed vnc4viewer on the 9.10 laptop and started and set up remote desktop connections to let the remote user view and control the local desktop. I then tried Remote Desktop Viewer for the Applications menu on the 10.10 laptop and I can log in and see the remote desktop. When I try to do anything through the vnc viewer I can see my changes affect the serving machine but not the viewing machine. For instance, if I grab a window on the viewing machine and try to move it around the desktop, I can see it move on the serving machine. I guess the connection could just be very slow but it seems real time on the serving machine.

I'm wondering if it's possible to control a TTY on a remote machine via SSH. I'm aware of ssh's -t option, but it doesn't seem to do what I want. Basically, I'm thinking in terms of VNC-like operation, where the remote user and local user see the same thing, only instead of a GUI, they both see TTY1 (or 2, or etc). Is that doable, or no?

28/12/2009 I installed Ubuntu minimal AMD64 and followed the following guide to install it as an HTPC using XBMC. Note that that date was after XBMC's 9.11 official release.[URL]...give and take really minor adaptions, since the guide is not entirely 1 on 1. The process installed XBMC Beta 1 though.
Now, when I do:
- sudo apt-get update / upgrade
The result is:
Code:
The following packages have been kept back:
[Code]...
libsdl1.2debian-alsa: Conflicts: libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio but 1.2.13-4ubuntu4 is to be installed.libsdl1.2debian-pulseaudio: Conflicts: libsdl1.2debian-alsa but 1.2.13-4ubuntu4 is installed. sudo aptitude -> g -> results in a list of 45 files which will be automatically removed. Some of these are libvdpau1, pkg-config, pmount, xinit, xserver-common, xserver-xorg, *-core, *-input-all, *-evdev, *-mouse, *-synaptics etc. A lot of which are needed as aptitude reports by the package xbmc-common, which I suppose XBMC needs to operate.
I do not want to "autoremove". I did that before and that resulted in having a corrupted system and hence the new installation of 28/12. Any idea what is wrong? Why wasn't the official release installed and was Beta1 chosen instead? Why does Aptitude propose to have all these necessary packages deleted? And of course, why am I not able to upgrade to XBMC's latest and final version? How can I?

thought I'd take the plunge and use it as the OS for a new HTPS running XBMC. I installed a second 1TB HDD to use as a media tank that I formatted to NTFS. All is well except I cannot get XBMC to see the second drive. Its mounted and I can access it no worries, but when I go into Videos,> add source, > i'm given the home folder and my network as options, neither of which have the second drive on them. Here's my specs:
AMD Semprom 1.8Ghz

I know it's old lol but probably better than the onboard graphics. The computer is a Compaq Presario sr1403wm. I checked proprietary drivers and there are none available. The graphics run smooth on the desktop and I don't have Compiz enabled. is the graphics card just too old for XBMC? Weird thing is, I also have the same problem in Ubuntu on my good desktop when it's connected to my TV. Just using a normal VGA cable. If I have it connected to my computer monitor using a DVI cable, there's no problem. The only thing I thought of was maybe the resolution was too high, but that made no difference with either computer. If this computer is too old for XBMC, what would be second best in line? MythTV? Doesn't need TV capabilities. Just to watch what's already on the computer. I just really like the XBMC interface and the fact that I can boot right into the interface and of course all the cool plugins and whatnot.

Alright, the lifehacker article about this Acer machine got me interested in revisiting XBMC as a media center. I bought the AR1600-U910H from Newegg and have been struggling for a couple of weeks to get it working correctly. I opted to install a full Ubuntu desktop to utilize the hardware fully with a standalone version of XBMC. I am currently running Lucid with NVIDIA 256.25 (was running 195 series) driver. Switched to 256 because I heard it fixes the no multi-channel output problem. However, sadly I can't get multi-channel out to work. I have the HDMI output going through my Onkyo TX-SR608 receiver for both audio and video. My problem is I can only get stereo sound out while running XBMC (or any application for that matter).
I've upgraded Alsa to 1.0.23. I've installed new Beta 256.25 NVIDIA driver. I've configured Alsa about 28 different times. I'm at my wits end. So, my question is - does anybody having a similar setup with the ION chip (or the Acer Aspire Revo in particular) where they can succesfully get HDMI digital audio pass through to a receiver (or at least digital multi channel out)? The best I've gotten is 2 channel audio, which doesn't do a lot of good on a 5.1 setup. If I would have known getting multichannel audio would be so difficult I would have rethought starting this endeavor. I don't care if I have to do a fresh reinstall of everything - if that means a different version Ubuntu so be it.
