I just converted my physical Suse 11 desktop to a virtural machine on an ESX 4.0 server. The machine boots, but there is no GUI interface, as there is one on the physical machine. How do I start GUI from the command line interface?
View 3 RepliesI recently installed Vortexbox, which includes fedora release 14.Got everything working, but could not access the network. After a bit of searching, found that "ifup eth0" activated the interface.To do this on boot, I have added this command, together with my "mount /dev/..." command in file /etc/rc.localIt works OK, but I cant help thinking there's a proper way of doing this?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI recently installed ubuntu 10.10 on my Acer Aspire laptop 5745G-7671 laptop. It has an Nvidia Geforce gt 420m dedicated card, and an Intel HD integrated GPU. The problem is, I recenly installed a driver for it (because ubuntu had already found a driver in hardware management). After I did that, everytime I try to start ubuntu, I can no longer see any GUI interface.I have tried everything. I tried restarting X (which doesn't seem to work in Ubuntu 10.10, and tried holding CTRL+ALT+F7 too, but it just displays a few "[ OK ]" messages.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have two computers that have a direct ethernet wire between them. The interface is set to a static ip address on each side, and under control of the NetworkManager.
About 1/10 the time the interface does not start. The messages log file will show:

BTW, this problem started recently on Fedora 13 after some upgrades. We upgraded to the latest Fedora 15 to try and solve it, and it now appears more often than it did on Fedora 13.

I have set up nagios on Suse 11.2 and it is working fine on the localhost. I can access localhost/nagios, <ipaddress>/nagios in the browser and it loads up the nagios webinterface. If I try on a computer on the network with <ipaddress>/nagios the request times out. I have tested that I can ping to and from both machines (nagios machine and the machine I am trying to access the interface from).Some detailsNagios is running in a hyper-v VM. I installed it through yast2. Communication is run via a switch and sonicwall firewall but firewall has allow all within the network.I have a feeling it's some apache2 setting that I haven't configured or something blocking port 80.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI just setup a SuSE 11.3/64 server and I am trying to setup pptpd for a vpn. I noticed thatg the ppp0 (or any pppx) interface is non-exoisting and I think that that is the problem why my gre packages are not being sent by pptpd (as I have checked all other options). I have tcp port 1723, and protocol port 47 (gre) open on the firewall (SuSEfirewall2). I have traced the responses using tcpdump and only when the server sends gre to the remote client, the client never receives it (the 1723 connection is established). I checked the old server (SuSE 10.2) that worked the vpn fine, and the only thing missing on 11.3 is ppp0. All other hardware (routers, etc.) are the same. I suspect that pptpd tries to use ppp0 and the interface is non-existing. I can remotely ssh to the server, dns works, samba works, everything else works. Is it something I am missing? How do I create if ppp0 and link it to eth3, the internet gateway?
As always, a windoze tech crashed the old server and I had to setup the new one in a hurry, just before going on vacation, and people want this done by yesterday? They paid $$$$ to the windoze tech (who said Linux is obsolete) even after he almost brought the company down!
I am reporting various network statistics in a c++ program by reading the values out of /proc. However, I am having trouble determining the link status. In particular, I am wondering:
1. How are the standard interface flags (IFF_UP, IFF_RUNNING) as referenced in if.h accessed from user land? The ifconfig man page lists its files as
/proc/net/socket (doesn't exist in suse), /proc/net/dev, and /proc/net/if_inet6. None of these seem to contain these flags.
2. ip link show reports a "NO-CARRIER" flag. How does this correlate with the "UP" and/or "RUNNING" flags as reported by ifconfig, and how is it accessed from user space?
I have matlab installed on a network (I am not the administrator) and we usually start the program by typing "matlab", then choosing one of the version options from the menu i.e. typing "n". So because of this, trying to run matlab programs or commands directly like this... matlab -r ProgramName
...does not work. I just get the menu as usual and everything else is ignored. I assume the admin has overridden the matlab command with their own custom script. So my question is can I start a specific version of the program by specifying the folder that the version is in? I thought it might be something like /opt/matlab/version -r programname
this might look foolish, but I am a bit of a linux noob. Let me know if I should just ask my administrator but I thought there might be something easy I am missing.

When I do...# iptables -L...I see rules in my INPUT and OUTPUT chains that look scary:ACCEPT all -- anywhere anywhere...but these rules only apply to the loopback interface. I tested it and the server cannot be reached on open ports from the outside world. How can I make iptables show the interfaces that the rules apply to?Otherwise, every time I do iptables -L it will scare the crap out of me.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI installed OS11.4 on my old laptop, Compaq Armada E500., 512MB RAM, ATI Rage Mobility. During installation I chose "minimal server" and added some development packages, lxde and a little more. I chose to start in runlevel 3 which is full networking without X. Still, when computer is booted it tries to start Xorg which doesn't work because of some problem w driver. The start-up seems to stop there, it never loads completely - seems most things in runlevel 3 are not started (see below) I can manually login on laptop and fix it - but never permanently, same thing again after reboot.
I have checked /etc/inittab & yast - both states default runlevel is 3. I have checked services to be started both directly, browsing directory /etc/rc.d/rc3.d/, and with YaST, it is very clear X should not load during boot. But, as said, it does.. I don't really care about the driver problem right now, I can fix that later when I have more time. So how do I stop X from getting started automatically?
More info, if needed: The installation also stopped with message on tty1 "Starting YaST2" and tty8 showing errors with graphics driver (mach64). The system seemed to be installed though, so I simply rebooted (issuing "reboot" from tty2).

I'm not completely sure where it stops, network is configured but keyboard is wrong and mysql & everything after is not started, so somewhere between S02network and S06kbd. I'm going to use it as a server for testing purposes so no X is actually needed - however I do want to have X & lxde installed just in case, my Internet connection at home is terribly slow so I need most things I might need in the future installed today.
II'm a front-end web developer, I've always developed on Windows with technologies like XHTML, CSS, Javascript and Flash, I've dabbled with PHP and MySQL. I am well used to Windows workflows and tools, from Photoshop to Notepad++, Filezilla and WAMP server stacks to After Effects, and a swathe more - but always on Windows.I'm at a point where I think I need to start seriously developing on a Linux box, specifically at the moment to create web apps based on Node.js, but compiling tools and programs has become a task I'm more frequently required to do.
My question? I need to get my hands on a user-friendly install of Linux, but which one? I need common interface developer tools (lists welcome) to replace... well as many tools I have on Windows as possible.I need to be readily connected to the internet, I need OS updates to not destroy my workflow by crashing the OS, as I've seen Ubuntu do to various friends. I want efficiency, I need to be able to customise what I need to in order to perform development tasks.I guess this could be a long list, but - I don't have practical working knowledge of the Linux OS, nor how it "compares" to Windows (excuse my faux pas). I'm obviously willing to learn, but I'm far, far more keen to just... continue interface development, just on Linux instead of Windows.

View 1 Replies View RelatedHow do I execute xinit on a remote computer through ssh (preferrably)? ssh -X is NOT an option. I'm not looking for running a remote program on localhost. I want to run a program on the server displaying on the server's display. I can do that if X is running. But if for some reason I need to stop X, I can't restart it from the localhost and the program won't run. If I run xinit as root (through sudo) through ssh I get:
X: user not authorized to run the X server, aborting. giving up.
The user can do this if I run it directly on the server.
I have a home computer that I bought to try Linux. first I want to reformat the HD so it is completely empty, it has xp now, then start from scratch. But I have not been able to format the HD. I have used all the tricks I know.

Ive tried to find information on several sites including vectors & havn't found any thing. I did get a list of commands off of the disk but none of the combinations. is there a way to get say kde to come up when starting the live cd?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have an ARM system that has been pre-loaded with some variant of Linux. I don't know the distribution; I can only see the kernel number in dmesg.
In /etc/network/interfaces, I set eth0 to
auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp
After I save and reboot (or run ifdown eth0 followed by ifup eth0), I can see that the networking system is searching for a DHCP server and actually obtains a lease on a valid IP address, but when I run ifconfig, the interface has not been assigned the address that it pulled down from DHCP. It has been assigned a 192.168.. address.
I noticed in dmesg that a variable "ip" is passed to the kernel at boot with the same address that is overriding my DHCP address. How can I disable this overriding behavior? I noticed a dynamic environment variable in u-boot called ip. I set it dhcp and saved it to nv storage, but the problem persisted. I tried to set the u-boot environment variable ipaddr to dhcp, but was informed that this wasn't a valid value for the variable.How can I get the interface to be configured through DHCP?
