General :: Config Service Startup Options In Ubuntu?

Jan 23, 2011

I'm not used to using Ubuntu or Debian as a server. I'm more accustomed to Red Hat/Fedora ways and even Gentoo (yikes).

Under Red Hat installs, you can often configure most services that start from init using config files in /etc/sysconfig named by the service. Is there and equivalent thing under Ubuntu?

Specically I'm trying to control how the libvirtd and kvm processes are started as far as command line options go. I need to add the --listen option somewhere.

General :: Finding Config Options With Which Apt-Get Install

Jan 27, 2011

I'm having Debian GNU/Linux 5.0 on RMI XLS CPU. I have my libpcap application. If I install libpcap using the 'apt-get install' command, it installs 0.9.8 version, and the libpcap application works fine. If, however, I install libpcap (version 1.1.1.) from sources, the libpcap application does not work (does not capture packets). When installing libpcap from sources, I use ./configure command without any arguments. I believe 'apt-get install' installs the libpcap with certain config options which I'm not using when installing from sources. How to see with which config options 'apt-get install' installs a package?

May 11, 2010

I want to start a service and a script SiteMonitor.sh at startup.

Here is brief working of SiteMonitor.sh(This script monitors the ip addresses of machines which are using http service of the host. This script checks this after every 5 seconds therefore i have run it at background.)

To start with i have modified /etc/rc.local file.

Here is the content of my /etc/rc.local file.

Code:
#!/bin/sh
#
# This script will be executed *after* all the other init scripts.
# You can put your own initialization stuff in here if you don't
# want to do the full Sys V style init stuff.

General :: Enable Startup Options On Bind On Fedora?

Jan 11, 2010

I've just configured a bind server for my home domain on Fedora 12. One thing that's buggering me is that Bind tries to do its lookups first with IPv6, which fails and then falls back to IPv4. This seems to me an unnecessary use of resources, so I'd like to turn this off. This is possible by using the option named -4, but there comes the part where. the Named start/stop script is defined in the /etc/rc.d/init.d dir, but how can I get Fedora to start this script with the named -4 option?

Not sure if this goes here or the hardware section. I've added another sata drive to my system formatted to Ext4, but i have to put in my password for root priveliges (spell?) to access it. I can understand from a security point of view about the password, but there is no way to create new folders or even copy/paste data to it, as the options are not available with the right/click mouse. My external USB drive requires no password, and i can do all the usual functions with it, but not so with the internal sata drive. Is there a way to enable the internal drive for 'normal' operations.

Ubuntu :: Too Many Boot Options/No Gui At Startup?

Jun 30, 2010

I had bought a new wifi card(rtl8185) and spent 2 days trying to make it work. I finally got it working but now I am experiencing some other problems.

First of all I get two many bootup options. Before I used to have 4 generic options(2 different kernels with each of them having their own recovery), memtest and then my win7. Now I am having those plus 4 server options and 4 preemp(no clue what this is) options. I am suspicious that this has to do with some command I ran: sudo apt-get install linux-backports-modules-wireless-* I got some notify at that point about broken packages. I followed the instructions given and made the messages dissapear(I don't remember excactly what I did). Then when I saw that it shows all those bootup options I tryied sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-server and sudo apt-get remove linux-backports-modules-wireless-preemp but that didn't solve anything.

My second problem is that in startup now even if I choose the generic option it doesn't load the gui but just gives me the command prompt so I have to run startx each time. I am kind of a noobie in linux but would like to learn so please give me some guidance. I thought of reinstalling a fresh copy of Ubuntu-desktop but it's just too hard work. So I would be grateful if you could tip me on how fixing the problem as it is. I run Ubuntu 10.04 x64

Fedora Installation :: Make Menuconfig Options For LIRC Not In .config File Anywhere

Aug 25, 2009

When configuring a custom kernel using fedoraproject.org instructions, the make menuconfig options for LIRC are not in the .config file anywhere. I checked the kernel tree and all the files are there in the .../drivers/input/lirc subdirectory (I need the lirc_dev and lirc_i2c drivers). I reset the .config to its original settings to make sure I didn't mess up. I also grep'ed the .config file for any LIRC related settings, none found. Also I'm not getting any sound from the radio-aztech driver.

Server :: Some Options In System-config-samba Dialog Are Not Working Properly?

Apr 13, 2010

I am using Fedora 12. I have the following problem, when i working with system-config-samba dialog:I add the new user on the server:as following:

Unix username: vova
Windows username:test

As described in Customisation Guide for Red Hat 9: "If the user has a different username on a Windows machine and will be logging into the Samba serverfrom the Windows machine, specify that Windows username in the Windows Username field."So i logged from the Windows machine not under test(Windows username) but under vova. And i logged in without the problem. However it seems that samba should check windows username=test (as have written in samba-config) and ask an password for different users. And additionally, if samba check the currect user in Windows itself and verify it with Unix user, what for we need write the Windows username in samba config? I don't understand

Server :: Service Postfix Restart Fail / Domain Name Config

Mar 4, 2010

I am new to Linux and I am trying to set up a mail server using postfix. I have done all the configurations(hopefully correct) and all the test seems to work except 2 things.

1) Postfix is running but when I try to restart the service it always fails. I checked the /var/log folder and there are no error messages.
2) When I try sending e-mails using outlook, outlook fails to connect to my server.

I am wondering if I have done the configurations properly. I am a little confused in regards to hostname and domain name. When I do a hostname on the terminal I see the hostname that I gave my server. When I do the domainname command however, domain is none. Is it necessary to have a domain to configure postfix? I have myhostname = my.hostname.com what should my domainname = to if there is none. If I do require a domain name how to I create one? I need to be able to access e-mail from external clients.

I have recently installed Lubuntu 11.04 on an old system. the problem is that it hangs at startup when tries to "Starting Bluetooth". But I can't remove the card because it is a part of my Graphic Card which is an "ATI Radeon 8500DV All In Wonder". I can start the machine with Lubuntu Live CD, and so I thought that maybe I can change a value in a file from installed Lubuntu through Live session that makes the Bluetooth Service disabled at startup.

Server :: Configure Fakemail To Startup As Xinetd Service?

Feb 2, 2010

I found a way to capture emails sent from my Drupal installation, and Fakemail seems simple enough. I can follow the tutorial. Since the application Fakemail needs to be running to capture the outgoing emails, it seems like a good candidate for xinetd, yes? I've found a simple config tutorial describing starting the service and what the parameters are for the service-specific configuration files. This got me this far,

Code:

# default: on
# description: This is a script to start the Sandbox app "fakemail"
service fakemail

[code]....

But the service is not starting up. Will someone help me with this config file? Or, recommend another application which uses a similar configuration like Sendmail so I can copy this The Fakemail application/service is started from command line like so,

# fakemail.py --host=localhost --port=10025 --path=[path_to_email_textfile]

Fedora :: 15 Service Configuration App - Enable / Disable At Startup Setting Is Greyed Out

Jun 25, 2011

When installing Samba and Webmin I use the application "system-config-services" or (if it is easier to find for you that way) menu->Administration->Service management. In this application I can start the services I need (nmb, smb, webmin), but the enable/disable at startup setting is greyed out... Even when I start the application as root it still gives me no possibility to configure the services to start up on boot. This should be possible. It works this way in Fedora 13 and Fedora 14, so why not in Fedora 15?

Before reporting a bug, I would like to ask if other users here have the same problem (and -if possible- a solution)... In the mean tim I guess it is back to the old way of configurating services - sigh..

[edit] I tried to remove the [SOLVED] from the title, but the forum software does not seems to allow me to do that... I thought it was solved by installing xinetd, but I was happy a bit too early. I still have no answer for this problem.
