Ubuntu Networking :: Change Samba's User Password From Windows 7?
Oct 1, 2010
I have a Samba installed and configured on a Ubuntu Server 10.04 box, as a file server, not as an PDC. And I have several Windows 7 machines accessing the Ubuntu Server to store files.
I would like to let users to change their passwords from windows.
I setup openldap and samba on 9.10. The ubuntu desktop client gets authenticated successfully with the server. But when I do a passwd on the client, only the ldap passwd is getting changed but not in the samba and the unix user account.
My smb.conf
Code:
passdb backend = ldapsam:ldap://192.168.3.100 ldap suffix = dc=example,dc=local ldap user suffix = ou=People ldap group suffix = ou=Groups
[code].....
But only the ldap password is getting changed and not in the samba and unix user account.
I want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
I finished setup Samba PDC with Openldap backend. I can joint Winxp client to domain but can not change pass by press Ctrl + Alt + Delete and choose Change password button
This is my conf. I used samba3x-3.3.8 openldap 2.3.43 slapd.access.conf
Code: access to attrs=userPassword, shadowLastChange, sambaNTPassword, sambaLMPassword by dn="cn=Manager,dc=microhdesk,dc=net" write by anonymous auth by self write by * none
I installed SLES 10.2 with SAMBA 3.5.5.43 to retire our old Microsoft Windows 2000 Server and save some money. All was fine until last week when our chief asked to me to set password expiration for all clients. This morning, all users cannot logon because, when they logon, windows asks to change password and then it gives error error "Access Denied".
I'm using Ubuntu 9.10 and trying to install a printer over the network which is plugged into a Windows 7 machine. I can see the workgroup fine and the computer fine on the network, but when I try to double-click on the computer (both via the nautilus and the printer setup route), it asks me for a username, workgroup and password.
I tried the account's username and password and username "Guest" with no password but neither worked. The weird thing is that when I booted my machine into Windows XP and tried to install the same printer, it never asked me for a username and password and installed just fine. Why is Samba/Ubuntu asking me for the Windows 7 password when Windows XP didn't need it?
I have just started a job as an IT tech, and have inherited a linux server running CEntOS 5.3 -- I have some experiance with linux, but am a little at sea. I'm using Webmin 1.490.The main use of the server is to samba share file space to windows clients, running XP.Everyone can happily connect to their home share, however the other shares have problems. One of the shares "staff" fails intermittently (to some staff members) and some of the other shares fail always.
The failure is that when a user tries to connect to the share, it pops up a username and password dialog (even if they just successfully viewed their home dir) then on entering correct details and clicking ok, the box refreshes with <domain><user name> (where braced values are replaced by literal values). If a user is connecting from outside via vpn (hosted though a different department's server) the domain is replaced by their computer name.If the password is re-entered, the same happens, in an infinite loop, and no access is ever given. When I say the staff share is intermittent, there likely is some pattern, but I haven't been able to work it out yet -- I think it may have something to do with how recently the account was set up, or physical location.
I am currently attempting to setup Samba 3 (installed) for a basic home-network file-sharing server via Ubuntu 10.04. It seems like (based on my extensive googling and research) nobody wants or has a configuration like I do, but surely SOMEBODY knows how to do this.
The following is my goal for a basic setup.
Folder 1 (share is called "Read-Write"):
-Users from Windows 7 can see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 1 as they so desire.
-Users can accomplish all of this from as "guest."
Folder 2 (share is called "Read-Only"):
-I can log in as my user to see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 2 as I so desire.
-People other than me can log in as "guest."
-"Guest" users from Windows 7 can see, read, and execute programs as desired.
Things I have accomplished:
-Directories exist
-Directories are browseable via Windows 7
-My user has a password for Samba (assigned via "sudo smbpasswd -a matthew)
Things I have not yet been able to accomplish:
-Configure Folder 2 so that Samba asks for login credentials when someone tries to access it SO THAT I an use my Samba user to log in.
-Configure Folder 2 so that, when I log in as my Samba user, I can see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 1 as I so desire.
-Configure Folder 2 so that Windows 7 users can easily access it as guest to browse, read, and execute files and folders in it.
-Configure Folder 1 so that any Windows 7 user can easily access it as guest to see, read, write, execute, create, or delete any files and folders in Folder 1 as they so desire.
ubuntu 9.04 and win xppro i've been pounding my head aganst this for hours now. reading anything i can find samba works mostly shares created from nautilus work fine from both ubuntu and windows if i check to allow guest access if not i can not log in it does work in the nautilus browser fine. shouldn't make a difference but am using a virtualbox win xp guest shares work without issue. printers work here is a dump of my service defenitions
[global] workgroup = HOME server string = %h server (Samba, Ubuntu) map to guest = Bad User
I want to add 50 new users, not on the server yet I want to add them all to group Accounting - with 1 option, not user by user I want to setup a default password for them all, and have it say something like 'You must now change password or no access will be permitted' Any other options I also want to do once, not for each user?
I am using mint 8 for a 2 weeks, I am noob to linux but I like Mint than any other linux distro which is great alternative to windows. I have a problem regarding password reseting.
1. My laptop automatically get logged in without asking user name and password.
2. I tried to change password for newly created user and root user using graphical way but it does not work.
2. I can perform administrator task using only OEM user which is default inbuilt user of mint.
How can make my laptop to ask password when mint get booted? How to change password for other users?
At the RHEL prompt, I entered the standard user's username/password combo. Linux displays a message box stating:"Your account has expired; please contact your system administrator."Next, I entered "root" in the username field and entered the root password (which expired also--keep in mind that passwords are set to expire after x days). Linux displays a message box stating:"You are required to change your password immediately (password aged)."When prompted to "Enter current UNIX password", I entered the new password (was that the right thing to do?); Linux displays a message box stating:"The change of the authentication token failed. Please try again later or contact the system administrator."I rebooted the system and got into command line mode; somehow I logged in as "root" (don't know exactly how, but needed to change the password there). At the "#" prompt, I type "passwd root"; Linux displays the message "Changing password for user root", followed by the message "passwd: Authentication information cannot be recovered.
I try to access my ubuntu machine via my Windows Machine (Samba Server on Ubuntu Machine). Anytime I try to access the machine it asks me for my password...I enter it but it says it is invalid....is there anyway to reset it? I have already tried to remove and purge everything Samba related and then tried reinstalling, but that still didn't do anything
I'm running sid, reasonably updated. I decided to add a samba share. I installed samba (2:3.4.8~dfsg-2), samba-tools, smbclient, smbfs, & samba-client. I did a "/etc/init.d/samba start" and even rebooted. But when I try to add a samba password for my regular user I can't.
# smbpasswd -a praxis bash: smbpasswd: command not found I did a "locate smbpasswd" but I'm only seeing:
I have setup a samba Active Directory PDC to essentially eliminate the cost of using a Windows PDC. There are other reasons but I won't go into those now.
So everything works fine apart from a couple of things that are bugs in samba until 4.2 which isn't stable yet on debian (so I read).
The one thing that doesn't work is users trying to change their passwords. I can change them from either the PDC or through Windows users and groups. If a user tries to change it they will get the message:
"Mutual Authentication Failed. The server's password is out of date at the domain controller".
I provisioned the domain using samba-tool domain provision, i have configured kerberos and users can log in fine....it is simply changing passwords that are the issue. I am not sure if this is a samba config issue or where it is. I would hate to have to fall back to a Windows PDC.
Below is my samba config, the [domain] is of course an actual domain on the server.
Samba Config:
# Global parameters [global] workgroup = [domain short] realm =[domain] netbios name = BILBO server role = active directory domain controller
I want to create a webpage where users can change their samba password and before I jump to PHP code i want to write perl code that can be called in php code.I have created two file 1. main.pl - this script actually switch user and call passwd.pl2. passwd.pl - this is actually changes the password {main.pl}
#!/usr/bin/perl my $username = $ARGV[0]; my $oldpass = $ARGV[1];
After today's sudo upgrade on Karmic amd64, I am able to login only as root on my xubuntu system. Tried to change password on my user account but the result is the same.
i have an admin-account and an user-account on a computer. It's automatically log in to the user-account, but I have forgott the passwordt. I want to change it, but to how change it? I need the precent. How do i do? I have the admin password.
I want to do setting in RHEL5 such that user should able to change his password only once in a day.I have changed the fourth field (i.e. minimum number of days to change) in in "/etc/shadow" file for "root" to "1". But its not working. I am able to change the password of "root" using "passwd" command.Any one can help me out on this issue
One of my users has a bit of a problem. I forced password change for this user, and the user thought that it was simply asking for the password again. I had to use my godlike powers to change the users password again. And here comes trouble. The user cannot log in. The system accept the password and we can see the background screen and some messages, but that is all.Quote:Could not update ICEauthoroty file /home/user/.ICEauthorotyQuote: There are problems with configurationsserver.(/usr/lib/libgconf2-4/gconf-sanity-check-2 exit with status 256)Quote:Nautilus couldn't create following folders necessary: /home/user/Desktop, /home/user/.nautilus.Please create these folders before you run Nautilus, or set permission so Nautilus can create them
I am running Fedora 12 as Guest OS in VMware Player. I installed Fedora 12 by using a Prepackage VM . The root user name and p/w was supplied by the person who made this appliance. Is there way for me to change root user name and pw
I want to know how to change a password to an user account. Can someone give me the syntax on how to do this? I was using usermod but it's not working (usermod -p 123456 user1). Is there other way beside usermod? I am using RHEL5.
