General :: Proxy Connect To Secure Computer W Key?
Nov 25, 2010
I've been searching for the exact set of tools to accomplish what I need. I was once at a LANparty. I used my webmail account and I think someone stole my password. I realized that the LAN used hubs instead of switches.
So next time, I thought I could run a server at home, which would allow me to connect with SSL (??). Then I would be able to connect to whatever website knowing that I was secure between myself and my home computer. I guess I would need to have a key before a secure connection could be made. Otherwise a "man in the middle" kind of exchange could take place.
So I guess I would need a VPN between myself and my home computer. Then my home computer would act as a proxy to allow me to surf securely. I'm not sure if these are the correct terms to use. Does anyone know what type of server I'm looking for?

I need to be able to log into (with X enabled) my home computer (running OpenSuse 11.4) from my work computer(running Windows XP). I was originally going to setup ssh on my home computer but then realized that I wouldn't be able to get my desktop this way.At work, we use windows remote desktop connection to log into other computers within our network, but I'm planning on asking my manager if I'm allowed to login to my home computer. If he accepts, I need a method to actually make it happen.I looked at FreeNX which seemed awesome but it doesn't seem to have windows support. To an extent that I would like to only allow my work IP to be allowed to even try an login. The bridge to cross here is the fact that I'm connecting from windows.

I'm using Ubuntu 10.04, and starting a SOCKS proxy with 'ssh -D', and setting Ubuntu to use it with "System -> Preferences -> Network Proxy". Firefox uses the proxy, and the proxy's IP appears when I visit a site like [URL]. is Firefox resolving DNS requests through this proxy? Is my web-browsing truly secure? (That is, until I exit the other end of the proxy.
I know it's insecure after that.) (And I've verified the keys, I'm not being man-in-the-middled) (And--screw it. You know what I mean. Is it resolving DNS requests through the proxy?)I don't know how I would go about verifying such a thing for myself.Using additional hardware such as another debugging proxy is not an option. If Firefox isn't resolving my DNS requests through the SOCKS proxy, how do I go about fixing it?

there are different methods for securing based on home versus professional computers. My questions generally pertains to securing home desktops, but professional protection is definitely welcome :) Knowledge is power. Ever since moving to the wonderful world of Linux a couple years ago, I never even really thought about security. Seeing as most low-life scum make viruses for Windows machines seeing as they're more abundant. But how do I know if I'm safe/secure from anyone who want's to get at me or my stuff. I know that anyone who is determined enough to get in will, there's no question about that. But what steps can I take to ensure I'm protected from things like rogue root shells and automatic attacks? Also, is there a sort of built-in firewall/antivirus in more Linux distros?
I know this question is quite broad seeing as there are tons of ways someone could compromise your system, but maybe you could share what you did to make sure you were safe.I decided to not allow root login via ssh and to change the port is listens on to something random. Hopefully this a step in the right direction. Currently looking at iptables and shutting down services.

I need to setup a squid 3 proxy with https bumping. Unfortunately I'm not very familiar with squid and https in general.
I already perfomed the following steps:
1.) compile from source
Code: Select all./configure --with-openssl --enable-ssl-crtd
make
make install
2.) configuration (http)
I used this guide: [URL]
3.) configuration (https)
[URL]
The server is now working for http and https, but is the server secure, too? Is the default config already secure or do I need to configure additional security features? (e.g. things like cert validation, cert pinning, [dont know what's importend], ...)

I have setup a Squid Transparent Proxy that works and I can connect to most websites and block-list works and yadda yadda yadda.
My problem is that when I try to connect to a certain PC it will not work. A bit more clarity...
[INTERNET]----[DSL-MODEM]----[ROUTER]----[SQUIDSERVER]----[NETWORK]
Connected to the DSL-MODEM is the PC in question that I can't connect to when using Squid. If I bypass the Squid from the Network and go through the router I can connect to the PC.
I want to be able to use the Squid server and still access the PC connected to the Modem and I want to have a Squid SAR report of the Network PC's accessing the PC on the modem.
The Modem/Router/Squid/Network all use the same IP range, but the PC on the modem has a different IP.

how to connect the database to proxy server.example:: this is the acl in squid.conf to block the website.the keyword that want to block store in file .txt
acl block_advertisers urlpath_regex -i /etc/squid/
block_advertisers.txt
acl block_entertainment urlpath_regex -i /etc/squid/
[code]...
a bit info, the data that stored in database is a keyword to block the website if a keyword in blacklist match with the url that want access by user. if match so then the user cannot access the website.

I want to connect to an FTP server from the Linux command line. The server is configured behind a proxy.
If I call:
echo $ftp_proxy
I get a result like this:
abc.def.ghi.jkl:8080
If I call:
ftp -pn $ftp_proxy
I get a unknown host error.
How can I connect to the FTP server using the Linux command line?

I can connect to unsecure routers, but not to any secure routers. NetworkManager doesn't seem to work and neither does anything else I try. I have tried with WPA supplicant but to be honest I have not a clue what to do. I have an Atheros ar5009 card and I'm currently using the ath9k module. Lan works just fine. But my wireless doesn't.

I used to be able to connect to my uni secure access vpn by navigating to the appropriate page, logging in and clicking "start" by "Network Connect" etc. etc.
After an update to firefox it had been failing, giving me a "session timeout" MsgBox. I have tried clearing history etc and reinstalling firefox. I have also tried different browsers with no success.
So, I have since upgraded to 9.10 and now I get "Setup Failed, Sorry" in the bottom left of the screen (where "Done" is displayed once a page has loaded)...
I am now trying a different approach. I have downloaded ncui-6.5R2.i386.rpm and unpacked it fine. I have tried running it, without success and have also run the diagnostic - I will post results below:
When I try and run ./ncsvc I get the following:
Code:
ncsvc> Failed to setuid to root. Error 1: Operation not permitted
So I did a sudo ./ncsvc , which gives:
Code:
mkdir(/root/.juniper_networks) failed: Permission denied
I am pretty sure that my password above is correct - I re-tried it and got the same message... I can definitely do, e.g., sudo apt-get update fine.
I then ran all of the tests available in ncdiag (./ncdiag -A) which gave the following info which might be useful
Code:
NC Diagnostics for Linux.
Version 1.0.

When one should try to connect to port 3306 of particular ip here e.g. 345.56.67.87 it should be redirected to port 3306 of internal machine. This is the scene : How can I access the particular port of the machine which is behind the router . i.e. From out side internet I would like to connect to the port 21 of the machine (192.168.5.8) which is behind router (345.56.67.87) . Here are the details I tried : both side linux (centos)
1.enabled ip forwarding of router (345.56.67.87)
2.enabled ip forwarding of machine (192.168.5.8)
3.implemented some iptable rules: /sbin/iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT --dst 345.56.67.87-p tcp --dport 3306 -j DNAT --to-destination 192.168.5.8:3306
4.iptables -t nat -A OUTPUT --dst 345.56.67.87 -p tcp --dport 3306 -j DNAT--to-destination 192.168.5.8:3306
I tried to google on it mainly it dealt with the iptable rules. of which i applied but error is" can not connect to the port 3306 of 192.168.5.8"

I have a Dell Inspiron 8600 laptop on which I recently installed Ubuntu 9.10. Most things work, but the wireless will not connect to my home wireless network (a Linksys WRT54G). (Cannot see any other WIFI antennas from here, so I don't know if it works on other networks). Ubuntu says I have an Intel PRO/Wireless 2200BG, Kernel Driver ipw2200.
When I try to look for a wireless network, Ubuntu doesn't see any. (Every other computer in the house does, Macs and PCs). I tried Connect to Hidden Wireless Network > New > and filled in the name and the WEP password that the Linksys gave me.When I select Connect to Hidden Wireless Network and select the network that I entered all the information for, the Connect button is always grayed out.

I recently ubgraded to ubuntu 9.10 from 9.04, but I had the same problem there. I can see the secure connections, but when I try to connect to them, it tries to connect, works at it for about a minute, and then asks for the password again. This just started a week ago or so. I am new with ubuntu, so while I know that there are terminal outputs I should probably post, I don't know which ones.

I have been using Ubuntu for quite a long time and I never got around fixing this particular wireless problem. I have tried Network Manager as well as Wicd. I am never able to connect to a secure network (WPA). When I use Network Manager, it just tries for a long time and gives up. As for WiCD, it again tries for a long time and finally says "Bad Password". Of course, the passkey is correct. When I connect to an unsecured network, it goes through just fine. I have a Dell Inspiron 1545 which uses a Broadcom 43xx Driver.

I currently run Win 7 and want to upgrade my computer to a server to accomplish the following... I have a VPN Service. I want the server machine to connect to a VPN providing a secure connection. Then, I want all the machines in the house (windows based) to connect through the server onto the VPN connection. Hopefully this makes sense. Would it be better to stick to Windows Server 2008 or switch to Ubuntu?

My workplace recently switched to Active Directory for our netdisk space (I work at a University in the US). The "only way" (recommended) by our IT department is to use a cifs protocol. I've had absolutely no luck with that at all. However, it turns out that there is secure WebDAV protocol setup which works well on campus. If I'm off campus I have to connect via a VPN connection; our school uses Cisco Anyconnect 2.3.0254. It works well for me to connect to a printer, etc on campus.
Here's my problem: I can't connect to my netdisk space from off-campus using the Secure WebDAV bookmark that was working oncampus, even when I am connected via the VPN connection. I am using UFW. Is there a port I need to open up, or am I missing something else?

I've been doing some security testing in a lab environment that does not have direct internet access. It's actually a little complicated: From home to connect to my lab machine, I
1. SSH to machineA.
2. SSH from machineA to machineB
where machineB is my actual lab machine. neither machineA or machineB allow anything other than SSH, and machineB is only accessible from machineA. However, I really need to run yum on machineB. I have managed to get internet access via Firefox on machineB by creating a series of SOCKS proxy via SSH.
1. machineB: ssh -L 12345:localhost:12345 user@machineA
2. machineA: ssh -D 12345 user@machineC
3. machineB: configure firefox to use socks proxy, localhost, 12345
where machineC has internet without limits placed. This is the only way I have managed to get internet working. I tried using ssh -L all the way from machineB->machineA->machineC but it didn't work (even when setting Firefox to use http proxy). I tried using ssh -D all the way, but again that doesn't work either.
I do have access via Firefox using socks proxy. However, yum update fails to retrieve mirror list, and from what I have found I don't believe yum supports socks proxy directly. Instead, it uses http_proxy / ftp_proxy. how to get yum to go out over the SOCKS proxy I created (same one using in Firefox)? It seems like since Firefox can access the internet and everything without issues, i should be able to get yum to tunnel through the same connection to access everything.... I tried

is there a way to force wget to use a specific squid proxy when making connections ? - I use a squid proxy normally, but I need this specific request to go via a different one. I dont have to use wget, I just need a way to test squid's blocking rules by requesting various pages through it, this proxy is not my normally proxy on the network and so I cant rely on wget taking the environment variable.
Also, this is as part of a script, so anything that avoids editing wget config files would be best. - Perhaps curl can do this ? - currently im using the exit code of wget to determine if the connection was made.

I have configured a squid proxy server with @2 eth in different network subnet and with site blocking and extn file download blocking. One eth0 for office wired network and another eth1 is for office wireless network for laptop use for guest and visitors.
The problem is [URL] is an Indian government website, which is not working though this proxy server and the Internet Explorer is getting very slow and freezing the computer. In alternate I have configured a another test server with squid proxy with out any security and test the same. the problem is still with the all the computer in the network. The above website is perfectly working with Gateway configuration in TCP/IP properties in Network Configuration in MS Windows XP computers but through squid proxy its not working.

I'm an Oracle DBA and started working for my current employer about 4 months ago. This past weekend an alert re: FS space brought my attention to /var/spool/clientmqueue (full of mail re: cron jobs) and the fact that sendmail is not running on our Linux servers.I'm told that the IT security team deemed sendmail too vulnerable so we don't run it.Aside from FS filling up and missing notification of issues with crontab entries, I'm concerned that we may be missing notification of potential issues. In other Unix/Linux environments I've seen emails from the print daemon when it experienced problems with specific jobs.
Are there other Linux facilities aside from cron and lpd that use email to advise the users of possible issues? Are there ways to secure sendmail or secure alternatives to sendmail? My primary need/desire is to make sure that emails regarding issues on the server get to the appropriate users. Secondary goal would be to have the ability to use mailx to send mail out. There is No need/desire to receive mail from outside.
