Does anyone know how to go about setting up a secure IMAP email server that is able to be accessed from outside the network? Similar to how you can access your google email account from your computer using Thunderbird.

I'm running Ubuntu Server 9.10 and I'm looking to setup an FTP server. I have SSH running beautifully and it's accessible from any computer whether it be inside the network or coming in from the internet (provided you have the administrator username and password ). I've tried Proftpd and vsftpd and have failed miserably so far. Which FTP server application do you think I should go with and how could I go about setting it up through my SSH connection?
My current setup is this:
- Ubuntu Server 9.10 with Fixed IP of 192.168.1.100
- 500GB Hard Drive
- SDA1 = 512MB ext2 /boot
- SDA2 = 2GB swap
- SDA3 = 20GB ext4 /
- SDA5 = 438GB ext4 /home
- One User (Username = administrator)
- Full SSH Capabilities
- IP Address to DNS provided by www.dyndns.org
- WRT120N Router with Remote Access and Port 22 Open
I basically want to set up a secure FTP server that anyone on the internal network can access as well as anyone from the internet (as long as they have a username and password). I want to setup a username and password for each user so that they all have read/write access to the same folder in my /home partition (I'll call it FTPSHARE).
I recently bought my own domain name and have started working on my website. I am way excited about setting this site up. My question is, what would be the best way to setup an email system where users are able to login and check their email...I guess like, a web-based system? Then they can configure a client if they wish with their email address.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI will be getting an old and decrepit laptop (the PS2 channel went out). I have decided that I would like to set it up to be an email and minor data server. The only problem exists that I have never setup a server, yet alone a linux server before.
I want the server to allow user authenticated access to a certain folder on the machine where other clients can go and copy and paste files for the data server portions and I want it to download emails from multiple domains (Gmail, a Microsoft Exchange Server, and from a private domain) and then allow other clients to log in and download those messages (I would like to keep each domain's emails separate so the client has to specify which domain's emails to download).
I want to retrieve emails from my POP3 servers to my home server. But from there, I want to be able to access them via IMAP from my other computers, i.e. desktop, laptop, phone. And then of course I want to be able to send emails from said devices via IMAP to my home server which POP3's them out to my mail servers. Basically, I have a few POP3 accounts with various hosts and I want to conveniently interact with them from lots of devices using my preferred software (i.e. Mutt, or Thunderbird on my Windows boxes). My home server is Ubuntu Server if that's relevant.

Having my Diploma Final Project on setting up a virtual mail server within Local Area Network (LAN) only. I had follow this how-to [URL] and complete up to squirrealmail web mail. I added two new user to try on sending and receiving mail. It works. I run CentOS on VMplayer. I using my laptop to do all the stuff, the laptop default OS is windows 7, I install VM player on it and run CentOS inside the VM Player.
I want to do testing on Windows 7 side by installing Thunderbird email client program, I want to connect to mail server with SMTP, IMAP/POP3 using the email service. I have problem while setting up user account on Thunderbird, Thunderbird seems like cannot detect my CentOS mail server. How? Do I have to do any other configuration on CentOS? Any DNS? Port number for IMAP, POP3 or SMTP?
Anyone know a simple command line to check for a specific email - by subject - on an SSL secured IMAP server?

It's currently running a DNS server (bind9) and an HTTP caching server (squid).What I would like to do is redirect all outgoing port 80 connections to the squid server and also make the server responsible for managing DHCP on the network.
Do I just need to install a DHCP daemon on the server, disable it on the router, then set my server as the default gateway and configure iptables to route all connections like I want? Or is it more complicated than that? Also, would that mean that all communication between two computers on the network will go through the server?
I have a xubuntu mysql server, and my winxp machine is unable to connect to the sql server using mysql ODBC.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a method to sync my calendars on my IMAP server with both my Thunderbird/Lightning any my Blackberry. I found "IMAP Calendar Proxy" here recently, but it has been inactive for 5 years. I've seen people suggesting the use of services like Plaxo and such, but I don't like the idea of a third party messing with my calendars and contacts. Also, I've had to remove several viruses from computers with Plaxo, and I'm not sure if it in itself is a virus or not..... It certainly is a thorn in my side as is. This is for my personal IMAP server, so I'd prefer a free solution even if it is more difficult to install than a paid version. I mainly need it to just sync my calendar to my Blackberry and Thunderbird and couldn't care less about the contacts.
I've been Googling for things for quite some time now, and haven't really found anything that says that it will work with Blackberry and Thunderbird. They really only give a sense of maybe with nothing really defined. I can put on an Ubuntu server to sync everything? I don't want to leave my computer on all the time, and RIM has yet to come out with something decent to sync Blackberries and Thunderbird properly as far as I know.
I have a good grasp on windows server 2003 but I don?t want to pay outrageous license fees for software and services and clients. I am newish to terminal as I only know a few commands. I have no problem installing services for the server edition for 10.04. Its just understanding whats going wrong to troubleshoot. I guess there is you guys and I have good working knowledge of Cisco's IOS's so I understand things like routing tables and interfaces and such for troubleshooting.
Questions I have... Can I install the desktop version of 10.04 and just install the server services? I was looking at the server guide [URL] and would like to know if these can all be installed on the desktop edition without too much trouble. I would imagine one could just use the server edition but I would really want a graphical user environment for some of the activities, if not all that I can. This would be becuase on my skills in the CLI. I priced out a server from Dell. I fits my budget perfectly if I go the Ubuntu 10.04 route. I was wondering if anyone sees any conflicts with the hardware for the Ubuntu OS....

In my Windows environment, I use email client such as Microsoft Outlook to connect to our email server to send email with the following configuration:
Incoming server (POP3): 995 - (requires with SSL)
Outgoing server (SMTP): 465 - (use encrypted connection SSL)

And the mail server requires user ID login and password.how do I setup a text command based email client in my Linux (Centos 5.1) to send out email through the existing email server above, which is in another machine? The email client has to be text command based because I need to use command line to send notification email from anothar application installed in my Linux (Centos 5.1) Since the email client will only be used to send email notification, I don't require setting up of an email server in my linux.

I'm hoping its the right place to ask the question: I have Fedora 8 server acting as a web server. It is a VM hosted at Amazon. I'm trying to use their SES service and using their ses-send-email.pl file to send a mail.I'm getting the following error: "Can't locate Digest/SHA.pm in @INC" I tried installing the Digest-SHA module but I'm not sure how to do it. All manuals and how-to's I found looks like they are intend for development servers not production (meaning I found myself installing alot of packages not sure they are all necessary). What should I install (and how) in order to make it work?

The new email server will replace the primary one.I would like to setup the new email server in parallel with the existing one.This way i can observe issues that might occur and be aware of what could go wrong. I want to received mail to be delivered to both mail servers at the same time.I would like to use postfix, exim i find a bit to difficult to understand.I have thought of using transport maps, the only problem is that you can only forward mail to one server at a time using transport maps.I think recipient_bcc_maps and sender_bcc_maps could work, i would just like ideas of how i can do this.
View 5 Replies View RelatedThe server I'm running is virtually stock CentOS - it's running on a xen virtual host, started as CentOS 5.1 (32 bit) when that was fresh, it's at 5.5 now and updated nightly. All packages except postgresql and php are from CentOS and EPEL.
I'm running dovecot on it, and for long time, squirrelmail connecting via localhost was good enough. All external ports were firewalled by the CentOS firewall (just 25,80,443,custom ssh are currently open).
Now I need to allow an external imap client to connect.
I have generated ssl key and configured the dovecot configuration and it should be good to go, but gosh dangit, I can't remember how to open the port in the configuration.
I did it before when I set up ssh to run on a non standard port after I got sick of constant brute force attack on port 22, but I can't recall what I did and the various tutorials I find online all tell how to do it with the GUI tool, but I don't have any GUI stuff installed.

Is I'm pretty sure what I used to open up my custom > 1024 ssh port, but I can't remember how I used it to open that port and it doesn't seem intuitive. Also, do I need to use 993? I'd almost rather use something custom above 1024, as long as thunderbird supports it (don't care about any other mail client)
Finally, my smtp server is postfix and port 25 is already open (but not an open relay, I check it about every 3 months). For requests to send mail from a client, I would really like some authentication of some type - as in only relays for IP addresses that have recently successfully logged in the secure imap port.

I've recently migrated my office PCs to ubuntu. My server doesn't server any big purpose but to provide Internet Connection to the rest of the nodes. Things were quite easier during the windows era using ICS.
Even in Ubuntu we were able to do it using the "shared network" option, simple & straight forward. But things got complicated only after installing "squid". Needless to say it brought in a lot of add ons as far as the http proxy serving is concerned & we are enjoying a better internet(http only) connectivity without any doubt. But we are not able to use our email clients, MS Outlook or Thunderbird
But to best of my knowledge squid strictly is a http proxy hence doesn't support handling requests on ports other than 80. (465 & 995 in my case)
Now I have two queries, 1. Can "Squid" really be used to do what I want here??? using iptables, port forwarding or any other mean
& 2. Can any one suggest a good pop3/imap proxy as good as squid is.
i want to set up an email server both to receive and send emails. I also am on a dynamic ip scheme with my ISP. I do have a dynamic dns account with no-ip.org the Questions are:
-will somebody be able to send emails to me at the <user>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org email address?
-will I be able to send emails from the <user>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org email address?
I know i'll be able to login to accounts like gmail and yahoo and download emails from there.. but even that i don't know - even macroscopically how its done:
-is it the sendmail deamon that accepts the mail from <me>@gmail.com, <me>@yahoo.com, <me>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org?
-is it the sendmail deamon that does the sending of email (as well)?
-can it push emails that I want to send as <me>@gmail.com to the gmail smtp servers (and they in turn will push my email even further)?
-can it push emails from <me>@<dyndns_name>.no-ip.org to receipients?
and finally,
-WILL receiving pop/imap servers allow incoming email from my server? or due to the dynamic ip they'll assume I'm a spam server?
I have a 9.04 server with postfix imap server. Clients (evolution 2) save sent items in local computer folder. How can I tell postfix to save sent mails in a sent items folder in users mailbox?

View 4 Replies View RelatedI've had Dovecot up and running for months now without any problems whatsoever. Came in this morning and suddenly I can't connect to it. Thunderbird hangs with "Checking mail server capabilities..." and Windows Mail spits out the following error:

Thing is, I'm not using TLS/SSL and have changed exactly nothing since the server was set up. I've tried having the mail clients use SSL/TLS in response to the above error, but that changed nothing.
I'm trying to setup a couple POP accounts in CentOS. I started doing a tutorial that had me install dovecot, and now I have dovecot running but I can't connect at all.Does anyone know of a simple way to get email up and running? It seems like it should be easier than the 14 step tutorials I was finding on Google.Also, should I leave dovecot or try and remove it?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI would like to be able to have email sent directly to my computer at home (i.e. run some kind of mail server on it) instead of having to rely on Gmail, Yahoo or someone else. From what I've read it should be possible, but most of the guides out there seem to be oriented to enterprise-class setups, or at the very least a small business, and I think that a lot of that would be overkill for just getting my personal mail. The minimum *I think* is
- register a domain name, with the DNS pointing to my public IP (which is dynamic, so one question I have is whether I would have to use DynDNS or is DNS at any registrar going to be flexible enough to modify if/when my IP changes?)- something about MX records (I'm really unsure here, what exactly are these and where do I set them up? I don't think a free DynDNS account lets one handle this, does someone know which of their account types supports setting this up?)
- Install sendmail and postfix (which seems like a PITA, but much documentation appears to be available)
- Profit?

Also this whole "whois" thing scares me, if I am correct my information I enter when buying the domain is enter into some big pool of information.
