I used partimage to restore the MBR from a file. It completely wrecked my partitions. I now have 3, a 100mb, a large one and a 9mb. Windows XP complained and Windows 7 got an error trying to format on the middle drive. I then tried to install on the middle drive and it didnt allow me.

I have been trying to DL the version of DOS-box I prefer to C:, but I made both the Win-lose partitions RO when I first installed / (call me crazy, but I was paranoid it might mess with an already broken install from nearly a decade ago with an OS that-shall-remain-nameless that's even older). Incidentally, I have learned from shenanigans with Linux-drivers from nVidia that /home partition is definitely a good idea (another post for another time)...
Anyway: even though I specifically made sure I turned the RO flag off but definitely made both Win' part's "usable" in the Installer from the NETINST live-CD. I had to format because GParted ("Partition Editor" under System -> Administration) wouldn't allow me to edit RW/RO thingy... Even when I logged in as / I checked in fstab, but there's no RO flags listed.
. I may be using the word "flag" when I mean something else. When you run the Lenny graphical installer, and choose to manually partition-edit, and then choose to "use" your [I chose] FAT-32 partitions, there's a few setup choices that become available. Including "its mount-point shall be..." and these Extra Choices I'm referring to as flags, that are "RO", "Quiet?" and a third one I can't remember... Time for sleeping!

it will have a 1TB HDD with Ubuntu 10.10 Maverick Meerkat. I want to reformat the drive and do some kind of advanced partitioning. I want to have 2 installs of Ubuntu11.04, that way I can have Unity AND Gnome 3. Is there a way I can partition it so they share the home and swap partitions? (2. / partitions, 1 /home and 1 swap) How would I do that?
I will also need 2 partitions for Windows 7 which I use for work. (No, I do not want to use VirtualBox) My Windows 7 cd creates a second system reserve partition. I don't know if this will make me run out of partitions. I hear you can only have a max of 4. My idea above has 4 partitions for Ubuntu alone.

I want to start totally from scratch on Linux server I installed the other day. No dual boot, no personal files, etc... on it.
Fdisk -l shows the following:

All the info I have found has multiple steps, but in my situation is there just 1 easy command to do this? If not, can I just reinstall from CD and it will reformat and let me customize more? If I have to use the several steps to reformat, can you explicitly type out exact commands for me? I am completely new, have to learn all this, and all the referece books/materials kind of scatter the info around.
I would like to reinstall debian on my server. It runs a self-compiled 4.0 because of the SATA controller that was not recognized at that time and the only solution was to recompile with the driver. Now, I did a test with an empty drive with V5.04 and the controller is recognized out of the box. I tried to install again, text-based and graphical, but in both modes I have to repartition. Is there a way to reinstall without losing data/reformat/repartition, and if yes, can you point me in the right direction because google or searching the forum did not deliver any solution.
View 14 Replies View RelatedI just did install the updates as they showed up with the Update manager, and now the themes are "broken." On startup, all windows are themed with the Redmond theme. When I open the Appearance dialog, some windows' theme come back. But nautilus still uses the Redmond theme (I'm not running it as root either). The icon theme is totally not taking effect. It's using the ugly gray icons regardless of what I have chosen. This all happened right after the latest update on Karmic, and after I've reinstalled my NVidia driver which breaks after every kernel update. I think it was a kernel update because the number of lines at the grub menu seemed to have increased.
View 2 Replies View RelatedSo far I've been dual-booting Vista and Intrepid, and I decided I'd shrink down the Linux partition a bit, expand the Windows partition and reinstall Ubuntu fresh from a Live CD. I booted up from a Live CD, mounted the old Linux filesystem to check that I hadn't missed any documents to back up before I wiped the partition, and then cued up the relevant operations in GParted.
The key mistake I made was not to unmount the old Linux partition first, which led GParted to bug out and, apparently, stop my Windows partition from working. GParted no longer recognises the partition as NTFS - it tells me it's an unknown filesystem, and refuses to move or resize it.
sudo fdisk -l recognises the partition as HPFS/NTFS. Running chkdsk from a Vista recovery disk has been, so far, unsuccessful. What else can I do to either make the partition bootable again, or at least access it from Linux so I can pull my files off?
Whilst in fedora i deleted files off my second hard drive to free up some space, i deleted over 10gb worth of data. When booting back in to my windows partition it doesnt recognize the free space instead it thinks the hard drive is still full even though i deleted the data.Not to sure as to why this has happened, as im sure i have deleted stuff of this hard drive before from my linux partition.Any help would be greatly appreciated as my 70gb hard drive is full with only 20gb of data to show for it

I currently have the partitions laid out using a mixture of RAID (mdadm) and LVM2, as specified in this document [1].
Ideally I'd like to just wipe out the non /home partition, as it's got data I'd like to keep.
Is it possible to reuse the current setup, or do I need to restart? vgdisplay, vgchange -a y, etc don't yield any results from the Ubuntu LiveCD, and I'm wary to run any commands that might wipe my data.

I recently aquired server with TWO hard drives.For reason unknown (hehe) i installed unbuntu server on both hard drives.This is causeing me some problems, and i would like to wipe everything and start over, would like to put unbuntu server on one hard drive and use the other for free space.P.S I have had Unbuntu server run succsessfully i am just unclear on how to clear a hard drive of any OS.Oh did i mention the first time i used linux was 3 days ago? My wireless and wired Ethernet seem to be working great; however, System Settings >> Network Settings >> Network Settings does not display any information except for the "Domain Name System" tab. In fact pretty much everything is grayed out. Kinda odd, right? As root "$ ifconfig -a" lists both eth0 and eth1 along with pertinent info like IP-addy, MAC, etc. So the cards are definitely detected by the base system. Oh yea, and wpa_cli lists eth1 (my Intel 2200bg wireless card) as an available adapter. However, wireshark does not list anything either. I cannot begin super-happy-fun-time analysis with wireshark unless i can select a given adapter. here is the relevant entry of my rc.inet1.conf

I thought maybe i needed to declare an IFNAME for the adapter and that would be what Network Settings or Wireshark detected but doing so just killed my network so i commented them out.
I deleted the root line in passwd and shadow and then tried to copy the backup and was able to put it all back to normal from rescue mode. However when i get to my login screen i can not login as root anymore or even after logged in as another user i can not su - or su root, it tells me that root user does not exist......

I just upgraded to 10.10 version (32 bit) and istalled gmameui along with mame. Although when i try to run gmameui preferences the program crashes, it recognizes the roms and am able to play so it doesnt really bother me. The problem is that joystick works but not properly despite jscal calibration .My joystick is recognized as js0. I reinstalled "joystick" package but the problem persists

I have been using UBUNTU 9.10 on a toshiba satellite notebook for about 8 months. My first challenge was getting online and staying that way with mobility. I purchased a Cisco Systems Linksys WUSB600N version 2 from the store and brought it home to install on my machine. My first install was successful, to some degree. I followed the instructions that I found here on our forums and was soon on my way.
After a while, though, I started being disappointed with my device's performance. It would frequently drop my connection, and was always reliably slow- even under a good signal. I assume that it can work better, so I proceeded to go back online, and search for a new driver. Herein lies my problem. Instead of searching for ways of optimizing the device performance I opted to install a new driver (which turns out to be the same driver).
I have read threads on installing the driver: [URL] which were very helpful the first time, but in my current position leave me hanging. I have read many pages on many sites trying to avoid posting un-necessarily, but to no avail. I think my problems stem from n00b status, and so I will divulge my symptoms:
1) I did not uninstall the first driver -- don't know if it's a problem, but i'm listing it --
2) I can't fully decipher the README file particularly this part:" 3>In os/linux/config.mk define the GCC and LD of the target machine define the compiler flags CFLAGS modify to meet your need"

3) the error I receive when running make in the driver's directory is as follows:

I feel like I'm missing something essential in either the 'Makefile' or the 'config.mk' files, but now turn to the help of the community.
When i use the shutdown-command in the terminal as root, it nearly works. It starts to shut down, and it looks like all programs and the kernels shuts down. I end up with a black screen, sometimes with the ubuntu-logo on, but it never powers off. I have to force it off by holding the power button. When i use the graphical interface to shut it down, it works perfectly. The poweroff-command works without problem too.

I am using a ubuntu 10.10 desktop,i cannot login to my system it doesnt accept the password. when i login in safe mode i get through but when i run any command i get segmentation fault.
