Why does centos-release-notes have any dependancies ?
I can see no reason why centos-relese-notes should depend on centos-release when I try "yum erase centos-release-notes" I am told there are 72 dependancies including completely irrelevant packages such as tar all because of this unnecessary dependancy.
The centos-release-notes package simply contains a bunch of text/html files that nothing else relies upon, so why the dependancies ?

I've had two centos smtp relays setup since 5.1, and it seems every day there are updates, and about every 3 months new minor releases. Is there a way to "lock" to a minor release version of centos? I use yum update to run updates, is that the correct process?

We have a linux server (centos 5.2 final), with postfix smtp server, webmin, usermin and sugar crm
We need to backup all the data, and then perform a restore on a clean machine, without any OS installed yet.
I look into many pages that says that doing a backup on linux it's as easy as pack all the files in a .TAR file. Unpacking the tar will restore the system to it's original state. Also, i'm confused because if we perform a backup and mysql has active connections, perhaps the database would be inconsistent or corrupted. In the restore step, do i need a live CD in order to boot up linux command prompt? Can it be from any linux version, or only centos version?

Question, what is generally considered the best usb wireless nic to purchase for this distro/release? Also, any opinions on the best wireless aircard and carrier to use, ie; sprint at&t, etc?

This should be simple but I can't seem to find what I am looking for.I want to search a text file for the existence of certain strings and execute a command if they exist, something along the lines of:
if <string> exists
command
or
if <any member of this list exists>
command
I know how to manually search a file with grep, cat, etc., but the "if this exists" part eludes me.

I have just configured CentOS server my new office. This is the first time I am using CentOS.
Whenever I am trying to change the webroot of the httpd server, it usually say "directory doesn't exist". whereas which can't be the case as it is home directory of the user.
To achieve this, what Do I need to do?
The second issue, I am facing that whenever I am adding new directories to public_html folder, it is not accessible. as the error page 404 is shown. I have changed the permissions to 0705 and ownership is also transferred to other user. What else is required to make new directories accessible by the web?

I've used worked with gentoo for a little while but I kind of get annoyed by the rolling release. It seems that I need to emerge something every week. So I was wondering if there was a source based distro that had a dated release of stable packages, kind of like ubuntu. The primary use of this distro will be for my latitude 2100 net-book with touchscreen and an atom processor, so it will need to have a fairly new kernel. Also, I love the way gentoo is built from scratch. It allows for a very clean system. I would be happy with either linux or bsd based system. Also, since it is this is a notebook, I would like to be able to compile through a nfs network so i can use the resources from another system.

I've run into a problem when trying to restore a file using AMANDA. My setup is as follows: I have a server that runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4 and I have a client that runs on Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4. I successfully backed up files on the client using AMANDA.
Now I am trying to restore a file from the backup and restore it to the client running Red Hat Enterprise Linux AS release 4. In order to do this, I have to go through the server which runs Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server release 5.4.
Here is the problem I encounter. When I try the restore, it freezes at the extraction process. I've left it running for the night and still it is stuck at the same place. The restore never completes.
So I'm wondering if anyone knows what seems to be the issue? Could it be that the AMANDA driver I installed does not allow restore with different versions of Red Hat? Or is there an update in Red Hat 4 that would fix this issue?

I have a compiled program, a tagger to identify parts of text, which claims it does not exist. This executable has to be called by a generated script, which is how I ran into this issue. What are the reasons this error could show up?The executable was copied from another machine. The file does have execution privileges (it gives a proper not-allowed message without them)I've tried copying the file to a different location (same problem)I've tried replacing the file with a fresh copy (same problem)The file does exist. Opening it with pico shows a file with binary data.
