I have an external USB drive that is NTFS. It mounts fine under my account and my wife's, but only if I fully shut-down the computer between switching. While switching users or logging out then in with a different account it will not mount the drive. I am not sure what to do... but we both access data from the same drive.
View 2 RepliesI have both xmonad and Gnome installed and tend to switch between them quite often. Normally, I need to log out and log back in which is starting to become annoying because I need to open any running applications again.I have tried using "Switch User", but it doesn't work. I go to the switching screen when I am logged into Gnome and log in again after selecting Xmonad, but it brings me back to my Gnome session.
So is there any way to log in as the same user with two different desktop environments at the same time?
Just had ModSecurity with CRS installed for me on my hosted website, which I'm hardening after a recent hack. My site is a php-based user community with MySQL back end, so people register as members via php.
First, I'd like to properly log malicious activity Then I'd like to deny access where an attack looks likely Thing is, I'm not sure which /etc/apache2/modsecurity_crs modsecurity config files to tweak.then I can't even see my login page because I'm forbidden from the .php file it loads.I'm guessing I need to change rules individually but I have no idea how or which to change to stop attacks. The CRS documentation is just a bit too heavy to give me the basics.
How can I change my audio output (and input) from one device to another?

Changing settings in Phonon is a hassle, and it still won't change the sound immediately for the apps... Is there a quick way to just disable one device and enable the other, without having to restart the apps that use them? (For instance, right now Skype and my browser are outputting to headphones and amarok to my speakers - one enabled device that receives everything, bang! output for everything to another device and the first device is having a nap)
I can't see any settings in KMix to facilitate such a change...
what I can do to change sound cards quickly and easily?
I recall doing this in seconds in Ubuntu via their mixer, so would it be similar if I ditched KDE in favor of Gnome??

I have POPFile in my startup applications. I know how to automatically kill it when login out but cannot find a way to kill it if I just switch users (other than manually stopping it). It's important to kill it when using the switch users function because the new user will have access to the old user's POPFile database, have access to his email, etc, if I do not.I have a "lynx -dump http://127.0.0.1:8080/shutdown &>/dev/null" line in my /etc/gdm/PostSession/Default file that shuts down POPFile at log out. I need to do the same or something similar when switching user. Is there a way?

And its been like that for 10 min I am too scared to do ctrl alt backspace because its going to log me off of everything
View 1 Replies View RelatedSince upgrading from 9.10 to 10.04, the "Switch User" functionality no longer works. I had hoped that upgrading to 10.10 might resolve the issue, but no joy. I am using 32bit Ubuntu 10.10 on a Levono R51 laptop, with three users. 9.10 was installed from a LiveCD, and I have partitioned the hard drive so that OS is in the first partition, and the three home directories are in the second partition (just in case I need to do a complete re-installation from LiveCD). Most of time only one person uses the laptop, but if a second person tries to switch from the current session and log in, they are greeted with the following;
-- a black horizontal line (approx top quarter of the screen)
-- a purple background with the Ubuntu title and 5 red dots (lower 3/4 of screen) -- but no login screen
-- moving the mouse renders a white box (approx 1x1 inches) with some black marks
The original user can recover their session with Ctrl-Alt-F7, but this essentially makes the laptop only usable for one person (one active login) unless the original user logs off.
I have been experiencing issues when switching users since my last update; I filed a bug, but I was interested if anybody else was having the same problem:URL...In a nutshell the computer freezes temporarily during the switch user process. The longer it is running, the longer the freeze lasts. When frozen the screen is black except for a mouse pointer; but the mouse and keyboard are not responsive including the usual X command keys (Ctrl-Alt-Del, Ctrl-Alt-Bksp, Ctrl-Alt-F1, etc.).When I get the chance I am going to rollback gdm to see if that makes a difference.

I guess I have to edit the sudoers file to give user1 (the user executing the script) privileges to be able to log as user2 with no password prompt. When I attempt to switch from the user that I am currently logged into, to another user who is also logged in, I get a black screen.
To elaborate, here is the exact sequence of events:

- I get the login screen
- I select user B and enter my password

I thought, that "Removable devices" module in KDE system settings supposed to automount removable devices. But when any removable media inserted, absolutely nothing happens.

1. It should be mounted automatically for me. Now it isn't, though it appears in fdisk -l output: Code: Disk /dev/sdd: 8006 MB, 8006926336 bytes

I'm facing an odd issue with my Ubuntu 10.04. So, I have WLAN activated and working on my user account. Then I switch to another account on the same computer and nm-applet tray icon disappears! I have activated the option that all users may use the WLAN connection, but the tray-icon doesn't show up for other users. Only the one who logs in first sees it. Network connection is working properly, but the tray icon would be handy.
Trying to start nm-applet manually in terminal results in an error saying that nm-applet is already running (sure it is, on the first account that logged in). But is it possible to have the tray icon visible for all users?
Sitting at the console, I log in with any user name and NO PASSWORD IS REQUESTED. I get logged in automatically without entering the user's password.
I did:
passwd joeuser
To change his password and still he goes right in without being asked for a password!
Possibly related- 10 days ago, my smtp server was breached as a spam relay. The username they cracked was deleted. I added fail2ban for postfix. The logs show no further intrusion.
I wanted to know is there any way to monitor (I mean log)all of the activity of the users that logging in a server (as root) for example:
1.when do they logging in
2.what commands do they use at what time ( I know that history command do somehow the same but it does not save all of the activity of users exactly with the time of that activity)
3.which one of them installed which package on the server
4.what did they copy or move at what time and summery all the activity that each of them do on the server individually.
I came into this strange behavior related to mounting DVDs and/or CDs in SuSE 11.2 : after inserting a DVD intro the DVD unit, and mounting it through the "device notifier" applet, I find the disk mounted in /media under a folder named after the disk label (as expected) BUT ... the folder is in fact padded with blanks after the name found as label for the disk. For ex.: I have a DVD called DVD_ROCK2 The mounting is made in "/media/DVD_ROCK2 " (the folder created at mounting time in /media has 14 characters (if I counted them correctly) instead of the only 8 from the name of the disk This does affect my application "cdcollect", which crashes when it encounters a mounted disk which contains spaces in it's label.
I tried to adjust cdcollect, by modifying it's dources (trying to "trim" the name readed as disk-label, but with no results; anyway I am not good at C#, and even kinda hate this language, so... I'd prefer a solution coming from Linux's point of view: what changed in the mounting system from Suse 11.1 till now ? what can I do to change this way of mounting the disks ?I cannot state this happens with every single one of my DVDs; the ones wich are mounted this way are generally written in the same PC, in older versions of SuSE (11.0 and 11.1). Unfortunatelly, I had an older written disk (way back on SuSE 9.x) which does not behave this way (it is mounted in a folder with the name created exactly as the label is, without the padded spaces).
I'm trying to build a custom setup that requires a flash drive and a CD to both be mounted to root. Applications, boot data, and other static directories are on the CD, while /home, /opt, and /tmp are on the flash drive. Is there a special option I can enter into fstab to allow this? If not, I intend to modify my kernel to allow this, but I'll need to find the sources that control this function.

Our logging in to find that pc, will be wasting the cpu resources. And may disturb the user who is working on the x-session.
When I installed slackare 13 it detected usb drives and cameras automaticallyow it doesn't. I am runnning a 13.0 system, not current, so I have only applied the updates in that branch (iirc including a new kernel).nowadays when i plug a device in it does not seem to be detected by HAL (i.e not in KDE).However the device is listed if you use the command "lsusb" and the computer obviously knows it has been plugged in as there is a relevant entry in dmesg.Sorry for the generallised nature of the post, but I don't really know anything about HAL or how it can have stopped working

It might have started when I booted in failsafe graphics mode and after that, it never went away. Could be wrong about how it happened but is there a way to get out of failsafe mode? Or a way to reconfigure default, normal graphics?

View 5 Replies View RelatedBlock Users from USB Drive/Devices and CD-Rom I am using Ubuntu 9.10- the Karmic Koala(64 bit) in my company. I would like to block the users(except Super user) from using USB Drive/Devices and CD-Rom for security resons and to prevent my employees from copying data.
In Users Settings, I tried unchecking some items in User Privileges tab but it didn't work.
I'm using Debian Stretch with Gnome and Cinnamon. My desktop computer sports an nvidia geforce 970 gpu (this may be relevant, and it is the reason I had to go with stretch.) I'm not a very experienced linux user but I get along fine.
I'm sharing my computer with my mom and whenever we have to switch users, the computer seems to shut down for 35 seconds: the screen doesn't receive signal anymore. After a new user is chosen, it takes another 35 seconds to get to her session. This is embarassing because my os runs on an ssd and everything else is nice and fast. At first I thought it may be a matter of us two not using the same window manager or not using the "default" window manager, but changing window managers didn't work.
Today I learned about the existence of /var/log/syslog and I decided to check what happened to it when I switched users. I can't post the whole log of what happens because it is too big, but I put it on pastebin : [URL] ....
I understand almost nothing of what is written here, but I saw some interesting things:
- after 35 seconds intervals where nothing is logged, there is a stall on cpu detected (lines 68, 500)
- my gpu seems to have something to do in all this
My normal prompt looks like: username(at)ubuntu + current directory. (Odd format, it doesn't really look like that, but I was told I needed 15 posts to post an URL).Whenever I change user with "su username" (at least when changing from root to normal user), this prompt completely disappears. All it says on the left in front of the input "$". Also the history doesn't work, and the tab key doesn't complete anything, but rather acts as the normal tab in an editor. do I fix this? It is very annoying. Sorry for the stupid question, but I've searched around for an answer, finding none.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am running a remote login server where I have multiple users. I am using No Machine NX for the remote login software. I also used Ubuntu Tweak and did some editing in gconf-editor in order to lockdown the machine. In the end the user has some files on their desktop they can view and one panel with a logoff button. This system has been in place for about 2 years now and running pretty smoothly.
I am not sure if this is an NX problem or Gnome problem. I have just one user, all of a sudden, that has nothing on the desktop and no panel when they login. The system was set for each user to have their /home folder as their desktop folder. I am not sure where to start trouble shooting this. I have looked a quite at few of the gconf.xml fiels for the user, but do not see anything out of the ordinary (comparing to other user's gconf.xml files)
I have a non-super user on my box which I'd like to give it MOUNT and UMOUNT permissions but I don't know how.For example purposes, the user name is "USER".I don't want to make it into a SuperUser, just give it rights to be able to issue the MOUNT and UMOUNT commands at the terminal.

When I choose "Switch From <user>..." in the logout menu on the top-right of my screen, it jumps to the login screen (gdm) but it doesn't show any usernames as it should.I wish I could get a screenshot of gdm but I'm not sure how.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI installed KDE 4.3.5 on my existing Gnome desktop and i have two users using the computer. Now from Gnome I am accustomed to switch between session very easy and the sessions continue to run. If I use the Switch option from KDE it just looks my screen and does not switch. Is it possible that I miss some programs? I installed it with Yast and used the group option. I am pretty sure that I missed something during the installation.
