How do you do it today with Ubuntu 10.10?I want:* A VNC server always running* The server should start at boot time* The user should come to the login screen of ubuntu and need to loginI have Googled, but there are so many versions of this and none of those I tried solve all of the above requirements.

I've got the file permissions set, but I'd also like to restrict their access to the terminal. It seems to me that most of the damage that can be done to a computer goes through the terminal.I downloaded Pessulus (I use Gnome)but it doesn't require a password. the profiled user can just open Pessulus and alter their profile -- what's the point? Is there a way I can require a user to enter a password, either for any terminal or Pessulus?I like Pessulus -- it's concise and easy to use. But it doesn't seem very secure as I understand it.

View 1 Replies View RelatedIs there a way using dpkg or apt-get to segregate user application packages from system packages? What I envision is an /apps directory structure that can be the install target for selected packages so not to "clutter" the storage areas for the system administration files/packages - maybe even with permissions set so that (a GROUP of) users could install packages on an Ubuntu server w/o SysAdmin guidance. This could also allow 1)system upgrades with or w/o including these packages, and 2)the sharing of /apps (via NFS) among common Ubuntu systems. Is this doable using the dpkg or apt maintenance tools?

Does anybody know an mp3 player that will run without these graphic issues?

Im kind of newbie trying to figure out a LAMP setup that will require as little maintenance as possible, and still be reasonable secure and maintained. After lots of googeling i think CentOs 5.x looks nice, the only problem is that i need PHP5.2.13 or later. If i add it from some 3 rd party repository it looks easy to install but what happens when there is security patches needed etc?I dont like the idea of compiling it myself, I would probably get it running but there is always lots of do and donts that im unaware about to get it right not only running.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to use LDAP on SUSE 10 to authorize the use of certain objects within IBM's MQ Series via the setmqaut command. I do not want to authenticate these users to the Linux server itself via LDAP. Users that actually log onto the Linux server will be authenticated through a product from Quest formly known as VAS. My question is, does LDAP require the use of PAM or can I utilize the facilities within LDAP to communicate with a Windows Active Directory so that I can authorize the use of MQ Series objects and not authenticate actual users that would log onto the server.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn the ubuntu series I find my hard disk description as this: /dev/sda. As we know in slackware (10.1) for partitioning we either use 'fdisk' or 'cfdisk' when I use fdisk, like mentioned: fdisk /dev/sda. It says disk cannot be found.... or something like that. I think I know why?
You see my hard disk has the D: E: F: as extended partitions comprising logical drives and only my C: drive is pure primary. Does this have any connection with my problem? As from my explanation you can find that I'm a total wreck with computers.. but I'm very thrilled to learn linux. The reason why I need slax is that I require a traditional root account.

AT LEAST!because i think it is not normal to don't be able o install blender, remember ubuntu is a linux, then blender should work on.i tested to install many mounth ago, when i i stalled the last version (9.xxx), and it did the same, then i think it is not an update problem at all.
View 2 Replies View RelatedFirst time posting here, sort of long time slacker with some gaps in between... Anyway, I have a sort of question/feature request. First of all, I fully understand the KISS philosophy from Slackware. Story: I co-worker of my was looking for a Linux distro to install into a VM that he would be able to carry around in an USB memory from work to home. I suggested for him to try slackware. However, he has a limitation of ~2gb to the installation size, and he doesn't need most of the packages. With this in mind, I helped him select the more relevants one, but it was a pain to make an installation that both works AND attends the 2gb maximum limitation.
From that experience, and also having in mind the KISS philosophy from Slackware, comes my question/sugestion: why not provide an install option like "Custom Packages Script", that will load a single script file from a USB/mounted partition and install pre-selected packages that a person has selected and build the script from? This would allow anyone to build a custom Slackware installation and share it with the community.
I want to add 50 new users, not on the server yet I want to add them all to group Accounting - with 1 option, not user by user I want to setup a default password for them all, and have it say something like 'You must now change password or no access will be permitted' Any other options I also want to do once, not for each user?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am using mint 8 for a 2 weeks, I am noob to linux but I like Mint than any other linux distro which is great alternative to windows. I have a problem regarding password reseting.

2. I tried to change password for newly created user and root user using graphical way but it does not work.

How can make my laptop to ask password when mint get booted? How to change password for other users?
I've looked everywhere but I can't find where to change the default box for incoming mail, or am I on the wrong track. View 1 Replies View RelatedI am using the sudo command to log on locally as another user by the following command:
sudo -u theotheruser -s
or
sudo -u theotheruser sh

I'm developing an application in which one user must run java software that I'm compiling as another user. I wanted to give user A permission to see the bin direcory of my workspace, which is in the home directory of user B. I was wondering how can this be done? I gave the bin direcotry full read/execute premissions, but since it's in my home directory user A can't navigate to it.
I know there are a few ways I could get around the problem but they arn't very elegant. I was wondering if there is a simple method for giving a user access to a specific directory without giving access to all the parent directories. I tried symbolic link but user A still can't access it, and a hard link to a directory isn't allowed in Linux. I don't feel like making a hard link to every single file in the bin directory, and I'm not sure that would work anyways, since every recompile overwrites them.
What is the difference between creating a "regular" user and creating a "system" user on Linux?
For example:
Code:
adduser john
Code:
adduser --system john
Similarly it seems there are normal groups and system groups. Doing an internet search and reading man pages does not give much information on the whole concept of system and regular user/group.
Since I upgraded to 10.04 Lucid the Shut Down applet puts up a window titled "Shut Down" that has two buttons "Cancel" and "Shut Down". In 9.04 this confirmation window didn't appear. How can I make "Shut Down" skip the confirmation and shut down directly? I've looked around for a preference item about that a couple of times but didn't find it.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm looking for a Linux command that can change ownership of all files belonging to a given user, preferably in a targeted directory, to another specified user. My dream command would look something like this. chuser -R --olduser tom --newuser jerry
This is my scenario... I have a backup file (.tgz) with user and group information preserved in it. It was taken from a web server running Apache and MySQL. The files in the backup are from across the system and contain files from several different users and several system type accounts and it is key that when restored on the new server the settings are not lost. The problem is that the users on the machine the files are being restored to don't match the ones in the backup file. For instance both machines had a MySQL user but they have different user ids and there are several user ids that existed on both machines that belong to different users. This means there is no way to sync the users on the new machine to the ones on the old machine. I can find all the users files with the find command like this...
find /decompressed-backup-dir -uid 1050
or
find /decompressed-backup-dir -user tom
If, as I suspect, there is no way to do what I want with a single command then perhaps there is a way to pipe the results of the find command to another command to handle the ownership change?
I could do this with a PHP script but there are 4GB and tens of thousands of files in the backup so I don't want to use PHP or Perl but I would be happy with a shell script that could handle it.
i'm new to linux and just installed Ubuntu and decided to play around with it. i just executed
Code: useradd test which supposedly creates a folder in the home directory '/home/test' but when i look in there i can't see it i also did a
Code: grep test /etc/passwd which returns: 'test:x:1001:1001::/home/test:/bin/sh' which i believe means it is meant to exist.
Addendum: I have also now noticed that when i log in and log back in i have the option to login as 'test' but it prompts me for a password which i did not set :s
