Recently I had a Java exploit on Windows. Luckily Microsoft Security Essentials identified and removed it. Such things can happen on Linux as well, from what I've heard. Why does Linux offer no such detection?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI would like to use my Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic system to scan and clean viruses from Windows based HDD. I have KlamAV, AVG, and AVAST. I couldn't get F-prot to work. I don't find a debian package of it and don't know how to install tar.gz and the tutorials don't help a lot. Are there other antivirus solutions which are good for cleaning Windows OS but work on Linux/WINE? I wonder if I can install antivirus software in WINE and scan with no problem the hard disks.
View 5 Replies View RelatedOn xfce I really liked orage, however on fluxbox I don't want to install all its dependencies (xfce4-gui, xfce4panel, +++) for just a calendar. So, I'm looking for a light calendar app that will allow me to store appointments. Ideally it would integrate nicely with fluxbox, so either launchable by clicking on the clock, or else mapped transparently onto the desktop just like conky. If it could work with conky that would be pretty ideal as well, and it must have the ability to send notifications (either by sound or screen) about upcoming appointments, reminders, etc.
I've seen xcalendar mentioned on these forums, but it doesn't seem to be in the repos anymore (squeeze). Also rainlender, though I don't like that it's not in the repos and has pro/free versions. Sunbird is an option, but kind of large and clunky for what I'll be using it for. Right now I'm thinking gdeskcal is my best bet, but I'm hoping others will have better ideas. If gdeskcal fails to impress, I may have no choice but to go with sunbird (aka iceowl) and perhaps use conky to display the calendar on the desktop, and make it launchable from clicking the clock on fluxbox. My mail application is claws, which has some limited vlcalendar functionality.
I'm using squeeze. hal allows any user (at least, ones logged into the console) the ability to automount any removable drive that is plugged in. I want to restrict the ability to automount to users who are in the group that owns the device node for the drive (some distributions use the "plugdev" group for this.) I know I can turn off automount individually in each desktop, but seeing as hal is the thing that runs as root and is actually doing the mounting, it seems to make the most sense to change the setting in hal.

Why does this webpage require closed-source software to view the lectures? Specifically I am having trouble with http://mitworld.mit.edu/video/861
I see that the site requests access to google-analytics and/or hitbox is that necessary to view the information? And can I watch with a non-Adobe flash player?

Does anybody know an mp3 player that will run without these graphic issues?

Is there any open source Linux distribution available, which has built in anti-virus package installed, like kaspersky, mcafee or trend micro, so that I can able to scan my windows XP based machines which are on the network, and can be scan and clean remotely through this type of Linux distribution installed machine. I have search on a internet that some Live rescue Linux cd's are available, which can scan and clean the virus of windows machines. like F-secure Live cd, or knoppex Linux based Bit defender live cds that can be most effective to resolve this issue. But is there any distribution available like these live Linux distribution cd's, that can be installed in dedicated system to scan/clean the remote windows machines. Or is live cd can be installed on hard drive?

I tried:

I've found a couple good articles but everything I've tried hasn't fixed my problem? View 1 Replies View RelatedI want to use LDAP on SUSE 10 to authorize the use of certain objects within IBM's MQ Series via the setmqaut command. I do not want to authenticate these users to the Linux server itself via LDAP. Users that actually log onto the Linux server will be authenticated through a product from Quest formly known as VAS. My question is, does LDAP require the use of PAM or can I utilize the facilities within LDAP to communicate with a Windows Active Directory so that I can authorize the use of MQ Series objects and not authenticate actual users that would log onto the server.
View 3 Replies View RelatedIn the ubuntu series I find my hard disk description as this: /dev/sda. As we know in slackware (10.1) for partitioning we either use 'fdisk' or 'cfdisk' when I use fdisk, like mentioned: fdisk /dev/sda. It says disk cannot be found.... or something like that. I think I know why?
You see my hard disk has the D: E: F: as extended partitions comprising logical drives and only my C: drive is pure primary. Does this have any connection with my problem? As from my explanation you can find that I'm a total wreck with computers.. but I'm very thrilled to learn linux. The reason why I need slax is that I require a traditional root account.

I noticed that there have been a lot PORNO site visits from the desktop. The computer kinda running slow- Although I tried to scan - avg and f-prot- somehow I don't see theme scanning my pc - so I can't find any kind of spyware or virus- which I think impossible since there have 100 s of visits on those free adult sites and I am sure they would leave some footprints on my machine.
