Since I upgraded to 10.04 Lucid the Shut Down applet puts up a window titled "Shut Down" that has two buttons "Cancel" and "Shut Down". In 9.04 this confirmation window didn't appear. How can I make "Shut Down" skip the confirmation and shut down directly? I've looked around for a preference item about that a couple of times but didn't find it.
View 3 RepliesOfflate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista.

3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM
I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue.
I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ?

View 7 Replies View RelatedWhen shutting down 10.04 you are forced to deal with a confirmation window. In previous releases it was possible to switch this off, e.g. right click shutdown button or using gconf-editor. I can't remove this feature bug in 10.04.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a DNS server at an old companies place and that box will be losing it's IP. The whois record for the domain goes to godaddy which has 2 'A' records;
ns.domain.com
ns2.domain.com which point to the current 2 DNS servers. Now if I have a new server up and running and the zones copied over, do I just need to change the 'A' location for ns.domain.com to this new IP? I remember back in the day you had to 'register' the nameserver with the registrar, etc.I haven't touched this stuff in a while, and before I go and change the IP of the nameserver, want to make sure all is in check.

The script will run when you enter 'y' or 'yes' and then press enter.
I'm trying to give that input via another script which runs the first one and then waits for the prompt to input a 'y'.How can I make a script which waits for a prompt and then gives it input?
In Ubuntu, When I type sudo and hit enter, the new command will appear on the command line, instead of simply executing. This is different from other operating systems I've used, such as older ubuntu's, mac osx and debian. Is there a way of disabling this confirmation and having it simply execute the command?

I thought the -v would give me some feedback as well as an "are you sure" dialog before deleting. But when I run Shred it just deletes the file without any feedback and no confirmation beforehand.
How can I get a confirmation prompt to occur before shredding occurs (to prevent me from accidentaly shredding something--sometimes I click the wrong item cause the mouse shifts last second).

- On 13.0, running ntpd 4.2.4p8, reassuring messages appeared in /var/log/messages like "synchronized to 211.233.84.186, stratum 2".
- On 13.1, running ntpd 4.2.6p1, there are no messages in /var/log/messages to confirm that time is being synchronised.

According to Linux Home Networking, synchronization can be checked using ntpq -p. This shows synchronization is working. I would prefer to see that confirmation in /var/log/messages without having to run a command manually to check it. How to get the old messages back?

View 2 Replies View RelatedI just remotely updated my uncle's Ubuntu 10.10 desktop to 11.04. My uncle has no computer skills, so it is very important that I troubleshoot his problems using VNC. After completing the 11.04 upgrade, I was not able to connect to him via VNC. After some fiddling around I was able to connect by turning off the confirmation option in the Security section. We are now using the password security option. The problem is that my uncle does not have any security against my peering eyes.
I tried reinstalling Vinagre, but that didn't help. Is it possible to get the confirmation option working again somehow?

The problem is that stdinput has been redirected to file agenda.dat so when I do "read answer" it reads the next line from the file.

My laptop has EFI, but I think the default 10.04 AMD64 install uses regular BIOS bootloader. The HD isn't GPT though as far as I know, it's MBR, as Gparted says it's MSDOS.. (but i do have an ext4 partition, the ntfs HP recovery partition, and a small HP tools EFI partitions, at the very end of the HD).. How do I install it, should I, is there a benefit (memory?)?

View 9 Replies View RelatedIt appears that Lucid has done away with the gksu prompt that used to greet you when you try to mount a partition. Is there any known way of restoring this? I have a number of partitions which I would rather have protected by a password (even though I know that booting a live cd will give anyone access to any mountable partition, no questions asked). I've had a quick look in gconf and found nothing that looks like it would control this behaviour, but it's quite likely that I overlooked something.
