General :: Way To Create Newusers And Givin Passwds In Ubuntu
Feb 19, 2011
I've created 10 new users for my machine. And I want to keep same login password for all of the users. Its very tedious job to enter the same password everytime while creating the new users. Is there any way to do this job?

I recently used the newusers command to generate several user accounts from a text file. That process seemed to go well until I tried to su into one of the new accounts.
This behavior appears for all the accounts that were created from the text file and the newusers command. It seems that several configuration files that should have been autogenerated for these new users were never created. I was able to confirm this was the problem by copying .bashrc and .bash_profile from a user that was created with the "useradd" command into the /home/newaccount directory. After logging off and logging into the newaccount again, the issue is corrected. For the record, I just read this forum post and I'm looking for an alternative to this. If this is the most efficient way to accomplish my goal, then I'll try the route mentioned in the thread. I'm still open to alternatives.

i am running into few problems with the script here. I have an FTP server, all configured, and i need to have a script that will create a folder with current dated within a tree as soon as particular user logs in. I was wondering if that is possible with proftpd. if not, can someone suggest how to create a script that will simply create a DIR with date and autorun itself every 24 hours? i am running Debian/Proftpd with Mysql authorization.

I recently bought an host to have a personal website and would like to create a bash script to create make a mirror copy of it and then add it to crontab to run once a week. Essentially what I want to do is to get the website by using wget -m ftp://user***@ftp.host/mydir
Once this is done I'd like to have everything in an archive called mysite.date.tar.7z I've no experience at all of bash scripting but I guess this should be an easy task? How to make the user and password not visible ? Is there any other option better than wget? (maybe rsync it works better?)

I'm an intermediate Linux user and a relative beginner to servers. I would like some help finding resources on setting up a basic server. I have Googled, and am a member of the Ubuntu Forums, but just figure it can't hurt to ask the Stack Overflow community for help as well. I plan on installing on an old laptop (Lenovo Thinkpad R61i or Toshiba Satellite A105). I have downloaded the latest Ubuntu (9.10) but don't know how to do any of the configurations.
I just want a server to store my files where I can access (download and/ or stream) from a browser.

Okay so first of all, let me give you a background info.I have an HP Mini 311 with a 250GB hdd and 2GB Ram. I have successfully setup a tripple-boot with SnowLeopard/Win7/Ubuntu10.10.Okay so
First, using "Disk Utility," I format the OSX partiton to Extended(journaled) and install OSX accordingly.
Second, I install Windows 7.
Third, I use Netbookinstaller to install Chameleon 2.0 onto the OSX partition.
Fourth, using DIskPart.exe i set the Win7 Partition(#3) as active and then run the Repair(and Restart) option in the Win7 USB install media, to fix some boot error I do not know much about. Then use"DIskPart. exe" again, to set the EFI partition(#1) as active partition again.I now have a fully operational dual-boot with SnowLeo and Windows 7.
I setup a triple-boot with SnowLeo/Win7/Ubuntu10.10 by using GParted to add and format 2 additional partitions. The first formatted Ext4 for Ubuntu to be installed onto and the second i set about 4GB as "Swap" area. Then i just install Ubuntu with the Grub bootloader being installed onto the same partition as Ubuntu.I now have a fully operational triple-boot with SnowLeo, Win7 and Ubuntu. So I saw this link about creating an additional "storage" partition, on a dual-boot system, and setting it up so that Windows 7 and Ubuntu can share the same files automatically.
I really want to set this up on my triple-boot system, and here is the problem i run into: Simply adding another partition, messes up my windows 7 boot entirely. And i figured out the cause of this might be due to harddrives only being able to handle 4 primary partitions. So i figure that if setup Ubuntu and the Swap-area into an Extended Partiton, this would solve all of my problems.I cannot figure out how to setup an extended partition on my harddrive without messing something use up irreparably. This is only my second

I am trying to create a new domain on an Ubuntu server version. the man page tells me to type
[URL]
When I do this it tells me that the command CREATE is not recognized. I realize (and hope) that this is probably extremely simple but can anyone help me with this? To give an idea of what I am trying to do. I am a network technician and I work with a Windows Server 2003 network. I am trying to create a separate domain for our training classes with linux to reduce costs. I still want to connect to the internet through our existing domain. I have all of the computers connected to the internet and set up including this server but I have not been able to get the server to become a name server so I can change the domain on all of the linux computers that I set up to have them on a separate domain.

I tried following this tutorial on how to create a Debian/Ubuntu package and ran into the following stumbling block: When I tried installing debmake (a tool to easily create Debian packages; trying to debian-package a jhbuild prefix and upload it to a PPA) I got an error from APT saying that the package was not found. After an extensive Google search, I noticed that the package was only used in Ubuntu up to Hardy and after that was deprecated. Why? Did dpkg-dev suddenly include the deb-make command in its package or something?
After reading the deprecation announcement on the mailing list located in the Google search it seems as though debhelper replaces debmake.

I do have all basic programming knowledge, I know what to do when it comes to C,C++, Python ETC.So what I want to do is is make my own OS based off a linux kernal or anything else. But I dont know where exactly to start, ive read the whole LFS book already and yeah but like im still confused because im already dual booted with windows 7 and Ubuntu, so in order to start do I need to dump my HDD completely or do I only need to uninstall 1 OS out of 2 ?
Also if I want to do this using the LFS live CD as a host where do I start with that when beginning to write my own OS?

I tried searching the Internet, but could not find a decent tutorial explaining how to create a bootable Ubuntu Linux (10.04) USB installation that could be run not only on a PC but also on Macs and MacBook Pros. In addition, I tried refit, but ended with "Missing operating system" error. Here is basically the layout of my bootable under PC Ubuntu USB drive (using MBR):Partition 1 (ext3, bootable) - Ubuntu Linux 32 bit, contains also grub2 bootloader.Partition 2 (ext3) - Ubuntu Linux 64 bit.Partition 3 (fat32) - contains data. What would be the best way to enable this drive to boot under Mac OS X? And if refit has to be used, could I simply have one more partition on the USB drive containing it?

Firstly, what's the best way to execute commands on startup, cron? Can I use su in a shell script to switch between different users, if so how?
How do I create several detached screen sessions on startup? screen -A -m -d -S test ./script.sh seems like it should work but using it in a script started by cron doesn't show any screen sessions running after booting.
It looks like the screen session is closed after the command finishes executing, can I keep it open so I can see the output?

Are there any other archiving tools than tar that preserve Linux file permissions and user/group flags? I want to create archives of a directory tree on my ubuntu box. The directory trees are large, a first run with tar cvpzf archive.tgz /home/foo/bar yielded a 5GB archive. I also want to keep all permissions and other flags and special files.I'm fine with a 5GB archive, however to look inside that archive -- since it is a compressed tar archive -- the whole 5GB have to be decompressed first! (Or so it appears when opening it with the archive viewer -- I'm happy to be corrected.)So I need a way to "backup" a directory (tree) while preserving full filesystem attributes and right and creating an archive with an "index" that hasn't to be decompressed for browsing its contents. An archive is either a single file, or a (small) set of files that carries full and complete information within this file/s. That is, it can live on any filesystem (size permitting), it can be burnt onto a DVD, you can split it (after which the point of this question is really lost - but still), ...

So I tried accessing the Trash folder using cd. I cd into ~/.local/share then try the following command.cd Trash I get this message. bash: cd: Trash: No such file or directory When I type ls in the share folder I get the following.
gsettings-data-convert gvfs-metadata Trash
So the trash folder is in there but i can't access it. Why? Also I want a computer shortcut in my desktop like in windows where I can access all the folders from.

I am supposed to create a .tgz with the filename : hostname-day-date-HH:MM:ss.tgz
The .tgz gets created with the correct filename but when I try to unpack it the filename can't be resolved, it's the : that mess things up.
