General :: Resize Partitions Ubuntu 11.04
Jun 1, 2011I am currently running Ubuntu 11.04 (narwhal), dualbooting with Windows 7. When I installed ubuntu, i gave it a small(er) partition size for it to use (10gb total for swap and main partition). I now find I have run out of room on my Ubuntu partition, and want to (if possible) shrink down my Windows partioion and move some of that freed space to Ubuntu to expand it.I tried to use gParted from a live Ubuntu CD, but I can't seem to move any unused space into the Ubuntu partitions. Am i doing something wrong?

Mar 22, 2011I have a windows box running w2003 server on 1 volume with 2x ntfs basic partitions. c: = the windows bit, d: = the data bit for user data.I have cloned (clonezilla) the volume to another and deleted the data (d bit and want to extend the c: into the freed space.I'm booted from a partedmagicv5 cd and using gparted to attempt this.I can't see a way to do this with gparted but then, I could be thick. Maybe I clone off reformat and copy back?Is there a better way or even is this the correct forum (please don't refer me to Microsoft website:-) for this type of question?This is a test box so not worried about breaking it, but the test is to try to solve a live problem at a school I support which is running out of hd space.

Jun 13, 2011I'm dual booting Ubuntu with Windows7. Instructions I've found on how to resize partitions tell me to open gparted and shrink things from there. However, I can't seem to do this because:
-I can't expand the windows partition because i first need to shrink the linux partition
-I can't shrink the linux partition because it is mounted
-I can't unmount the linux partition because it is being used.
So how exactly do I expand my Windows partition?

Jul 2, 2011I want to increase the size of my Linux partition (yellow and highlighted in image), which is situated in an extended partition, along with my biggest partition.
When I try to select the options from any partitioning software (EASUS, Paragon, Gparted) the option to resize is not available (or can't enlarge).
For example in the Paragon Hard Disk Manager, I can't add free space before the partition, even if I first shrink the "G:" partition, then try to enlarge the one with Linux.
Do you know what's happening here? Why am I not allowed to resize the partition?

Aug 24, 2009Googling tells you how to resize RAID partitions but not how to resize the underlying disk partitions. In my particular case, I initially sized a RAID array way too large - and when I added another disk to the array, I decided I was wasting too much space.I shrunk the file system, then "grew" the array (/dev/md2) to the smaller size, and resized the file system again to fit. However the actual disk partitions (/dev/sda2, /dev/sdb2, etc.) are still the original size - they are just mostly unused space.As I understand it, the superblocks are at the end of the partition. I believe this means the end of space used by the array on each device, so that the superblock moved to a lower block number when I shrunk the array. However it also means that I need to get the new physical partition size correct to avoid clobbering the superblock.
Is there an easy way to get any partition editor to shrink the physical partitions to the new array size?If not, is the superblock included in the space allocated to the array so that the next partition can start in the very next block, or is it added after the array so I'd need to allow some space for it?

When the fedora lvm parition is selected gparted says "No lvm support at this time". I am using gparted through the pmagic (partedmagic) linux boot disk. I have almost the lastest pmagic (5.7) there is a pmagic 5.8 on source forge.

Jan 21, 2010My ubuntu partition is tiny (~9 GB, ~5 free) and my vista partition is big (~100 GB, ~60 free). I need to reverse this (so I can move all my documents and music (~40 GB) over to the ubuntu portion from the external HD they're on now). I'm using karmic. I installed gparted, but I couldn't figure out how to make it let me access the resize option.
So I booted with the karmic live CD and used gparted there. It let me set up the shrink on the vista partition, but gave me an error in actual running (I'll post the error details at the bottom).
The error details seem to be saying that I should try shrinking it less? But I was already leaving more than 10 GB free space there, no? Does anyone know how to help me past this sticking point here? This is one of the vital steps for me in switching over to using ubuntu as my main OS, and hopefully leaving vista behind.

Ubuntu :: Windows XP / Dual Boot - Resize Two Different Partitions?
Jan 6, 2011I am running a dual boot with XP and Ubuntu - what I want to do is increase the partition size of Ubuntu and reduce XP. When I run " G Parted" it shows both partitions with Xp being NTFS. I guess the boot loader is Grub because Ubuntu takes priority at Boot. I cannot persuade G Parted to allow me to resize the two different partitions. I am using the G Parted Live CD.

Apr 22, 2011I've resized partitions with some program - perhaps even gparted - but from Win7. partitions are indeed resized, but now I can't boot Win7, grub says:
"No such device found - No such partition found".
I tried to use some advices on similar problems I found here (like adding GRUB_PRELOAD_MODULES="part_msdos" to etc/default/grub and running grub-mkconfig after), but nothing helped. I guess I could restore win7 with installation dvd but I want to fix GRUB (and have both ubuntu 10.10 and win7)

General :: Multi Partition USB Key - Unable To Format Partitions / Sort It?
Feb 1, 2011I am trying to create a multi-partition USB key to use to kick multiple OS's whenever I need (1 NTFS partition for Windows image and data storage, one ext3 for boot, another ext3 for Linux distros iso storage and the last one as a Fedora live usb with permanent storage).
I am using a Kingston Data Traveler G2 16GB usb key and I have absolutely no problem to create the partitions and all looks fine. The problem I encounter is that although I can format the 1st partition on the usd key to any fs I want, I am unable to do the same on the other partitions. I tried fdisk+mkfs.XXX (ext2, ext3, fat, vfat, ntfs) and gparted, and no luck.
mkfs.XXX gives me no errors when I run it but when I try to mount the partition in Fedora 14 the OS is unable detect the fs. Gparted allows me to format the fs, gives no errors, shows a format successful message, but when it re-scans the device the fs appears as unknown.
I know it is possible to do this as I had a DataTraveler 101 16GB and it was working fine until I lost it.

I can move it around when I do an alt + mouse click, but the window is too big to view all of the options it contains. Sep 4, 2011I just installed Fedora 15 on a new laptop and I am using the Genome desktop. There are some applications that will not the allow you to resize the window. Some examples of this are Libre Calc, gnome-tweak-tool and a window in the package installer. In all these cases when you right mouse click on the top of the active window the "Resize ALT-F8" is grayed out and is not selectable.This is real problem when I'm trying to install the Perl-IDE-for-vim package because the list of dependencies is so long the confirm button is off the bottom of the screen and I cannot resize the window to get to it. There is also a similar issue with the tweak tool where some of the field are chopped off because the window is too small. As for Libre Calc I just don't like a window taking up the whole desktop.

The document opens in OpenOffice Writer but the logo is visible at the natural size only; as soon as I enlarge/reduce the picture, either by changing the view resolution or resizing the picture, it just disappears. It happens both in Edit mode and in Print PreviewI tried to export the graphic to a separate image but it did not work. There is a command Save graphics in the context-sensitive menu; it is undocumented either in the Customisation dialogue I used that command and the resulting image was blank. Copy/paste to GIMP via the X Clipboard gives the same blank result.

Feb 17, 2011I recently got new hard drives for more space and copied all my old drives onto this one (everything mirrored, no problems)The thing is, when I first setup my Ubuntu, I only allotted like 20GB because of space.Now that I have new hard drives, I wanted to give it more space, roughly double it to 50gb.The problem is, I am unable to resize it.I have booted into the Ubuntu Live CD, and started Gparted. I see all my stuff there, including the unallocated space next to my ubuntu partition (I left it so i could fill it when I expanded the partition)
The problem is, I am unable to make it larger. I right click, click on resize/move, but when I do, it just shows that I'm at my maximum size for that partition, I can only shrink it.so my question is, how in the world can I extend that partition into the unallocated space?I've tried formatting the unallocated space to ext3 to try and merge it, no success.I tried moving my ubuntu partition all the way to the right (end of the disk) so maybe I could extend it to the left, nothing
Ubuntu :: Unity - Unable To Resize Launcher Icons Or Set To Auto-hide
May 2, 2011I recently upgraded to 11.04 and I've been tweaking Unity to get the desktop just the way I like it. I've come across two minor problems though:
1. When I tweak the icon size settings in the Unity tab of CCSM, the icons do not change size; they remain at the default "48" setting regardless of what I type in.
2. When I set the Unity launcher to auto-hide (also in the Unity tab of CCSM), it stays at the default "dodge windows" setting.
Are there any workarounds to change these settings when tweaking them in CCSM's interface does not work? (Or is there some trick I don't know to get CCSM to work properly?)

Nov 9, 2010ive bought a new laptop, dell studio 17, and now ive wanted to install fedora 14 (64 bit), but after a few minutes the first problem appeard. Ive wanted to add the partitions and it always tells me that it "Could not allocate requested partitions: not enough free space on disks."
the funny thing is this, that my hard disk has got 500GB memory space and 150GB is full
EDIT: Win7 is running at the hard disk... could this be the problem?^^
