I have been using a little inexpensive Acer, mainly to retrieve e-mail and to browse the web. I normally work on a Mac platform ( I am a designer). A week ago the Acer took a dive from the counter top to the carpet. (not the first time). Since then (coincidence?) the mail function works fine, but the browser does not go on. What should I do?

View 3 Replies View RelatedUsing a Eee 900A netbook by Asus. By pressing Fn + F2, I can disable or enable the wireless chip on the netbook, a blue LED indicates the status. I've been able to connect to wireless networks just fine with this netbook. However, if the wireless chip ever becomes disabled, I have to reboot to get my network connection back. This generally happens when suspending. For some reason the LED will be off and I have to hit Fn + F2 for it to light up again.
However, after doing so, Linux will not reconnect to the network. It simply changes the wireless status from "wireless is disabled" to "device not ready". Even worse, I've recently had issues with the chip being enabled at boot, thus making it nearly impossible to get connected. I've searched around on-line but haven't found much of anything useful on this. This happens on all kinds of different distros including Ubuntu 9.10 Netbook, EeeBuntu 4 beta, Jolicloud and Ubuntu 10.04 Netbook.
So this is my first post so I'll put it in "Newbie".I seem to have successfully configged my httpd.conf file to listen on port 8008. I restarted httpd ok. However, when I go to port 8008 in a web browser from another computer on the internal network by going to 192.168.2.5:8008, it doesn't connect. When listening on port 80, I can browse to the IP address fine. is this a server-side or client-side issue? Using Fedora 12. Thanks in advance and tell me what forum this would best fit in.
View 11 Replies View RelatedInstalled Fedora 11 yesterday and was trying to use the Admin->Software Update but initially it complained about no connectivity (this is happening even though I was able to browse the web via FireFox!). So I went to Admin -> Services, and restart the Network Manager. It was then able to download about 250 updates. However, when I clicked on Install after the download, it says it was disconnected. When I went into Admin->Networking, I found out that the eth0 interface is Inactive. However, the Activate button is greyed out. I have been searching in the User Guide, the FAQ, the bugs section and have been unable to find out how to fix this. If I goto the command prompt, and typed in "ifconfig" I can also see that there is no IP and no packets transferred.

I am using Linux Mint 8 Helena x64 Edition on Dell Studio 15 laptop which has Dell 1520 Wireless-N Mini Card. It does work when I boot from Live CD of Helena, connect to a wired network and download & install the proprietary drivers when prompted. But on the installed system, I am unable to activate the Broadcom STA driver. I tried completely removing and then reinstalling bcmwl-kernel-source and dkms packages from package manager.When I go to Administration -> Hardware Drivers and click on Activate for Broadcom driver, at first there used to be a window which said Downloading and it used to go away after few seconds and nothing used to happen. Then I installed few updates. At the time of writing, I have installed all the available updates. Now after clicking on Activate, I get this error :

for over at week i have been trying to get my wireless card to work now. If i open Additional drivers, the non proprietary driver seems to be working and active. If i deactivate that and use the STA driver instead, it says active, but currently not in use. When i use the non proprietary driver, i can check mark on 'activate wireless', but nothing happens. When i use the STA driver there are no wireless options. I'm not sure if its important, but when i do "sudo lshw -C network" when the STA driver is active but not in use, the network status changes from 'disabled' to 'unclaimed'. When i came here, i tried to install "firmware-b43-lpphy-installer" as the sticky said i should, but the installation fails. It says my card is not supported: "Not supported card here (PCI id 14e4:4727)!"

I was running Fedora 13 on my old computer with a nvidia Geforce FX 5200 graphics card using the nvidia-173xx driver from fusion. After upgrading to Fedora 14 (the first day of its release) the X server wasn't working anymore, the screen just froze up after the progress bar. With Alt+F4 I "moved" to text mode and gave the startx command, but I got the fatal error message that there was no usable configuration detected. I deleted the xorg.conf file and afterwards I was able to start X again. I use the nouveau driver now, but it doesn't nearly work as good as the nvidia-173xx driver. I have it installed, but when I try to activate it (by running nvidia-xconfig as root) the X server doesn't work again after restart, and I have to do the same thing all over again.

I need to be able to connect to my home network, or hell any wireless network.I've tried using iwconfig wlan0 as well as the options in the Network Configuration panel as well as other related panels. I'm able to change and set up profiles for the wireless card, but not to activate them. The button just isn't clickable.If it helps, I'm running Security Spin from a unetbootin usb drive. The wireless card is identified by the system as "Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection" .

I'm trying to get the "root" user to be included in the list of users that get displayed on the login page.
I found this:[URL]...which seems to indicate that if I add an "Include" line, with the "root" user, that would work. I found the /etc/gdm/custom.conf file, which was empty except for the section header lines, so I added an "Include=root" line, but even after rebooting I just get the regular users, and have to login by typing the "root" username, etc.
So, I was wondering, is there a way to get this to work? P.S. I understand about not wanting to allow root logins, but I need to do this in my situation.
I've been using Thunderbird (2.0.0.24) with html attachments opening in Firefox.I just installed the new Chrome browser (5.0.375.70) and like it very much, enough so that I decided to switch from Firefox now that the Add-Ons I like are available for Chrome (Lastpass, Adblock, AutoPager). I've made Chrome the default browser in KDE's "Configure Desktop>Default Applications", but html attachments in Thunderbird still open in Firefox.I've tried most of the fixes offered on this and other forums as well as those offered by Mozilla's various help files, but nothing works. Most suggestions refer to fixes for 1.x versions of Thunderbird and no longer can be used.I just checked another OpenSUSE 11.2 PC with the newer 3.04 version of T'bird and saw no solution there either.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am new to Linux and decided on trying out Ubuntu. Love it so far. Running Ubuntu 64-bit 10.04 on a Toshiva Satellite L300. Network browsing worked fine to both my other machines (one running XP, the other Win7). The next day I switched the laptop on, the other two systems don't show automatically in the File Browser under Network like they used to. It now only shows a Windows Network icon which, when I click on it, gives the following error: Unable to mount location, Failed to retrieve share list from server. I can access the machines' shared folders perfectly through the terminal using smbclient.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI can't access any of the sub-folders or files in my home folder on Ubuntu. I've checked the folder associations, that doesn't seem to be the issue. I've also opened the mimeapps.list file and the inode/directory association seems fine - inode/directory=nautilus-folder-handler.desktop;
I'm running Intrepid (8.10) (please don't ask me to upgrade! ) and the issue started after using Qtpfsgui 1.9.3 a couple of time to create HDR images. I guess Qtpfsgui broke an association somewhere, but where? I can access other folders, on Computer and Filesystem, but not on my home folder.
