I have tried to install both wubi ubuntu and linux mint8 both times they start I see the new desktop briefly then I get a "no signal" flag on my display But I can hear the startup chime as the program finishes loading!
View 1 RepliesI just installed Ubuntu using Wubi and I am having problems with it. I am running an x58 Rampage II Gene with a radeon hd4850. I'm using a polaroid tlx-04240b hdtv for my monitor. After installing via wubi when I select ubuntu from grub I just get a blue screen that says no signal. I had the same problems before when I tried installing ubuntu and I finally gave up after messing with it for a while. Anyhow I finally started trying to figure it out again and I am brand new to linux so i really dont have a clue what to do here. I'm about 70% sure the problem is just the resolution being to high or the proper driver not installed but as i said I've never successfully used linux so i just dont know how to fix it.

Most things working fine but can get no sound with Movie player or other apps.
I am new to Linux, these type of forums and open source programs other than Firefox. I am not sure that this is the proper place to ask this question. I look forward to being able to leave MS but would like to have documents that I create viewable by the Windows Word programs.
I am using Linux Mint 8 as a dual boot setup with Vista on my Presario lap top. When I am operating with Mint8 and create a simple doc and save it as a word 2000 document and place it in a folder I can locate and open it using Mint 8 very nicely. But, when I try to access it using Vista and Word 2000 it does not appear in the folder when I try to view "all files". Conversely, Not all of the documents, which were created using windows and already exist in my folders, jpeg files for sure, are visible when I look in a folder using Mint8 and try to view "all files". I did add to a doc that was created by Vista/Word using Mint8 Open office and those edits were viewable using either Vista/Word 2000 or Mint8 open office.
I have reviewed the HowTo wiki on Setting up an SSL secured Webserver with CentOS [URL], and have successfully set up my server.
We are using the conditional <IfDefine SSL> tags around the <VirtualHost _default_:443> section. I wanted to do this because we are deploying a standard <VirtualHost> section that is appended to the httpd.conf file for several Apache versions on several OS's, and this makes maintenance much easier. Sometimes the server will be configured with SSL support, and sometimes not, depending on certain functions of our application that the end user will require and determine. Our application then determines which mode the server should be run in depending on these functions, what OS is being run, what version of Apache is being run, etc, and starts the httpd server in the appropriate mode. For CentOS 5 with Apache 2.2, if the application indicates SSL is required (and we expect the server to be configured appropriately), then we do the following:
/usr/sbin/apachectl -D SSL -k start
I just downloade and burned it. I booted off of it. It starts to load, but then the screen quits (no signal). Does Ubuntu not support S-Video? Then I tried another computer with a normal monitor connection (blue monitor plug). And it got further than the other computer. But then it hung up eventually too. My burn was successful. Is anyone else having problems with Ubuntu 64 bit edition? (installation)
View 9 Replies View Relatedi installed a program called start-up manager. i fiddled with the display settings cause on startup of the computer my boot screens and etc were out of wack placed halfway across the screen and really pixelated. after changing the resoloution i restarted and just after booting everything goes black and it comes up with the input signal is out of range. ive tried to run livecd or live usb i should say as its on a usb stick. and search for commands to repair my screen settings but cant. ive tried to run grub cause i heard its a repair console by pressing and holding shift it doesnt work ive tried to ctrl alt f2 and other commands during start up non of them work. they all just result in that message popping up.
there is no repair console for me to access during start up. i just want to roll back to before i did this when everything was working. also half the commands given on other threads come up with error messages saying commands were wrong and such. and ive also started up bios to try and change display settings for it to magically work so i can login and change my settings back and nothing happens. im using another computer at the moment to find results.
I followed the instructions given at http://linuxhub.net/2010/06/fix-big-and-ugly-plymouth-in-ubuntu-10-04-lucid-lynx/ for fixing my ugly plymouth screen after installing Nvidia drivers. All worked as expected. However I made some modifications in the instructions as I required.

when trying to startup Ubuntu 10.04 the screen goes blank and says no signal. But there are three Ubuntu's to chose from. the middle one will boot-up and works all right. But for when it is starting up the screen flashes and comes back on. the top one doesn't work at all screen goes blank but the lights on tower stay on.
the bottom one starts to boot but when it gets to the screen for your id and pass. it goes all blank but for a white line on the right side of the screen. this is on an old e-machine with a dual boot windows xp home. currently with 1g of ram and a 160gb hard drive split in two. with an AMD processor and ATI graphics on board. cant remember the numbers after that come after Ubuntu on the grub it is listed three times. how do you remove the other. let me know if you need more info.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI just installed ubuntu 10.04 on my laptop. everything was working fine until i installed firestarter. i didnt like it and uninstalled it. when i did that i lost my wireless signal icon at the top of the screen, firefox starts up in offline mode, and limewire says that network connection is lost. i just want it back the way it was before installing firestarter. please help, i dont want to reinstall ubuntu if i dont have to.

(somehow I knew that something is going to go wrong), and now my PC starts, works fine for a few seconds, then I get a black screen for a moment, and then my monitor starts acting like PC is off.Interestingly I think that otherwise everything is working just fine and that I just can't see anything due to the black screen (monitor is flashing like there is no signal coming from PC).

partition setup:
sda1 : primary : swap
sda2 : primary : ext3 : Kubuntu
sda3 : primary : ext3 : opensuse (flagged as bootable)
sda5 : logical
sda6 : logical
opensuses GRUB is primary and Kubuntus is chainloaded.
The problem occurred after I tried to boot kubuntu for the first time since I installed opensuse. Kubuntu didn't boot. so I probably set up chainloading wrong. No big deal, this I can fix.
The big problem was that after trying to boot Kubuntu no OS was marked as "Boot" in MBR. This is VERY strange. somehow the boot-flag is removed!
After setting the boot-flag (with a live-CD) everything works again. I can reproduce this.
I've tried to find answers but could'nt find any.
Is GRUB supposed to remove the boot-flag when chainloading? have I found a bug?
What does the mkdir -p flag do? i.e the '-p' part?

View 2 Replies View RelatedIn another forum (I each day visit a lot of them) a user was stating that you need to set a boot flag to make the root partition bootable, if you create partitions with GParted in order to install a Linux with GRUB2. Another was suggesting that, if you install Linux with GRUB2, the installer automatically sets a boot flag to the root partition to make it bootable (I don't remember the names). I neither believe the first nor the second thesis and I'm hoping that in this excellent forum some Gurus not only are saying I'm right but also give a comprehensive answer.

Also when I try to unmount from disk utility I get the following error: Error unmounting: umount exited with exit code 1: helper failed with: umount: only root can unmount UUID=10CDF36778638F73 from /windows Seemslike I need to rename the drive but it won't let me in disk utility.
My Problem is that within PYSDM (storage device manager) I uncheck Mount file system (sda4/windows) as a read only but it will not stay unchecked. I have unchecked it hit unmount and mount and it still is checked to mount as a read only. This is the code in options for sda4 in PYSDM (storage device manager) nls=utf8,umask=007,gid=46

I am using Rsync to backup files to a another machine, the users on my fileserver do not exist on the backup server so Rsync throws errors about the permissions. It copies the files fine but I want to get rid of the errors and have Rsync ignore the permissions when backing up.

I installed cygwin with rsync on a Win XP Machine. My goal is to backup a folder from one hard drive to another (both on XP machine).
I run the following command from a batch file:
Works fine except the --delete flag is not working. Copies everything in source to destination, but doesn't delete some extra files that are present on the destination, but aren't on the source, which it's supposed to. I looked at the rsync man page, and I'm doing everything right... such as not using wildcard.
The same command works perfect on another computer (XP machine; source and dest both on XP machine).

View 2 Replies View RelatedPC1 and PC2 are linux pc's with linux 2.4 (or) 2.6 kernel installed on it.Observations are done on both 2.4 kernel and 2.6 kernel Problem explination:
1)PC1 "ifconfig eth1 down" on linux shell.
2)Check the "ifconfig eth1" on PC2
3) The running flags are unset first(disappear)and set(Re-appear) on the eth1 interface on PC2.
4) unset and set toggling happens with in short period of time about 1 or 2 secs.
This is clearly observed in linux 2.4 kernel with some time delay for the toggling, but 2.6 kernel this will happen every quickly..

A friend of mine recently broke his laptop's screen. He knew I wanted to setup a small personal server so he gave it to me. I used an old monitor and wiped the HDD and installed Ubuntu. At the end I chose to upgrade the freshly installed OS. When I rebooted the computer after upgrading I couldn't get any images on the monitor. I tried to unplug/plug it several times but it doesn't work. I keep getting the "No signal" message on the screen.
Is there a way for me to somehow force the computer to use the secondary display? And if not is it possible to install and configure all the packages to run a VNC server on it without seeing anything?
Is there a flag or option to discard case sensitivity to find whether package is installed or not?

Iv'e tried on both CD & USB. Upon Live Boot from the CD I get the first purple screen, then "No Input Signal" on my monitor. Upon Live Boot from USB I've choosen both the Install & Boot options, then It thinks for a minute; and I recieve "No Input Signal". I'm leaning toward it being my "Graphics Card"(NOTHING IS WRONG WITH IT OR ANY OF MY HARDWARE!!!!; but it is an "ATI" ^_^), but thats just a guess.
