General :: Ubuntu 9.10 Stuck At Startup?

Jan 14, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 9.10 inside VMWare Workstation on Windows XP (Yo dawg... I put an OS inside yo OS), and when I rebooted my virtual machine tonight it happened that I couldn't reach the login screen. I've rebooted several times and after going through the usual boot sequence and showing me the boot progress bars, Ubuntu hangs at what should be the login screen with the "busy" cursor spinning round and round.

I can press CTRL+ALT+F1 to get to a console, however, and then I can login and use my computer normally (albeit without a GUI). The only thing I can think of that I've changed recently was I installed a new window manager, XMonad -- but I don't see how that could affect the login screen.

Ubuntu :: 10.10 Getting Stuck On Startup (not Always)

Jan 22, 2011

I installed Ubuntu 10.10 x64 on my Acer TimelineX 4820 TG, and everything was messy. I updated the bios, and it got a lot of things done but I still have a couple of problems:

1) Almost every time I boot my notebook, it gets stuck on the splash screen (I am using the open source graphics drivers), and it will get stuck 3-4 times and require manual restarts until I can login properly. Also, the applet icons get mixed up or lost on the upper gnome bar.

2) When I install the proprietary ATI drivers, my screen is not recognised (at least I think so), and I am stuck with a terminal and no graphics at all.

I am using Gnome desktop on Hardy Heron. My desktop nav bar (that normally is at the top) is stuck on the right. There are so many packed icons there is no place to grab the nav bar. I have removed several icons but I am getting down to the essentials. Is there an alternative way to move the nav bar that doesn't involve dragging it with my mouse pointer?

General :: Vim Stuck In Insert Mode

Apr 11, 2010

I've been using Vim for several months now via my web host (they allow putty access). All of a sudden, the escape key has become unresponsive. I cannot exist insert or any other mode by simply hitting escape. I have to hit F1 which brings up the help in vim and kicks me into command mode.

I'm most certain that my escape key on my keyboard is functioning fine since all of my windows shortcuts that use the escape key operate normally.

I know this is a ridiculous question and I'm certain there's a lot more to look into regarding a solution. What I really need is a solid lead as to where to start looking.

I'm using vim via putty I'm logging in using jailshell I'm not root

General :: Stuck On Converting Extensions Tar.gz To .tgz

Jan 18, 2010

I understand that .tar.gz and .tgz are equivalent to each other.

I did some checking as alway online. I am however stuck how to you make files with a tar.gz extenstion become .tgz. In the case of it being a compressed file is there a right and wrong way of doing this.

it seems that I always encounter things slightly off the beaten path, against my less then optimal knowledge of the man pages.

General :: Strace / Truss Sometimes 'fix' Stuck Processes - Why Is So?

Apr 23, 2010

Sometimes you have a stuck process that's been stuck for a while, and as soon as you go to poke at it with strace/truss just to see what's going on, it gets magically unstuck and continues to run! So from merely 'observing' these programs have some impact in the running of the stuck programs .. what's happening here? Did strace (I guess via ptrace(2)?) send a signal, causing the program to cease blocking, or such?

I've seen this several times -- most recently on Linux RHEL 4 (and a Perl script mucking with processes and doing some network IO in that case), but in a few other contexts as well. Unfortunately, I can't reproduce this, as it times to happen ... in times of crisis. But my curiosity remains.

General :: RT Process Stuck As Runnable 'R' / But Never Executes

Jul 28, 2011

I have a hard to reproduce (seen a couple times in a month) issue where my program seems like it is hung (not increasing in cputime), however, it is in the runnable state and never gets to run. The cpus are 99% idle according to vmstat and the load is 5 (which is equal to the number of threads in my program that are in the R state) according to ps, and there are no processes on the system in the 'D' state. The other major oddity is that one of the migration threads has a cputime usage almost equal to the uptime of the system. Typically migration threads have a cputime on the order of seconds across hundreds of days of uptime, but in this case the migration thread has DAYS of cputime according to ps.

The last time this happened, I went around saving as much /proc/X information that I could into logs for referring to later, before I had to reboot the box to get it running back to normal. (because in this state, a kill -9 is not heeded by my program)Does anyone have any idea what could cause this? I am not sure if this is a scheduling bug or a bug in my program (the likelier case).I have a wealth of logs to look through if anyone can suggest something specific to look for.

I'm also surprised that the [url] website had no option for Linux Mint 8 (Helena) and thus i had to follow instructions and do installations as per Linux Mint 5 or 6. I hope the Step 2 (Install Dependency Packages) has not adversely affected my Linux 8.

General :: Stuck On Join Command From Book?

Feb 10, 2011

Going through book, "Guide to UNIX Using Linux". I am doing one of the projects that has me writing scripts to join files. Here is my pnumname script and I am extracting the programmers names and numbers from the program file and redirecting the output to the file pnn. I then created a joinall script where I am trying to join the files pnn and pnumname and redirect the output to pactrep. When I run the script sh joinall and use less to display the contents of the redirected file pactrep, I get an error- join: extra operand `pnum'
Try `join --help' for more information.... I went to the man pages but I still (obvious) do not have a solid grasp.

General :: Stuck At Log In Screen With Mouse And Keyboard Not Functioning

Mar 26, 2011

I am COMPLETELY new to Linux.I started a computer class recently and I started teaching myself PERL.My teacher had mentioned to me that it's far better for some reasons (he did not elaborate) to write code in a Unix system. So I got Ubuntu 10.10.I installed it along side my windows 7.After I setup my windows (had to reformat the disk) I decided to boot up into Ubuntu to set that up. I installed the necessary drivers that it required, and the updates. I was asked to restart the system so I did so.

It did not even shut down or restart my system.I waited patiently 15 minutes...30 minutes 1 hour... until I finally decided to hit the reset button on my PC. Then when I'd boot back in to Ubuntu afterwards, it would stay at the log in screen and my mouse wouldn't budge and nor is my keyboard recognized by Ubuntu.Im really frustrated and I've been searching for answers for the whooole day and I just can't seem to find something well explained. Im completely new to Ubuntu so I don't know where to enter any code in a cmd line or such.

1)Reformatted my harddrive to install windows 7 on it
2)Set up windows 7 and then booted into Ubuntu.
3) Set up Ubuntu and installed necessary drivers and updates
4) Reset the computer and waited for an hour for the reset to happen but nothing happened.
5) Manually reset my pc and booted into ubuntu
6) Stuck at log in screen with mouse and keyboard not functioning (unable to use ubuntu).

General :: Fedora 14 - Stuck At Post Installation Process

Feb 7, 2011

I am pretty new to Linux OS's, but I have gone through the process of installing linux onto several of my system already. The problem I am having is when I attempt to install Fedora 14 onto my Unbuntu 10.10 (erasing Unbuntu to be specific) I am stuck at the Post-Installation process.
I am using a CD-RW to install Fedora onto my Ubuntu, and I installed Ubuntu onto the computer originally with another CD-R.

I assume this usually takes a few minutes, as the pop-up says that it may take several, but it has been several hours with no progress. I was pretty far into the installation when the pop up appeared, and it said:
"Post-Installation: Performing post-installation filesystem changes. This may take several minutes.".
As I said, it has been several hours.

General :: Thinstation Bootable Cd Stuck At 'Booting Kernel'

Jan 14, 2011

First off im very new to linux and have only been involved with linux for a couple days. Anyways, let me explain what i'm attempting todo. I want to make a DVD to automatically restore a partition without any human interaction other than inserting the dvd and turning the pc on. I'm using norton ghost 11.5 to restore the image and im using thinstation 2.2 as my OS.I have a cd that will boot up thinstation but then i would have to type in a command to have ghost start restoring the partition. so basically i figured i would put a script in the etc/init.d folder of initrd. so i extracted the contents of initrd using 7zip, put the script in the directory and then compressed initrd into .gz format. however now when i put the newly made dvd in i get stuck at "Booting the Kernel."

is this a problem with initrd format? if so what format does it need to be in and how to i get it into that format?is there some way to set the parameters of the kernel to fix this problem? and if so how do i go about doing that?

General :: Resize2fs Seems Stuck At Pass 3 (scanning Inode Table)?

Jun 16, 2011

I have a machine running Arch Linux (2010, I believe) with a 6TB RAID-5 array hooked up to a Highpoint RocketRaid 2320. I've been having issues with the RAID controller's drivers and the latest Linux kernels thanks to the driver not being open-source, and as a result I am migrating the system to Windows Server.Problem is that the 6TB disk originally was comprised only of an ext4 partition.I shrunk the partition down as much as I could, and added a NTFS partition in the empty space so I could start moving files. That went fine. Problem is that now I need to shrink the ext4 partition again, move files, shrink again, etc. The second run through resize2fs is taking way longer than the first pass.It seems to be getting stuck at pass 3:

[root@nar-shaddaa rc.d]# resize2fs -p /dev/sdb3 863000000
resize2fs 1.41.14 (22-Dec-2010)
Resizing the filesystem on /dev/sdb3 to 863000000 (4k) blocks.

General :: Script Run At Startup Does Not Work Under Ubuntu 10.04 LTS

Apr 29, 2011

I've got a script than ran fine under Ubuntu 7.10 but I'm having a problem with it under Ubuntu 10.04 LTS. The script runs fine when executed via sudo. The script is in /etc/init.d, it's executable, I registered it with update-rc.d, and (according to ps) it's running. It just doesn't work.

Here's the script:
#!/bin/bash
cd /home/xxxx
while [ true ]; do
kermit -q <pc.kcs
sleep 5
done

kermit is installed and runs properly, the directory /home/xxxx exists, the file pc.kcs exists (remember: the script runs when executed via sudo).

I dont think its very safe to cut the power from the computer through the power button :/ I realize there are other posts regarding this, and I apologize if this is against the rules, I just thought maybe it would be appropriate to start a thread with this problem for 10.10 users

General :: Mouse Button Gets "stuck" Down In VMWare Guest OS?

Jun 23, 2010

I'm using 64-bit Fedora 13 on 64-bit VMWare Workstation 7.1 (on Windows 7 Pro) and I'm having an issue with the mouse button. Everything works just fine unless I click and drag off the guest OS window (which accidentally happens more often than you'd think). When I do this, the "button" gets stuck in the down position and there's no undoing it. Resetting the session does not fix the issue - I have to reboot the VM. I do not have any accessibility features turned on.

Obviously, this is kind of a pain. Does anyone know of a solution?

General :: Ubuntu - Create Several Screen Sessions On Startup?

How do I create several detached screen sessions on startup? screen -A -m -d -S test ./script.sh seems like it should work but using it in a script started by cron doesn't show any screen sessions running after booting.

It looks like the screen session is closed after the command finishes executing, can I keep it open so I can see the output?
