General :: Trying To Desktop Using VNC / Getting Different Screen

I have a SUSE desktop Linux system running. Now when I am trying to vnc into that system from a VNC client (from a Windows XP box), all I get is a blank desktop with a XTerm running on it. My SUSE desktop had loads of apps and terminals running -- can't see any of them. Any idea what might be going wrong here?I had earlier invoked vncserver on my SUSE desktop as "vncserver" and no options. Maybe I need additional options to make the desktop visible? Or maybe tweak vnc script or xinitrc files, not sure.
Is there a free screen sharing app for linux ? I'm not talking about controling a desktop from remote, but simply viewing someone else's screen, quite useful for a teleconference.
The newest version of Skype has a "share screen" feature that uses its webcam channel, it's not bad but the picture quality is rather low so it's actually difficult to the see the details... and actually it's impossible to read text... Also, it's only on the windows version.
I recently found mikogo which seems really nice but again, only for windows or mac
I've already installed x11vnc and have it running well on my laptop upstairs. I can access my existing desktop session with no real problems, it works great. The problem I'm running into is the fact that I'm accessing my computer upstairs which is driving two 1920x1080 monitors, accessing it by VNC on my 1280x800 laptop (meaning I have to scroll a 3840x1080 desktop on my 1280x800 screen. I've looked into running multiple VNC screens, but this doesn't seem to be the best solution, and I don't know if I can do this with x11vnc. I know that I can run native VNC screens at different geometries, but I don't think that this helps much, as each VNC screen is essentially a new session running basically nothing.
A while back in my sys-admin days, I remember having to set up a desktop environment on a Fedora machine. What was cool was that each VNC screen I created launched the default desktop environment. It "just worked," no fuss. Mind you, it wasn't the same desktop on each screen, but it worked.
whenever i open my kubuntu desktop it brings a black screen. the pointer of the mouse is active but i cannot see anything.but my gnome desktop works well.what might be wrong?
I was in the middle of deleting the Xine movie player, and clicked a box wrong. I lost everything possible on the graphical desktop as well as a log in screen for Ubuntu 9.10 (karmic). Since then I did a few things:1. apt-get install ubuntu-desktop2. apt-get install kubuntu-desktop3. apt-get remove kubuntu-desktopAfter all this, I still have the login screen for Kubuntu. But I don't want that. I want to get back to the Ubuntu login screen, and the orange colored desktop. Right now -- after I log in -- I only have a terminal to use. And I have the blue background of Kubuntu. What do I need to do to get rid of the Kubuntu graphics and back to my original login screen, plus the Ubuntu (karmic) graphics and toolbars / menus?
So I updated my software using Yast. One of the updates failed to install. I rebooted and then was in black screen hell with the following information:

I just put on my Linux PC now and after booting logging into the user a/c, it just gives a blank screen with the desktop wallpaper - no menu's or anything, so there's pretty much nothing I can do. I know I had removed the menu and replaced it with the dock (awn dock or something).
However, I can log in as root and root works fine (so I'm doing the update at the moment).
Coming back to my question, I used to know an Ubuntu command which I put in as sudo (terminal)and it used to work like a magic command which would literally restore and repair my linux installation - I even used it when I bought a new system and transferred my linux hard drive from my previous machine to the new one and this one command actually setup and prepared my linux installation to work smoothly in my new PC - just one command after connecting my h/drive in the new PC.
I have just noticed a nice feature in Windows 7 - when you drag a window to the edge of the screen (the mouse pointer must touch the edge), windows offers you to resize the window to exactly half of the screen size. This is actually very handy on the wide screen monitors.
Is it possible (and how) to configure Kde 4 to do the same thing?
I am very happy with Ubuntu 10.04 that I downloaded, burnt to CD and installed (I am a newbie to Linux), but I am finding a little problem on an old Sony lap-top, with a rather old-fashioned almost square screen.The top bar of any screen image is just off the top, and I can only see a quarter of it, which makes using the max/min and cancel buttons a bit hard to use. I know I can resize the screen, but it goes back to the original next time it is used. Is there a permanent fix?
I downloaded ubuntu and installed it on one of my hard drives, it worked fine until I changed the settings for the screen resolution and updated all driver.Now when i load it up the desktop comes off the screen, its about 10% off each side, the mouse goes off and i can click the task bars but i cant get them to come back on screen.When i change the screen resolution all it does is make everything bigger and the desktop still goes off screen
When I boot into debian, the desktop is not correctly centered on the monitor. It is NOT my resolution settings. I put together a little computer recently to hook to a TV.The problem I'm having is that when I start the computer up and get to the desktop... the desktop is off the edges of the screen. I checked the resolution and it's 1920x1080.I can't see the panels my applications menu, as they're both off the edge of the screen. Is there anything that can be done to correct this? Also, the TV has no settings to correct this problem.
The computer was working fine last night, when I woke up this morning (I leave it on) it was making strange noises through the speakers and I had a blank screen, restarted a few times had some page full of code and wouldn't move on from there, I went out came back started it up and it did everything normally except instead of a desktop I had a black screen, however strangely enough when I press the power button on the PC a shut down menu comes up, and the mouse works and I can select from the options. I am on an Nvidia ION tho. How do I boot into a safe mode as such? as at the moment I'm using a ubuntu live CD to read the forums!
On the GRUB menu, seclect "Ubuntu (recovery mode)" (not exact wording). You'll get scrolling boot messages until you get to a screen with a grey box and some options. Use the arrow keys to select "x failsafe graphics mode" or something of the like. Press enter and you'll probably get a message that your card can't be detected or something. Press okay and continue. Your screen will be messed up, but you'll be in. It probably isn't the same problem, as you don't have an ATI card and can see a shutdown menu, but good Luck!
How do you bring up the GRUB menu? My PC isnt dual booted so I never see any menus at all, I thought all I had to do was press F8 during boot up? No, F8 is Windows. Hold down shift when booting to see the menu. Downloaded & Installed the 10.6 driver and everything is working fine. Unminimizing apps works much faster with this driver . Right now I've tried what "jxtreme" suggested on quote nr2 however when I go into recovery mode I get a load of code scrolling through the screen as its supposed to but I never get any box with options as he says, it just gets to a point where there's a small white cursor flashing at me half way down the screen and it stays there...
I have just loaded Ubuntu 10.04 onto a hard drive and then booted using my laptop and it boots all fine and I get to the desktop. After I get to the desktop in around 10-20 seconds the screen suddenly goes black and the mouse disappears and I can't do anything. The fan still goes but thats about it, I have to hard shut down and load up again but it just keeps happening. Not sure what to do next?

I have plugged my laptop into an hd-tv via but the desktop screen is slightly off to the left so the show desktop button etc is missing, the tv menu allows me to move the desktop over a bit but not quite enough, is there a way of moving the desktop position in ubuntu/software?
My problem is about 10% of my desktop is off screen. So I cant see my task bars but they are there. If i move my mouse pointer all the way up and off screen and click, the menu will drop down into view but I can't see the task bars. The desktop displays bigger than what the screen is. Adjusting the resolution just makes the icons bigger but does not fix the problem. Is this a video card incapatablity maybe? Running ati x1650 pro. I am also using Hdtvs for monitors. Tried sony bravia 32 inch and hitachi plazma 42 inch. Svideo and dve to hdmi cables. both tvs and cables have the same problem.
a server at work has been accessed through the desktop environment as root. I know this is a risk and since I have never done it before I was wondering if there are any files created by the desktop that could compromise the system and how could I clean it up.
Is there a way in SuSE 11.1 to have the conventional desktop, instead the plasma desktop? I thought that installing KDE 3.5 will fix it, but I was wrong. I really don't want to download back SuSE 11.0, just to have my old desktop layout. SuSE developers should at least leave it as an option than to force people to install it
I am running openSUSE 11.2 GNOME on a Toshiba P3 laptop. Lately after logging in all I see is a green desktop without any icons or even the taskbar at the bottom. I have to reboot and choose the fail-safe boot option, logout then log back in. This is a very annoying and recurring problem
I just upgraded to OpenSuse 1.4 from 1.1 and it boots straight to the command lines. After login I type startx and it still does not go to the KDE desktop or anywhere else fo that matter. how to get to a GUI desktop from the commandline screen?
Trying to install the driver for my intel chipset graphics, I edited my xorg.conf and probably did something wrong. Because everytime I log in, desktop icons appear very big, because of the low screen resolution. I fixed and set the screen resolution to normal scale for my display, but when I reboot, the screen resolution returns to its original scale with big desktop icons irritating me.
What desktop screen recorders are there? I've tried Istanbul and gtk, and they didn't work on my computer. The other problem is they don't output into a format that can be used on other platforms. At the moment, I need to use BSR in the Windows side of my computer.
I'm setting up Lucid for a friend and I've come across a strange problem - the desktop is bigger than the screen. The laptop is a Fujitsu Amilo Pro V2035 with a VIA S3G Unichrome graphics adapter. The desktop resoltion is 1600 ish - but the actual screen size is 1280x800. I've tried changing this in the Display settings but this results in an unreadable screen (refresh settings at a guess).
In ubuntu 10.04 I have compiz installed and when I try to rotate the cube or simply change desktops screen goes black but not entirely, I mean I can still see the cube. This happens only during the change of desktops. Its very annoying,it doesn't create trouble but I cant see the cube effect.
I installed the latest KDE desktop on my Ubuntu 10.04 system. When I switched to KDE the screen ends up black with no access to anything. I reboot but don't have access to the session manager on the ubuntu login screen so I can't get back into my Ubuntu desktop. I just installed ubuntu 10.10 for the first time. Gnome desktop is bigger than my screen. when i see The top panel, the bottom panel is out of screen. How I can fix it ?. i did try to adjust the screen resolution but din't work
Although I have been using Ubuntu for a while, I am still a beginner.This is the second time that it has happened to me and I am unable to find a possible solution in my books on Linux and Ubuntu.Twice I have downloaded updates from Update Manager which required a reboot. Each time I have rebooted,terminal window has opened. I am unable to get out of terminal to the desktop or to enter any other program ( like office,etc).
