View 1 RepliesRecently upgraded Ubuntu home server from 8.04 client to 10.04 server and reinstalled all services therein. One of them is a Netatalk daemon that I configured in a fashion similar to this website:[URL]inder recognizes my server and the afp service, yet when I attempt to log in (using valid credentials), Finder indicates its the wrong username and password. I've tried altering some of the config files and my Google-fu to look for solutions
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am a user of version 2006 of Mandriva server and now I am upgrading to MES5. According to support, netatalk is no longer support by this version (at least in Brasil), and I still have some old Macs running System 9.2 and it is very important to have netatalk running at server. I download netatalk and followed the intructions showed at:[URl]...
I was able to follow the instruciont until step 5, executing ./bootstrap. Next, I should execute the next command: ./configure, but I got the message No such file or directory. There is no REAME file at the directory and the only configure file it has is configure.in, a 40kb file, plain text document, its first line says dnl configure.in for netatalk.
I'm new here and I didn't really use linux before. My problem is, there was an admin at the company. I rename it's username and add a new password to it. The Linux fileserver uses Samba. I have an XP PC, which was the admin's mentioned above, and it can't access to the fileserver since I rename the admin's username and password. Can it be the problem, that I did it in graphic mode, not in console? I did it with smbpasswd too, but it isn't working. Do I need to write something in the smb.conf file or something? If I miss to write down something important please ask, but don't swear at me.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am upgrading my linux server to Mandriva MES 5 server. Although its working fine (I can copy/delete/execute files from/to linux server), at mac workstation, at chooser, when I click on appletalk icon nothing happens. I have to click on Server IP address button and type my server IP, which is 192.168.0.123. Its is annoying and time consuming. I have to do this every time I want to access my server. At previously version, after I click on appletalk icon (at chooser), the server name comes up right away.

I upgraded to Netatalk 2.2 and I've hit a wall.
I'm authenticating netatalk with an external LDAP server but for some reason pam is confused.

I went searching for system-auth but it doesn't exist.
I would like to use my SuSE 11.2 1TB RAID server to backup my mac using time machine. I found several tutorials on the web for using netatalk over ssh, but all these tutorials are for Ubuntu and require the debian package. Has anybody compiled netatalk over ssh under SuSE? I cannot verify if the netatalk package installed by the SuSE installer has been compiled with this option. Alternatively could somebody point me to any documentation to help me compile netatalk? I tried reading the netatalk manual from sourceforge, but that asks for installation of a Berkley DB that is not required under Ubuntu.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI blindly upgraded my Mac OS X machine to Apple's newest OS version: 10.7 Lion. Unfortunately they upgraded their AFP implementation in such a way that now I cannot connect to my opensuse 11.4 box. However, that is quite essential for my TimeMachine backup to run over the network. Also, I can't quite go back to using samba for this because then timemachine will corrupt its own backup after a while. I tried NFS once, but that went a little over my head.
After a some googling, I came accross this blog that suggested a solution. I followed those steps, and behold I was even able to get the whole netatalk 2.2-beta4 thing to build correctly. However I couldn't get the afpd to run properly, since
Code: /etc/init.d/netatalk start did not seem to start the daemon in such a way that it actually opened a port (well, the latter is just a guess - os x told me it couldn't connect to the specified server, rather than that the server version was incorrect) Log-files didn't provide anything useful, and essentially I'd prefer it if I could install v2.2 via yast, rather than leaving traces of improperly configurated software all over my system.
The default OSS repository contains Netatalk 2.0.3. I need version 2.2. I've also been looking around the buildservice, but all i could find was a bunch of failed projects...
I have been using netatalk to use my old LaserWriter PS 4/600 with Kubuntu.verything was fine until I upgraded to Lucid. Now, when I go to restart netatalk, I get

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am having trouble with netatalk after rolling out 11.4 on my home server. I am using the same conf files from my previous 11.3 setup. I use netatalk for my macs as it tends to work better than samba.
I can access the afp volumes if I enter the full unc in finder (afp://server/data). The problem is that if I try to browse to the server via finder (click on the server icon) I get a connection fail. With 11.3 this would simply list out all available volumes.
I'm trying to upgrade netatalk to the latest version because my Time Machine gets corrupted when the volume reaches its max capacity. How do I do it? I uninstalled netatalk, downloaded the latest package, made configure, make, make install (without any errors, just some warnings), but netatalk doesn't seem to run. I can't connect to the shares. If I install netatalk 2.1.2 via synaptic everything starts to work again. How to upgrade netatalk to the latest version on ubuntu 10.10?

Okay, I've been using openSUSE on and off since version 10.0. I have enjoyed it quite a bit. It still hasn't taken over as my main OS, but I have installed 11.3 on my netbook and it is the primary there.
Here's the issue though. I have recently acquired an older HP fileserver. It has a 1ghz PIII, 756mb ram, three SCSI hard drives, as well as a tape drive back up. All in working condition. The motherboard is even a dual socket (multi-processor) motherboard, and I can get a matching processor for around $20 - $30.
I would like to turn this into a server of some sort that I can use at the house to share photos/music/documents/movies etc. Now, I am assuming that if I was using linux completely for all the computers in the house it would be easier to network all this. However, this is not a reality. My wife's computer uses XP Home and this is what she wants. My desktop dual boots Win 7 Ultimate and openSUSE 11.3, and the netbook dual boots XP Home and openSUSE 11.3.
How would you go about setting up the HP as a server. I plan on adding a couple of 500GB hard drives for the storage and possibly purchasing the second processor. I have a linksys router, a zyxel wireless router (set up as a wireless switch) and a 5 port workgroup switch. So attaching everything should fairly simple.
I would like to make a small NFS server for a small LAN. Normally, I would build a dedicated cheap and cheerful linux box to do this. However, I was wondering if all of this could be done more easily using a commodity standalone device like e.g. "NetGear ReadyNAS Duo NAS". I presume devices like this run their own proprietary OSes, and I would prefer instead an opensource OS based device. I do like the look of these devices as they seem simple and small.
So my real question: What would linuxers advise for me given that I want a minimalistic NFS fileserver? I can make my own dedicated linux desktop machine. However, is a standalone device similar to the above, but running something like FreeNAS, also an option?
I'm using tigthvnc server on linux machine. Often my clients are closing their vncviewrs from close button ('X'), and not exiting gracefully their sessions from OS. How can I terminate the server when they do that?

nmap is showing a port as closed. I have the firewall stopped on both hosts. It shows as closed on localhost as well. The process that's listening to that port is not started from xinetd so i doubt hosts.allow/deny is the issue.I can't help but feel that I'm forgetting some other access control mechanism. Both hosts are RHEl5.4

Shortly after upgrading to Meerkat I discovered that my macbook timemachine backups became unreliable to the point of uselessness. After a bit of googling it appears that Meerkat's version of Netatalk (2.1.2) has some issues that bust timemachine. These issues are supposedly fixed in version 2.1.3. So... what is the best way for me to go about upgrading Netatalk past the official Meerkat release version?
The Netatalk project is at version 2.1.5. I could uninstall the Meerkat packages and just try to build Netatalk directly from source. However I'm a little leary about losing all of my existing AFPD filesystem meta-data. The Natty Narwhal repository appears to have version 2.1.4 which I've read should solve my problem. Is there any way to install the binaries from the Natty repositories? Can I download the source package from the Natty repositories and rebuild the package with Meerkat libraries/dependencies?
I have a computer on my LAN that I'm using as a file server for my photography work. What I'm wanting to do is allow my business partner be able to access the file server from his home over the internet. I'd also like to create a share folder on each of our computers so that we can each access and modify so we can sync our work easily without being in the same office. What would be the easiest way to do this and how exactly do you access another person's computer over the internet?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have ubuntu lucid lynx server running on an old eMachine as a fileserver. It has a big (2TB) slow (10-20 MB/s) external drive (ntfs-3g), and a small (20G) fast (60 MB/s) internal drive (ext3).
Using smbfs and vsftpd and sshd, all my data lives on the big drive and I'll see dramatic speed differences between the drives.
I'm wondering, is there a way to things up so that the external drive uses a cache on the internal drive to speed things up?
For example ... ftpd takes data from a client, and instead of slowly writing it directly to the external drive, it is written first (and quickly) to the internal drive, then, later, it is written to the external drive?
i am taking another stab at this. The last time i attempted it, it seemed like everyone had a different way to do it, but nobody could give me an answer on how to do it...
I currently have a Domain Controller Running sme server and a domain controller, using ldap as a backend. I have two file servers runing ubuntu 10.04. My overall goal is to have it so when i create a username on the domain controller, it is then automatically copied over to the fileservers. This way everyone will have their own username and password to access the fileservers and ill be able to track what people do on the fileservers.
The next necessity is for me to be able to apply permissions to the folders on the fileserver based on the users that are created on the domain controller.
I can't mount windows share from our domain.
I tried:
mount -t cifs -o username=user@domain,password=secret //fileserver1/somefolder/someuser /mnt/win
... with no luck " wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock etc"
I tried various combinations, including
mount -t cifs //fileserver1/somefolder/someuser /mnt/win
... just to make sure and still the same " wrong fs type, bad option, bad superblock etc" message. Of course /mnt/win does exist and I'm root.
Am at wits end... is there something special to do in Centos for this to work?
In my case, it occurs intermittently when trying to connect using putty's command line client 'plink.exe' to a linux machine using ssh. For some testing purposes, a linux server is setup with 8K virtual ip addresses and the testing scripts will connect to these ip addresses through ssh using plink.exe. There will be concurrently 25 ssh sessions launched to the server. While it works for sometimes, it throws 'server unexpectedly closed network connection' error intermittently. If the same ip address is tried again manually, it works. While the ssh server is accepting connections, this error is thrown sometimes and unable to find out the reason from the logs. It is not that the ssh connection is completely blocked. It gives this error message while connecting to some of the virtual ip addresses but works some times.
The hosts.deny, sshd_config are tuned to allow the connections, allow more sessions etc.
I think I can do it by brute force with a crontab entry for each of the 15 days at a time, but I'm not even sure I know how to do that.I'm trying to automate a process I do manually every day. That is, I execute the same command every day for 15 days running, manually changing the filename of the file by 1 each time, i.e. file.1.dmp, file.2.dmpThen after I reach the end of 15 days, I start again changing the filename being written back to the name of the first file I created 15 days ago. This overwrites the 15 files one a day for 15 days. That is, after I create the file.15.dmp, I (manually) change the name of the file being created back to file.1.dmp again.
I realize that this may not be descriptive enough to help me with getting an answer. I don't know how else to explain it. I'd be more than glad to fill in any details I've missed.I've thought about using a for loop, but it's been so long since I've had to do any programming I hesitate to go down that path. I've though about using the current date variable to change the filename, but how do I reset the script to start again after 15 days? The point of my exercise is to have a rolling backup/dump file for 15 days that I can restore from if needed.
