I have configured samba server.My requirement was that the path which i have to share was /srv/www/htdocs.With this the shared path for developer user was /srv/www/htdocs/projects.
So in the smb.conf file i made the entries as following:
After that root user was able login to both /srv/www/htdocs and also project folder and developer was only able to login to projects folder.That was according to my requirement but now the problem is that when developer is trying to edit any file in projects folder he is getting error that you dont have permissions to change this file.But developer should be able to edit any files. What changes i need to do now.

I have created a samba share and mounted the share with /etc/fstab on another machine. This share is supposed to be a fully public share i.e. i have different share where different permissions are set but on this particular share i intend to have full read write and execute rights to all the users on my mounting machine.
The problem is that I get only owner and group rights for write on directories that i create due to which all my users can create files in my mount directory but when they create a folder they cannot create any file inside that folder.

I have a server at home running as a file server and DHCP connected to a switch with a wireless AP in there as-well. with this setup I can access the files and do some configurations via SSH on the actual server anytime I'm able to get the wireless signal, now lately I felt the need to be able to do the same but this time over the internet. I've read somewhere already that I'm gonna need a router with port forwarding and NAT, then know the IP address of the server but my problem is once you start talking about routers then you need broadband connection which is something I don't have. Getting a router is not much of a problem but without ADSL like connection I guess its useless, what do I need to do?

I would like to know how can I get permission to subdirectories of a share other than what main share has. I do not want them to have same share I mean for example I share "sharetest" and it has full access for A and B and C groups but "sharetest/foo1" has read only access for A group and "sharetest/foo2" has read only access for B group and "sharetest/foo3" has read only access for all of them.

I recently started using SVN with Apache for my web development, although I find it really annoying that I have to issue two SVN commands (one local, one remote) to update my web site. I have been looking into SVN post-commit hooks to solve this problem. The only problem is that apache does not have permission to modify files in my user directory... So here is how everything is setup. I am running Slackware 13 full install. There have been no installations overriding any of the default installs.

I have a LAN of about 70 computers that I would like to share media files between. I have gotten to the point with Samba that I can view the files without a username/password from client PC's. I would like to make all the folders read only except for one which will be writable for everyone. The thing that I am having a hard time with is allowing a couple of administrators (on Windows 7 machines) read/write access for all files/folders. I am completely new to Ubuntu and Samba so please make explanations thorough. Here is /etc/samba/smb.conf file:

I have a Samba server on a computer. I would like to backup the Samba files on a different computer that is a client in the Samba server network. I can easily drag and drop the Samba files onto the client. I would like to automate this process, and accomplish this using an update copy versus a copy full. How can I accomplish this as bash script? I had no luck using the 'cp' command.

I can go to Places-Network on the gnome menu and pick the share I have on my other machine (I have read-write since the account is in the same user name) I can browse the files on the server using Nautilus, however when I try to open OpenOffice files it fails and won't open them. I have to manually mount the files system as cifs before I can open OpenOffice files. Anybody know why this is happening.

I have installed samba server one month ago and it was working fine till yesterday but today morning when any network client is trying to access samba shared files by giving smb://<serveripaddress> it is asking for password...that is ok but when he is giving the password it is again opening the same password window to enter password again.The clients are giving correct password that is confirm. At the server side i have run smbclient -L localhost -U% and that is giving proper response so that also means that samba server is working fine so i dont know what could be the problem and what its solution.

I have recently installed Fedora F11 with a Samba server. The smb.conf seems fine but I cannot see any of the files in the share from a Windows machine. I am probably missing something unbelievably simple but driving me nuts!
I can see the machine and share from windows
When logged in as the user fred I can see all the files in Linux - most are owed by fred.
smbuser:
Code:
# x_name = SMB_name1 SMB_name2 ...
root = administrator admin
nobody = guest pcguest smbguest
fred = fred
smb.conf:
Code:
[global]
workgroup = Workgroup
server string = Samba Server Version %v
netbios name = MachineName
hosts allow = 127. 192.168.0.
.........
[Docs]
comment = Main Documents
path = /mnt/documents
read only = no
browseable = yes
valid users = fred
.........
The other thing I find a bit odd is that
Code:
service smb restart
does not effect the way that the windows machine sees Samba. It appears that you need a full restart to get the changes to show properly.
Thanks,
Michael

Is it possible to recover files on a samba server running opensuse 11.0? I had been dual-booting into XP and Opensuse 11.2. XP failed (system files corrupted) and ceased to boot. After re-installing XP into its partition and trying to repair Grub so that I wouldn't have to re-install Opensuse again, I had partition table errors. I wiped the hard drive since I had a backup of my home directory on a DVD. The problem is that once I installed both OSs again and copied the contents of the DVD to the home directory, all the files in my home directory were read-only. Among these was a directory where my documents folder on the samba server is mounted into. The documents on the samba server are no longer there. I thought it was mounting wrong, but when I used ssh to log into the other machine to check, they were in fact gone. Is it possible to recover these? I've looked in the .trash* folders on both machines with no luck. A lot of my research was on the samba server. I typically use Knode to check this, but it crashes while its files are having permission problems as well that I haven't been able to remedy yet.

We have started using ACLs on our fileserver and we are having a problem with getting Samba to behave correctly. When we create a file in Linux, the permissions and ACLs are set correctly. Files are set to 640 and directories are set to 750. However, when we create it in Windows through Samba, regular files are being set with 650 and directories are set to 770. It's adding execute on files and execute+write to directories for groups.
