I am accessing network drive (Z:stream) on windows. Now the permission set on stream folder is like chmod -R 777 streams/ means all the files inside stream is at 777 but now i am copying some files from windows to this streams folder but permission on those files are not 777 ,i would like to have permission 777 on those files that copied from windows ...how do i do that??

The list of servers for this workgroup is not currently available
Another strange thing is that if I set the workgroup to EXAMPLE in smb.conf, the workgroup shows up as Example on my windows clients.
I'm on OS X and mount a network share from my Windows XP machine. Files by default have the rwx (700) permissions. What OS X option I need to change, that the files will have rw (600) permission?
Maybe this question also applies for Linux mounting a Windows network share.
I am trying to set up a windows file server using fedora 14 with samba. when I go to the a windows machine I can log in the the samba server. When I try to go to the folder I need access to I get and error saying "you might not have permission to use this network resource" I am trying to access my home directory. Directory /home/mike, username mike. As far as I can tell it is not a permission of the directory. I have a user set up in samba that uses the mike user account.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI want to use samba for file sharing like on a Windows home network. Actually they are all Linux machines but nfs is too complicated. On my host machine I installed samba and system-config-samba. I created a new share for /home, check marked writable and visible and put access to everybody. For preferences-->server settings--> security the "authentication mode" is set to user, encrypt passwords is no, and guest account is no guest account. Under preferences-->samba users I added myself as a user with the same windows user name as my Linux user name and the same password.
My client is a virtualbox fedora (used for testing purposes but actual clients will be real computers on my home network). I entered the address smb://192.168.1.184. When asked for the user name and password I put my regular user name and password since that was what I set in samba users. However, the password dialog keeps coming up and won't let met into my own computer. If I quit it says something like access is denied. How can I get my home network back? I liked this feature when my home computers ran XP but I switched them to Fedora 12.
I used Samba to setup a Linux network drive in Windows. Is there anyway to do it vise versa?

What are the possible problem when Windows access the file from Ubuntu got Read Only even though have a full permission to read, write and execute the file? Ubuntu to Ubuntu accessing the file there is no problem only Windows got a problem.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have set up RHEL 5 file server with Winbind and samba services running.I am able to assign and authenticate windows XP users against my RHEL 5 server.No issues.But one or two of my users are using Windows 7 Ultimate edition and they are not able to access my network samba shares.I can view the shares in windows 7 box but trying to access gives me "network access denied error".But i can access the same share in Windows xp machine for the above tested users.Working great but not in windows 7 box.I haven't tested with Vista OS yet.

I want to setup a Linux File Server for a small windows network (around 50 users). I do know that I am gona need Smb service/pkg for that. I haven't used Samba for a while now and as per the best of my knowledge, entire communication (including usernames and passwords) between a samba server & windows client machines will be plain text. Is there any way to secure all this communication??
Secondly, if i remember correctly, MS windows wont let me mount more than one samba shares as network disk when all my shares can be accessed by different smb users with different passwords?? is there a solution to this problem? OR may be if there is any other package available for this purpose so that i wont have to use samba?
On Windows 7, I have VirtualBox running Linux (Ubuntu 8.04), with Samba set up so that the Windows host can access it. But if the virtual machine is shut down & restored, or rebooted, the Windows Network no longer shows it. I've tried refreshing many times, restarting Samba, disabling/enabling the virtual network adapter, and running the succession of commands ipconfig /release, ipconfig /flushdns, & ipconfig /renew, but none worked. As a last resort I could restart the host itself, but is there a better way?

When I ping both their ip address there is a reply. Ubuntu Server can see shared files from Windows 98 but Windows 98 cannot see Ubuntu Server through Network Neighborhood and their is an error " Unable to connect the network". View 4 Replies View RelatedI have 3 computers. One running openSuse 11.3 with SAMBA and the other 2 are Windows 7 Professional boxes. I have the same user name and passwords for all three boxes.
From the Linux box I can access one of the Windows 7 boxes but the other won't accept my user name and password. The one that won't accept has Windows LiveID Sign-In Assistant installed. Apparantly that's an automatic install now.
I've read that there is a bug with the SAMBA libsmbclient [URL].
I tried updating via YAST but still end up with version 3.5.4-5.1.2 and this doesn't work.
OK, this is really little to do with Linux, as my question really involves my Vista Home machines. Anyone know good methods to have Windows Vista (Home Edition) machines stay mapped to a SAMBA share on a Linux server? I'm using user-level security on the server (Ubuntu Server 10.10), and it (generally) works really well, but I can't get the rest of my family to use it, as (understandably), they don't want to have to type in their password to the share every time they log in to the Vista machines (or my one XP machine left, for that matter), plus the problems when it occasionally decides it's already tried to connect once and failed, and refuses to "restore" the connection, ugh. I currently have one Win7 machine, and surprisingly, with the Win7 Home Premium edition, it actually "remembers" the passwords to the SAMBA shares.

So in the smb.conf file i made the entries as following:
After that root user was able login to both /srv/www/htdocs and also project folder and developer was only able to login to projects folder.That was according to my requirement but now the problem is that when developer is trying to edit any file in projects folder he is getting error that you dont have permissions to change this file.But developer should be able to edit any files. What changes i need to do now.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 beta yesterday and most of it is working very well. However, I ran into a problem with permissions today.I have a HDD containing my home folder and a HDD containing my data folder. The HDD with the data folder is mounted on /media/data/data_1.

I made sure I had set a+x rights on the file, tried executing it as root but the permission error stayed.When I copy that same file to my Desktop folder I can perfectly execute it.When it's located on the other hard drive I can't. I tried several command line scripts and they all work when I execute them from my OS hard drive,but not from another hard drive.
Solaris is the os used. I want to copy files from UNIX Machine to windows network drive.I know smbclient,ftp can be used. But is there any other best option i can use?
