View 1 Replies View RelatedCut the windows cord 6 months ago, and was up and running 11.1 almost perfectly. The only problem was the 3D desktop wasn't running, so I decided to upgrade to 11.2 . That appears to have been a mistake for two reasons, 1) the 3D graphics weren't running because I was only using the motherboard for graphics and 2) the upgrade doesn't like the onboard ATI graphics or the new ATI card that I've since bought.
Initially I was only getting a black screen, then after running the install repair it wouldn't boot at all.Bought the new video card, and tried some bad advice before trying to boot and disabled the onboard video to see if it would recognize the new card, then I was flying blind with no video. After removing the boards battery and resetting the bios jumper, I was able to boot with limited sucess, and I ran the repair tool several more times but was still unable to get to a command prompt.
I've now done a clean install with the new video card and now I can get to a command prompt but the boot is still being interupted. With some help I've also been able to run Yasta from the command prompt and install the latest (last weekend) updates.I get to runlevel 5 and it shows maximum number of X display failures reached.I'm using an AMD Athlon 64 X2 on a Biostar TA780G motherboard. I believe the motherboard uses an ATI chip and the new video card is a Sapphire HD 2400 with an ATI chip.
So 2 days ago everything was all fine on my machine. Has been for about a month, but all of a sudden as of yesterday I have no sound, I am seeing IRQ interupts on boot, During boot I am seeing file system is not clean, , and swap space is being used for the first time while doing normal task, etc. These are 2 new hard drives in RAID 1 with ReiserFS. I should have used a newer FS but thats a whole other argument.
Anyways here we go.
The system is Debian Lenny amd64
Physical RAM 4GB + 6GB swap
/var/log/messages
Code:
Feb 21 07:35:09 Sarah kernel: imklog 3.18.6, log source = /proc/kmsg started.
Feb 21 07:35:09 Sarah rsyslogd: [origin software="rsyslogd" swVersion="3.18.6" x-pid="3994" x-info="http://www.rsyslog.com"] restart
code....
I bought a new SD card which I intend to put some MP3s on - except that I can't write to it because it tells me the destination is Read Only. No-probs thinks I: I'll just reformat it.
"Error creating file system: helper exited with exit code 1: cannot open /dev/mmcblk0p1: Read-only file system"
Various chmod commands all result in Read-only file system. I tried umount then mount commands, but it couldn't find it to mount once I'd unmounted it using the same /media/ file path (I assume it's the only one).
The problem is this: I have a 320gb HDD splitted in 4 partitions. When I first installed Windows XP I formatted the HDD in 3 (Windows system partition, Media partition and another one I left for Linux). However Linux requires another partition for swap. Everything was just fine. One day Windows stopped working and I tried re-installing it. After the system was ready to start, Windows failed to boot with "NTLDR is missing" message. I tried to recover the Master boot record, even replaced NTLDR manually - nothing worked. I read that in order a HDD to be partitioned in more than 3 parts the so called "extended" partitions must be created. I think this may cause the problem but I don't want to wipe out everything (I have more than 100 GB of books most of which are not available anymore in the same locations I have downloaded them)
View 1 Replies View RelatedSuppose I have 2 hard drives, each with 4 partitions. One hard drive has OpenSuse 10.3 on one of it's partitions, and the other hard drive has Ubuntu 10.04 on one of it's partitions.
I would like to know if it is possible to boot from a System Rescue CD or Parted Magic (CD), then look over the hard drives and partitions with a partition editor, then choose one Linux partition, and "boot that distro". Somehow, I suppose, control from the live CD would be given to the chosen hard drive system ???
Reserving the right to ask follow-up questions :-)

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm investigating how to copy a file located in my file system into another device. I googled to find a solution for my case but I didn't find anything. My original problem was to find a way to permit my code to move a file into a USB device. I wonder If is there a way to implement the cp command or some mechanism that permits my code to interact with between the file system on my computer and the second one on USB external driver (FAT32) ?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI will be setting up a computer for people who have very little experience using computers and I want to limit their ability to break things. I'm thinking Linux is the way to go but I don't know what distribution to use. I don't know anything about their hardware other than it is an old laptop. I don't have a lot of experience with Linux, but I would think that without sudo there is not a lot of things you can break.
What would be a good Linux dist that has everything out of the box? (flash, vnc, office, etc) How should I set up the user account to avoid giving them too much power, yet still allowing the computer to be useable for daily tasks? (Will they be able to update software?) I also want to be able to control the machine remotely since I won't have physical access after I set it up, so I am looking into ssh, vnc, (or a better alternative?).
I m trying to take a console of linux machine using putty. Whenever i connect to the machine and give password details to log into the machine it hangs for some time and then it allow the login.

I had my server going pretty good. Two sites being hosted. Wilmingtoncoc and Mikealrhughes. Last night we had Thunderstorms and Tornadoes come through. While I was out Tornado chasing. We lost power here for an instant and back on. When I came in the server was off. So I booted it back up. The mikealrhughes site is still working good. The Wilmingtoncoc site is giving me a Database read error, it is a WordPress site. Also I can't log into the Server using SSH. Where do I start to repair the problem? Do I reinstall SSH if so what is the command I use? Then how do I solve the WordPRess Database problem? Also when I try and issue a command from the Server with sudo in front of it I get an error message that says - sudo: must be setuid root - whatever that means. I couldn't find that in any of the books I have.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI need to give a user write access to /var/www and its subdirectories. The current directory permissions are as follows:rwx r-x r-x root root
I added the user to the root group but that didn't seem to help.I read I could chmod -R to change the access to write for the www directory and subdirectories but I don't want to change things and mess up the website. How can I give the user access to write to the www directory and subdirectories without messing anything up? Would changing the www directory group owner to his group cause an issue anywhere?
