In this case its the french accented e that is getting translated:[test]$ touch dd touch: cannot touch `351dd': No such file or directory the thing is the folder test is an smb mount. The windows server which is dropping files into it is able to make the file visible but the app running on the linux can't fetch it because the name is 'unexpected'if I create a file anywhere else e.g. in /tmp/ with the name response.txt it is fine. When I ls I see r?sponse. Can you advise me if I should be looking at the smb config AND the host config and give me some pointers as to where to get started trying to solve this.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have sucessfully installed Debian 8 stable onto a powermac G5 with and Nvidia FX5200 graphics card, and got the graphics up and running using the nouveau.modeset=0 kernel parameter. However, now the screen is showing completely messed up graphics. The kernel parameters that I have set are: nouveau.modeset=0 and video=TV-1:d.
I've now tried other Desktop environments and they too are messed up. Even window maker is messed up.
This happened to me first time when i installed VLC Player, and now it happens in QT Designer too I dont know if its relevant, but when i installed Ubuntu,i installed it in Serbian language (cyrilic) and than switched to English.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm a old ubuntu user and It's a long time a have this problem (probably since Gutsy Gibbon) but just now I decided to ask for the community help to solve it, until now I fault every try.randomly, on my desktop and screen in general, appears something like confused characters composing strange writing, and the way to remove them is by selecting a empty area around them, dragging it with the left mouse button.
Those sort of writing appears everywhere on the screen but never over a open application area, those characters looks like a sort of refresh error that I'm unable to definitively remove. To let you better understand how this problem looks like, I link a snapshot of my desktop to show you the problem.
I can't find the reason cups pdf driver do this. I created my default printer as is told:

After the on-board video chip failed, I added a ATI RADEON V7500-P128 video card. Works fine, hi resolution but the b/w print characters on screen are dim to the point that items cannot be viewed. Tried a lower resolution to no avail. How do I darken the font?
When I open a terminal or konsole window, output (either STDOUT or STDERR) sometimes contains funny characters instead of something meaningful. Can someone explain how I might correct this situation?
ANALYSIS:
One very repeatable example involves using the manual page command
Code:
man set... man page output ...upstart - event-based init daemon
In my copy of the output, there are several problems in the very first screen. In the synopsis section, there is "{ value | ?value? ..." Replace the '?' with a lower-case-a-under-a-carat character (a-hat).
I suspect the garble character might be apostrophe in real life.
In other places, I see var?/able or how?/ever or trans?/action where the '?' is again a-hat and the '/' represents end of line or newline. I suspect the garble character might be a hyphen in real life.
All of this suggests that there is a conflict between the character stream written to STDOUT by the man command and the character-display settings (is that "code page" or similar?) of the specific terminal or konsole in use.
In specific, I use konsole v1.6.6 from KDE v3.5.10. In general, I'm running Ubuntu Hardy (v8.04.3 LTS).
I've created a live cd with wubuntu.iso on it and am having trouble getting it to deploy on another laptop. Is there another file in the remastersys folder that needs to be added so it will auto deploy? This is part of remastersys creation for cloning your system to deploy on another laptop/pc.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm just learning to use Eclipse (have previously been a vim+make developer). I created the standard Hello World project following the tutorial. The program compiles fine, but if I build it again without cleaning the project, make aborts with a glibc double free message (pasted below). The same thing happens if I run make in the Debug directory outside eclipse. I don't know make well enough to figure out what the problem is, and to my mind Eclipse shouldn't be generating a buggy makefile anyway.
I've attached a tarfile of the project directory. Download the file and the following sequence of commands should show you the problem:
tar xvzf HelloWorld.tar.gz && cd HelloWorld/Debug && make && make
Also, if you think it would be worthwhile submitting a bugreport to the Fedora Eclipse dev team, let me know where I can do that and I'll be happy to.

View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with GRUB 2 that I hope someone here can help me fix. Every time I boot I get an error because GRUB deletes that last part of the initrd line in /boot/grub/grub.cfg.
So this:

And the windows part is also broken:

If I add an extra character at the end of the line it get removed instead and then it works. But only until next time the grub.cfg is auto updated. The error is only there when booting. Reading the file every character is in there.
While modifying the definition of my PS1, I saw that "[" and "]" markers should be added to help bash to compute the right display lenght. Many exemples on the web do not use them or even mention them.I searched for a solution to add them automatically, like with sed, but I didn't find any example. Are they still needed and is there a recommandation not to use sed to define PS1?

I used to run lighttpd with php in my server until now and all was fine. But yesterday I changed my website which needs apache to run. So installed apache using yum install httpd command.
Then I added the virtual host name of my domain in webmin panel but when i try to run my php script in browser then its not opening php pages.
Instead it downloads php files like index.php when i open in browser. So I guess apache is not able to compile and run php pages. Only html pages are opening right now..
What command could I use in terminal to delete all ASCII characters? That is, delete a-z, A-Z, 0-9, and all punctuation? I have a file containing Chinese characters, and I want to remove everything else and leave just the Chinese.
I can use grep to leave only the lines that have Chinese in them, but this still leaves a lot of non-Chinese stuff on those lines. Does anyone know how I could actually remove everything that isn't Chinese?
I have my OpenSuse 11.1 box set up with utf-8, however, every time I try to open a file with utf-8 characters with vi it can't handle those characters properly.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have installed fedora 8 on my cPCI based system [URL]. It seems to have 256MB RAM. Once I login as root in text editor mode, I typed init 5. But the graphical display appears very blur. I changed the monitor, but still same result. One more observation I made is, after 10mins it used to enter into screen saver mode (blank screen), but when I pressed some button, the graphical display appeared with full colors. But now even this is not happening. The system just goes into some state after init 5, where my the display goes blank and even the keyboard doesn't work.

I have a couple things I think is my video card. One annoying thing it does is to put half inch square boxes in random places and times that might be trying to display what was in that spot before you changed the window. Sometimes it can be important information so I had to find a way to do something about it. I couldn't get rid of them but I could move them out of the way by moving the pointer to a different area and turning the scroll wheel. That would put the square in the new area where the pointer was.
The other thing is very bad scroll control. Sometimes I would have to use the arrows in the corner. Sometimes I had to drag the slider which moved hard, not at all or very delayed. The squares also make highlighting very difficult. Because an area will not be highlighted you don't know the results until you paste it. It might be perfect. I believe the video card is on the motherboard. I do have a spare slot so If needed I could put in a new one. Where is my title bar at the top of a screen which allows you to move it around or -minimize or maximize or close.
I just set up a separate monitor, I am running Ubuntu 10.04, I use the nVidia graphics driver, Now the Bars on the top and the bottom of the screen won't appear and can't be used. I rebooted w/ out the second monitor and now it disabled itself. I can't get the terminal option at the login screen. When I rebooted the first time w/ the second screen icon's on the desktop appeared. Now nothing appears, but the background. I opened up my browser (Google Chrome) by my key combinations for those who are wondering how I posted this.
