General :: Solution For Using X And Windows Over Internet?

Feb 8, 2011

Macbook air as local in-hands computer, connected at home over 802.11G->Verizon FIOS 15mbit down/5mbit up fiber. Also sometimes from other connections fast (university) and slow (hotels etc).Dell poweredge 750 server remotely wired GbE through 25mbit down 15mbit up fiber

So far I've tried to just ssh -X poweredge and run X apps, redirecting them to my local X server on Mac OS X. This worked great from my university's connection (over wifi) but worked poorly at home. Apparantly X protocol is very sensitive to latency.. windows wouldn't accept button presses for instance, would have to click many times. I've heard there are X settings and SSH settings I can use to decrease latency - does anyone know more about these??? As far as security, all I actually care about is encrypting my pw as I log in. It's not a sensitive situation. I suppose a solution would be to set DISPLAY on the Linux box to my IP and port except that it often changes and I'm always behind firewalls (some that I can put holes in like home, some I can't like school)I've also tried VNC which works "ok"

When using windows, which I haven't tried yet, are my options to remote desktop over SSH and VNC over ssh (run VNC server on XP) - or are there any more? What's likely to work best?Looking for an answer to tweaking the latency and also any completely fresh ideas or suggestions of tools that may be better suited to this situation

General :: Cannot Connect To Internet / Solution For This?

Nov 23, 2010

I burned the Knoppix ISO to a DVD in roder to boot my comptuer which has BSOD problems...

I've been told a couple of solutions that I couldn't access due to safe mode just going into a BSOD.

So I found Knoppix and it's great. but it won't connect me to the Internet. I use a router and it detects the connection i use. I click on it and type in my WEP key which I know is correct and it tries connecting. After a few seconds the screen pops in again asking me for my WEP key again.

Anyone know how I can connect to the Internet?

But whenever I connect to a network I can't get to the Internet. It will connect and say its connected, but no Internet. It's the exact same thing on my desktop.

Ubuntu Networking :: Not Connecting To Internet With Netgear WG111v2 / Solution For This?

Jun 25, 2010

I'll plug in my Netgear wireless USB adapter, and it'll recognize it right away. I'll type in my WEP key, and then it will say configuring. It will then bring up a "Secrets for [router]", with a ASCII key, and I'll check the pass phrase I entered, which is the correct WEP key. I then hit okay, and it says "setting up network address", and then brings up the Secrets page over again.

This particular wireless card works fine on Ubuntu, and worked fine on Zenix, but for some reason, won't work with Kubuntu.

Ubuntu Networking :: Windows 7 Machine Can't See Computer / Solution For This?

Jul 5, 2010

Windows 7 computer can't see ubuntu 10.04 computer. Ubuntu machine can see and access rest of windows network including a linux enabled PVR. Tried various things to no avail. When setting up for shared folders I got a message that I needed to install shared services. I did this but I only have one share through option: Unix networks (NFS). The samba option, which I should be using is not available. I tried to allow "Share files over the network" but had to install some extra service. While "share files over the network" can and has been enabled, accessing the windows network has become painfully slow and my windows 7 machine still can't see the linux box

Ubuntu Servers :: Open Source Solution To Backup Windows Environment

Feb 17, 2010

I am mainly a Windows admin, but I do *NIX administration from time to time, for now I need to use an open source solution for backup windows environment mainly, I spent last days playing with bacula and backupPC, and I then chose backupPC, I built a solution with it seems working not bad, but before i go on deeper, I thought asking geeks here better, my main experience with back was with Vertias/Symantec Backup Exec, what do you recommend as most similar backup solution in Ubuntu offer a close level (I don't backup to tapes I back to hard disks), also a gui is preferred, while backupPC do a nice work and i handled its client config file (machine_name.pl), but I still do mistakes sometimes and troubleshooting is annoying, I have to backup files from users machines some of these files are running (like PST files), and I could need to backup a database or something from time to time. so whats your opinion all?

General :: Sharing A Folder Between It And Windows Over The Internet

Jun 7, 2010

Currently my job is to make websites with Django. I use many things like virtualenv, PIL, etc. The problem is, I can't stand Linux on my desktop. I like it on servers, It's greate to use it over the SSH. But for desktop? No way. But for the development Linux is quite essential. Of course almost everything is ported to Windows, but it's not as simple to use as in Linux. For example, Windows shell is awful in comparison with Linux. So I've tried Cygwin, but it's too damn slow. Every time django dev server reloads, it tooks almost 20-30 seconds. In comparison, then using "native" python on Windows or Linux, it reloads instantly. Even worse, Cygwin makes all my system very slow.

I've been thinking about it and have thought up a way to go. I can share a folder with my application with some Linux box. The devserver and everything will run on that box, while I'll be happy editing files and running the browser on my Windows 7. SSH shell is much quickier and handy than Cygwin. Currently there are no Linux boxes in my home network (except for my android phone :) but I have several VDS boxes with Debian.

So, how do I share a Windows folder with VDS box? I can't rely on my desktop IP but I can rely on the VDS's one. I need sharing to be as quick as possible (well, 2-3 seconds ping is OK) and "native" for both systems, so I could use a folder like a normal folder in both Windows and Linux.

The first time, it can connect to the wireless internet in the dormitory. The succeeding days, the network icon just keeps on turning as if it's trying to connect. What's wrong? Is it because of the drivers? If that's the case, then why are there times when I can connect to the wireless internet?

Moreover, Slashdot loads very very slow and sometimes gets horrible text-only version.

everything works fine on Linux host

I suspect it has something to do with routing on Linux, I recall having similar problem long time ago, which was fixed by setting something in /proc.

I tried setting MTU and TCP window size on Windows lower, but did not help

General :: Running Ubuntu 10.04 Inside VMware Player - Windows Vista - Can't Connect To The Internet

Jun 10, 2010

I'm running Ubuntu 10.04 inside VMware Player running under Windows Vista and I can't connect to the internet or the host computer from the Ubuntu.

I have set all the VMware services to manual (like VMware DHCP Service), but starting them manually doesn't help.

In VMware, the network seems to work (there is a green dot beside the network icon) and I have tried both Bridged and NAT settings.

ifconfig doesn't show the eth1 interface, unless I give it as a parameter (or use -a). I think this means that Ubuntu thinks that the network isn't connected at all.
