General :: Slow Running Ubuntu 10.10 Laptop?

Oct 31, 2010

I have a slow computer. When I click on an icon say Firefox it can take 10 seconds to load. when I minimize and maximize windows you can see it happening. I get "ghost" screens where you see the window outline of the box but nothing in it or it may be white. The laptop is two years old and has these specs:

Intel core two duo 2.8GHZ CPU
4GB RAM
500GB HDD
512MB Nvidia 8600GT video
Realtek HD audio

What is going on and where should I start looking for issues? Ubuntu 10.10 was upgraded from 10.04LTS following the instructions from the Ubuntu Wiki and it was done through the update manager GUI, not the CLI.

Ubuntu :: Laptop Runs Unbearably Slow When A Dock Is Running?

Nov 29, 2010

My friend recently gave up on Windows Vista on his old laptop and installed Ubuntu 10.10 64 Bit on it. He came over the other day because I wanted to show him and install some cool things. One of those things was a dock. I tried both AWN and Docky. When the dock started running his system became so unbearably slow. Like it took over 5 seconds to respond to movements sometimes. When he closed the dock everything went speedy again. He has a whole lot of compiz stuff running now, including desktop cube/animations burning up windows when he closes them. I'm wondering why the dock is causing such a major slow down.

His specs aren't even that bad. He has a Dell XPS M1330 with the following specs:Intel Core 2 Duo T6400 (2.0GHZ)4GB of RAMNVIDIA 8400M GSMy laptop has very similar specs to his, except my integrated graphics card is an ATI 3200 and it runs AWN and Docky flawlessly. Anyone have any ideas what could be causing this? His graphics card was one of those faulty NVidia cards from back then but he already had it fixed twice and its been running Vista without any graphic issues fine since. I didn't get a chance to look at it again since then so I couldn't play around.. I'm thinking he might have possibly messed something up playing around when he first installed it. I may suggest a clean install and do everything again to see if the problem persists.

Ubuntu Networking :: Slow File Sharing \ Copy Some Files From Laptop(also Running 10.04) And Getting Around 300-500 Kb/s?

Aug 9, 2010

I recently got my D-Link DWA-556 pci card working with my new desktop with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit. Connection speed is good, but local network file transfer speeds are pitiful. I'm trying to copy some files from my laptop(also running 10.04) and I'm getting around 300-500 kb/s, which is actually lower than my typical download speeds. Anyone know what the problem might be? output of iwconfig is this:

General :: Ubuntu 8.04 Running Very Very Slow?

Apr 14, 2010

My Toshiba Satellite Pro SP2100 with Ubuntu 8.04 all of a sudden is running very very slow taking ages to boot and is unstable. Some functions will not work at all and when typing the letters appear some time after they are typed. Nothing was downloaded or anything different it was being used just as it has been for more than two years. It has 512 ram. I tried the Mem test and after running for more than 12 hours showed no problems. I did a re-install no better, I tried to load Nimble X but it would not load and it has in the past, tried a Intrepid and it took hours to load but no good.

General :: System Laptop Slow Startup / Reason Of This?

Oct 21, 2010

Just got this Dell M4400 with Redhat EL5 installed.
After I setup the xorg.conf for dual monitor, the startup became extremely slow. Once I type in the user name and password, it just blacks out with the mouse curser still visible. This remains for about 3-4 minutes and then I'm in.

I thought it was my X file, so I overwrote the xorg.conf with my original file and restarted my X. Sadly, it still does that.

What could be causing it? Do I have to reinstall video driver or something?

General :: Running Ubuntu 10.10 And Wireless Internet Was Very Slow?

Jun 2, 2011

I was running Ubuntu 10.10 and my wireless Internet was very slow (~1 minute to load a website, and downloading was excruciating). I dual boot my machine with windows 7, and I have no wireless problems at all when I am running windows. I disabled IPV6 and that did not do anything.I recently upgraded to Ubuntu 11.04 hoping that this may fix the problem however my wireless internet is still very slow. When I plug my computer directly to my modem, I have no problems at all.I was wondering if anyone had any ideas as to what might be making my wireless Internet so slow when I run Ubuntu?

General :: Windows XP Running As Guest On VirtualBox Is Very Slow

Aug 9, 2011

We had an old Windows XP server running a Filemaker database on a 2.6 GHz Intel CPU, but that server died. It's been replaced by a box with two 2.4 GHz Xeon CPUs and 5 GB of RAM that's running Ubuntu 11.04 natively, and Windows is running as a VirtualBox guest. 2GB of RAM has been dedicated to the Windows guest.Of course, these old Xeon CPUs don't have the VT-x extensions, so I wouldn't expect to be able to add CPUs to the VirtualBox guest, but the Filemaker database is running at least 2-3x slower than it did on the old server. I would expect that utilizing one 2.4GHz CPU out of four available shouldn't result in such an astounding difference.

I would also like to be able to continue using this setup, since it would also mean we'd be able to remove our Linux server from the rack, which is running on even slower hardware (not that the system requirements are high for its job though). So my question is: Why is this so slow? Is there anything I can do to change the situation? Or should I just give up now and find more suitable hardware?I understand that the "new" machine should be about 1% slower in theory, so please don't tell me this "should" be fine. I need more concrete answers (as in, "I've tried this before and you should do X") since in the real world, it appears to be about 50% slower. I'm about to blame "virtual" CPUs to multithreading on single core processors, and possibly the difference in CPU architecture between Xeon and Pentium 4 CPUs.

I have dual boot on my machine - Windows Vista and Fedora 12.

I have noticed that while I am on Vista, the fan runs only intermittently, but while I am on Fedora, it runs continuously. I have tried to tweak the power and CPU settings for Fedora, but did not get anywhere.

Should I be worried that the fan is running continuously? Or is it okay, the fan is just doing its job?

General :: Laptop - Running Skype On A 400 Mhz Machine?

I have an offer for a free outdated laptop, and wondering if it's possible to run skype on this. It will be running with a very stripped-down Ubuntu Linux operating system, and no other graphical goodies hogging up the processing power.

The specs will be:

400 Mhz Celeron processor

Approx 300 MB RAM

Rest is unknown.

Think this is capable of running skype with video?

its running a little slower than I hoped it would, loading movies takes a while, and when i switch to full screen, it takes about 5 seconds to catch up.

im suspicious that my video card driver might not be configured correctly. can anyone tell me what I might need to configure to get things running smoother?

other things on the computer are also running slow, like opening Firefox, it takes a while for the window to appear.

- Athlon 64 x2 5200+
- Gigabyte GA-MA78GM-S2h motherboard
- Radeon HD 3650 512mb pci-e
- 4gb DDR2 800

and I do have ATI catalyst installed

Ubuntu :: Running A Little Slow - Jerky Even ?

Apr 24, 2010

I'm running 9.1 Karmic Koala UNR and recently (over the last week or two) the system has been running somewhat slowly. The boot is still lightning fast, but opening up programs takes a second or two, it can sometimes take a second or two for menu's to respond to mouse overs.

I've noticed the problems in applications as well. Streaming media over firefox (and I have a 40GB landline, I don't do lag) appears jerky as if skipping a frame or two while sound carries on almost as normal.

Netbeans (I have crash issues at the moment) also runs slowly, alt-tab takes a few seconds longer than every other program.

General Windows are just slow to load (one to three seconds) and menu's take a while to appear (2-3 seconds on mouseover or click)

Usually Ubuntu is lightning fast, I by no means have top of the range laptop...sacrifices have to be made... it's a simple Acer notebook.

Ubuntu :: Running Off A USB Stick; Very Slow?

Now that I'm on Ubuntu, I love the look of it. Navigating the OS menus is fast and programs are generally fast once they're running, but they're extremely slow when first opened (basic programs like Firefox, OpenOffice Writer, etc.). Is this because I'm running Ubuntu off of a USB stick? I don't know if I'd make the full switch if programs typically open this slow, but otherwise I love Ubuntu.

The resource manager tells me that I am using approx. 30% of my CPU and about 25% of my memory. The slow down occurs if I open min. (1-2) apps or more. Also, I can not track it to occurring after I use a specific app. The only non-standard item I installed was a Broadcom wireless driver.

Hardware :: Fastest Distro / GUI For Slow Laptop

Jan 6, 2010

I just receive a very thin laptop but pretty old, it has 2 hard drives or kind of hard drives... of 16 GB each, I don't know about the RAM, probably 512 Mb, maybe 1 Gb (I don't remember how to see that on windows) and an intel core duo. It's currently running a legal windows xp (I specify legal cause it's pretty rare), it's not "slow" but it could be a lot faster, it still takes a few seconds to load IE and stuffs.

I'm a mac user, I'm only using debian server version for web servers and databases so I don't know how it works with a user interface.I've heard about Archlinux, it says it's pretty fast but do you know which one is the fastest one ?

I'll be using the laptop for taking notes only, probably on google docs but it'd be cool if I could store some images and stuff without waiting 10 secs to open a new window.By the way, if you could quickly explain me how do I install the GUI and which one is fastest cause when I've installed Ubuntu, Gnome was already installed by default. Finally, there is no way to insert DVD / CDs, it's like the Mac Book Air, so I haven't installed any linux distro from a USB stick either.
