I am using a dual boot with windows vista, I would rather use ubuntu but my wife wants windows. How do I change my boot order to boot into windows instead of ubuntu? My ubuntu is an upgraded version from 8.? then 9.04 then 9.10

On my first HDD, I have Windows XP and ubuntu and on the new HDD, I will install Windows 7. What I wanted to ask, are such things like jumpers on my HDD (master/slave etc.) used to select boot order? Or will I have to go into BOOT settings and choose Win7 Hdd first in the boot order etc.?

When I select the Vista option in the Grub bootloader it restarts the computer and comes back to the grub menu screen again. I have run the boot_info_script. View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a single hard-drive on a spare computer and I decided to try out Ubuntu on recommendation from a friend. I really like it now but at first I just dual-booted it, and now I want Vista gone. I know it's unnecessary to have just one OS but my hard-drive isn't particularly big and I'd prefer to have Ubuntu by itself. Can anyone tell me how to eliminate vista and leave Ubuntu as my sole operating system (I've all my files from computer on another computer so I don't have to worry about losing anything).

View 1 Replies View RelatedHave just installed 9.10, again, many failed attempts previously.Cannot get to boot up and show menu on dual boot with Vista initially,However when I delete the grubenv file the system boots ok and works fine.But does not show the grub menu to choose boot up choices.Got the information to delete the file on some posts elsewhere about booting problem, and tried a longshot and got into Ubuntu for the first time from trying to install now for 3 months!The problem is the file grubenv is created each time so on subsequent boot ups the sytem fails to boot again.The Grub version is 1.97 beta 4, most up to date for Karmic I think, I have seen a version 1.98 but dont think its for Karmic?

i had a working multi-boot system, vista on sda1,2; swap sda3; ext=sda4; ubuntu sda5; fedora sda6; data sda7 - i mount the data partition when using all of the linux releases so i don't have to have multiple copies of music, docs, etc. everything has worked fine until yesterday. i tried to install fc12 on sda6, replacing fc11. it required me to format sda6 as ext4. i wasn't sure where i had grub installed, but have a backup of menu.lst in data (sda7), so figured i could let it install to mbr or wherever it wanted to by default. when the install completed and i reboot, i get a black screen and these messages: CLIENT MAC ADDR: 00 19 XX XX XX GUID: XXXXX PXE-E53:

No bootable device -- insert boot disk and press any key I tried reinstalling fc12, same exact errors. I then thought maybe the problem had something to do with ext4 partition mixed in with ext3's, so i installed mepis on the sda6, and let it write grub to mbr (i think, not really sure where it wrote it). anyway, i still get the identical black screen. no grub type menu or anything. the screen used to show "DHCP for a few seconds", but doesn't anymore after i disconnected the ethernet cable.........
been trying to get linux installed on a troublesome laptop for 48 hours now without any luck so thought I'd post here as my last option.
I've tried installing 10.10 desktop, 9.04 netbook remix and just this minute 10.04 netbook versions of ubuntu, as well as other versions of various linux distros.
I woke up this morning and burnt 10.04 netbook to CD (not usb) as I wanted to put it on an old laptop with max resolution of 1024x768. I put it in an external CD drive and it boots up to the options screen on the Live CD, where you can choose to 'try Ubuntu netbook without installing' or 'install ubuntu netbook' etc.
The problem is, I can't click (press enter) on any of the options. The same problem arose with earlier versions, i.e 9.04 netbook remix Ubuntu.
Laptop model: Compaq Presario R3000.
I use dual OS, n i have a problem when i want to set boot order. Can i change boot order? or can i make a priority for my OS?

I want to change it so I can go into ubuntu after 30SEC so I don't have to always select it.
I have two questions:
1. I had Win XP, I've installed Ubuntu on another Partition, now Ubuntu starts first, can I change XP to be the first one to load ? And how to do it ?
2. When I have to choose from 2 installed systems on the screen I see, Ubuntu, Testmem and Windows XP, can I rename Windows XP title to something else ? And how to do it ?
Using StartupManager (as Quackers had suggested) I do indeed have Windows as my default boot, although it appears at the bottom of the menu. See Dilemma 1 below for that detail.
Dilemma 1:Grub2 has set up the boot menu so that Windows is the last item on the menu. This is because the Menuitem entries for the Ubuntu kernels are generated by script 10_linux, while the Windows Menuitem entry is generated by script 30_os-prober. Of course, in generating /boot/grub/grub.cfg, the 10_linux script is executed before 30_os-prober, dictating the order of their appearance on the menu.
I'd like to see Windows as the top menu item. Under grub, I would edit /boot/grub/menu.lst, pull the Windows menu item out of the "Automagical" section and voila! It stays on top no matter how many times I upgrade the kernel. While I could possibly do the same with /boot/grub/grub.cfg (see thread "how can I change the order of the boot menu?" for the suggestion) we should all know by now that the next time I update the kernel, my changes will all go away, because we are not supposed to edit that file by hand.
Dilemma 2: As I download and install kernel updates, all the old kernels still show up on my boot menu. My concern is that eventually the sheer number of Linux kernels will render the boot menu unreadable. This is especially of concern if I cannot get Windows to the top of the boot menu. Under grub, I used to edit the menu.lst and comment out the listing of any kernels more than 2 versions old. Now, how do I arrange this omission? A manual edit of 10_linux will be acceptable, provided it still displays the 2 or 3 most recent Linux kernels and their corresponding memtests.
Just installed 11.04 and do not know how to change the boot order in the new grub.

Having a major issue with my laptop. I am unable to boot into my Vista installation.I am currently posting this through my Fedora 11 installation which I had already. If anyone is interested, the BSOD error is:

As far as I know, a '7B' BSOD is usually a hard disk error but I am 100% sure the HDD is fine as I can read and write from both Fedora and Knoppix without issue. Steps taken so far: Obviously, I have tried the usual steps of trying to start windows in safe mode, last good config, and all of the F8 options. When they failed, I used fedora to check for some solutions online (Mostly useless answers from MS) and I found one successful case when a person flashed his BIOS back to an earlier time. Unfortunately, I cant get the BIOS update I got from the Dell website to boot from a USB drive (Says invalid boot disc - the BIOS on it is in the .exe format which I can't use in linux) and I do not have a floppy drive on the laptop.
So, I put in my Dell drivers and utilities CD hoping that it would give me some option to update (Or roll back) the BIOS but there was no such option. However, it did give me a load of diagnostic options including repair options by symptom so went with the "Unable to boot from BIOS". Unfortunately, that didnt help me at all. So, I got my Vista installation disc (OEM supplied) and managed to get to the repair menu (Which I had among my F8 options anyway) but this also has the option to reinstall. Unfortunately, it states that "Upgrade is unavailable" and that a clean install is the only thing I can select (At the expense of my files and settings).
As for the repair options, the automatic recovery doesn't seem to find any errors, asks to reset and see if all is well (It isn't). For some reason, system restore doesn't detect any restore points. There are no windows memory errors detected and I have no backups. So, i'm left with a command prompt that, by default, is asking for a file in this folder: X:/WINDOWS/System32/ I have no idea where it is getting the X: drive from - I have C and D drives for windows only. I placed it on /dev/hda4 of an IDE disk, while on /dev/hda1 I have a RedHat 9 Linux, /home is on /dev/hda2 and the swap is on /dev/hda3. I'm not sure if RedHat 9 and Fedora 10 can coexist on the same HD.
There's an option in the Live KDE CD boot install, which allows one to select:

Do you know what to type in in order to direct Fedora to boot from /dev/hda4 (who may be /dev/sda4 as seen by Fedora)?
P.S. For the time being, I want to forget about Grub or LILO and see if I can boot it this way first. I have LILO working, it boots Windows from a separate disk and RedHat 9 from /dev/hda1.
I tried to install F12 on my new IDE-HDD. The installation completed without any errors. But, when rebooting my PC I got a dark screen with error message: reboot and select proper boot device.
No BIOS boot up issue, since booting up using other hard disk running windows has no problem at all. I have set the hardisk jumper to master/primary, tried to re-install F12 a couples of time, but didn't make any difference.
I have a new machine arriving tomorrow and plan on installing ubuntu 10.04 x64 and windows 7 professional. I've only ever had a single HDD before, but now I have 2 * 640GB drives.Does it matter what OS I install first?Will I have to change anything relating to the HDDs boot order in the BIOS?I only got 2 HDDs so in the event of needing to reinstall one of the OS's they're on completely different drives. Also, in the eventuality I need to reinstall one of the OSs is it simply a normal reinstall procedure, or because they're on two seperate drives will I need to do anything different?
