How can i install Ubuntu 10.04 over my older version of Xbuntu 9.10? I already have the 32 bit ISO downloaded. I am on step 5 of 8, Select Partition. But it aint letting me select the older ubuntu partition.

I am trying to put GRUB2 on the Ubuntu partition, but it will only let me pick the first two. If I pick the Ubuntu partition in the last dialog bix, it is listed as /dev/sda-1 I also have no idea why is says "-1", because the first two are fine at 1 and 2 respectively.
So I've installed Ubuntu before on this machine, but this time around with Lucid, it's just not working.
It all works fine until step four, where you choose your partition. There are no choices. Simple as that. Continuing just tells me to fix that there are no partitions, but I cant. There are questions similar to mine on here, but none are answered.
I really need this installed and cant use the live version where I'm posting from now.

just installed Fedora 15 on my system alongside Ubuntu 10.10 on My 500 GB hard disk.However on starting the computer the Fedora 15 partition gets loaded automatically. How do I access
my Ubuntu 10.10 partiion? I want to have a choice at start-up which OS to use. On my previous computer when I used to have Windows and Ubuntu,a menu used to appear asking which operating system to load.
I've not jumped on the Alpha/Beta upgrade's this time round so have decided to upgrade by doing a fresh install. I'm using the normal desktop install cd via usb. On the drive setup I choose to manually setup the partitions. I deleted the partition which help Lucid. Created a new partition with the root path. All good so far. I selected my home partition and selected use as 'ext2', entered /home as the mount point. Clicking ok to return, showed the /home partition as marked to be formatted, I was unable to change this ... so I decided to quit the installer and reboot ...
1st problem ... the root partition for Lucid was deleted, and a new empty partition created, despite the fact I had not confirmed the actions.
2nd problem ... rebooting with the live cd (which I'm on now) and running the installer, it hangs when I select manual partitioning.
im installing ubuntu and after I reach the partioning portion there's a prompt that says "before you select a new partition size, any previous changes have to be written to disk. you cannot undo this operation.Please note that the resize operation may take a long time.

However, I am still presented with the "Installation Method" and "Select Partition" screens when anaconda runs. Is the syntax of the repo boot option correct?
I want to install Ubuntu 10.04 on a brand new hard disk. It shows in the "Use Entire Disk" drop down as /dev/sda.
I don't want to use the entire disk, so I select advanced partitioning. I select the disk, and click "New Partition Table". I get an error dialogue with a title of "??? ???" and the message of "??? ???".
After this happens, I can click on "New Partition Table" to my hearts content, and nothing happens.
Going back to the previous screen after this has happened, and my new, blank disk is no longer in the drop down.
For a while now, I have multibooted my Vista installation with Ubuntu. However, up until now I have been happy with Ubuntu being in charge of my boot options. I am wanting to change my bootloader so that when my machine boots, and no choices are made at the boot menu, Vista automatically starts after a set amount of time instead of Ubuntu.
I know the boys over at APC have a guide on how to do this, but it involves copying information from the menu.lst file and using EasyBCD - I was wondering if these steps will still work now that I am running Karmic Koala, which I understand uses a different method of changing GRUB entries (manipulating the menu.lst file is no longer part of this process and is no longer recommended)
If someone could tell me how to put Vista in charge of my boot options so that it will boot automatically instead of Linux, that would be greatness.
I have VirtualBox up and running, and the installation is working, but for some bizarre reason...the Virtual Drive isn't letting me type into to complete the Installation of Ubuntu 10.10. I am currently using Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit.

BUT.. ubuntu usbmaker dont let me formate it.. i have used gparted, yes with ntfstools and tried formate it in every possible way with and without flags and **** and usbmaker dont seem to accept it however.. the usbmaker cant do ****.. it tells me it cant use the stick** and then gives me everything from 1 - 2 partitions.. i have backtracked this problem as far as i can it i dont get it..unetbootin makes it work great! but why shold i have to go so far as unetbootin to get things done? is usbmaker the most unuseless pice of software or what.. ?

The last time I tried to install 10.04 a week after it came out, I was presented with tons of errors, even though I did it the same exact way I did it with 9.10 that worked. I would like some help on the subject of installing them on usb hard drives. Most the time, it's GRUB being antsy about where it's installed. IF I don't change where to install GRUB, it won't let me boot on any other computer, or USB port.
View 9 Replies View RelatedI'd been using 10.04 for a while and then one day the computer wouldn't boot. It just loaded up to a low res purple screen with the loading dots on it and froze. I managed to get all my files back and everything and re-install and it was working fine until I enabled the graphics card and then the same problem occurred. I've isolated the problem to the graphics card. It's never given me issues before and I've been running Ubuntu for about 2 1/2 years now so I was kind of surprised.
It's an NVIDEA card by the way. Any suggestions as to what I should do? I need hardware support for graphics because I do some work in 2D and 3D and as such need to be able to do that stuff on my PC. I don't want to have to keep reinstalling to check if the graphics card is working again yet but it's the only thing I can think of =(
Network Manager icon aint showing, neither is the power manager. Im using "alt+f2" the nm-applet to get the NM work but removes after reboot, so i have to do this all time.. uhm, when trying to enable desktop effects is sats "searching for available drivers" and then "Desktop effects could not be enabled". When trying to install apps from Software center, neither of the apps installs, the button install just keep refreshing, but if i go terminal: sudo software-center im able to install everything.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI do a volunteer work for World Computer Exchange, or WCE, a non profit org.WCE get a lot of old-ish (gettins less P3s, and more P4s now) computers, install Ubuntu and ship them to schools,libraries,etc. to the developing countries.When I say Ubuntu, I often intall Xubuntu since the machines are slow, but if it meets the Ubuntu requirement in terms of memory and disk, we often install Ubuntu Ubuntu.And, installing Ubuntu in general takes time. Most people don't notice "it's slow", but if you install it to a 10GB IDE ATA4 disks,it often takes a few hours. I can do it to a handful of machines but there are so many machines to deal with.
I modified the installer to do unattended installation so it is less of hassle now but I'd like to know what I can do to speed up the installation.If it's faster, we'd be able to go though a lot more machines.Also, it would be great if it's an easy process without network. I personally use a network (pxe boot and unattended installation), but there are many volunteers and it's logistically far easier if it can be installed without it.I give out a modified CD to those volunteers and they just put it in and watch the progress of installation. Since machines often have issues with hardware, it's not a simple process even if it's unattended installer.
I took the splash about 3 months ago when I picked up a cheap book on Ubuntu that came with the 6.0 release. I had an old clone PC that I built back around 2000-2002. My apologies, but I can't quite remember the hardware specs exactly. But anyway version 6.0 worked pretty good, and I soon after upgraded via the Synaptic manager to 8.04. Everything ran a bit better on this release.
I was working on upgrading to 9.10 eventually, so I went from 8.04 to 8.10 first. However, when I rebooted after the install the GUI failed to launch. I got a lot of text on the screen saying certain things were being checked and there was an [OK] next to all of them save one. Nvidia, my graphics card had a [FAIL] next to it. I'm inclined to think this is the problem. I'm guessing the hardware is a bit outdated for the version of Ubuntu I am using?
I tried a couple of reboots and got the same messages. Eventually found my way into the Recovery mode where all the options were recovering 8.10 - not my previous version. So my question is how do I roll back to 8.06, or is there a way to update the hardware drivers so it will run on 8.10 without buying new hardware? I did somehow manage to get to a Prompt where it was asking for my Linux Login and Password.. it let me login and now I have a "DOS" prompt... not sure about the terminology if you still call that DOS or not. I'm a noob and still trying to learn the new lingo.
I don't have much to lose.. some pictures, but I figured out how to navigate to those at the prompt so I'm going to save those to disk. If I have to wipe the drive and start over I don't care, but I thought I would throw out a post here and see if anyone had a recommendation.
I have problem installing a program (GTNets) since it requires an older version of g++ (3.3), while the current version of g++ is 4.4 in my ubuntu installation (vers 9.10). Can anyone give me recommendations on how to solve this?
I guess that there should be able to install an older version of g++ in addition to the current g++. Furthermore, the current should be the default, while the older is an optional version.
The upgrade instructions say you can use the upgrade manager to go from 10.4 to 10.10. I am currently running 9.10. Will this still work? Or do I have to go to 10.4 first? Or can I download the 10.10 alternate install iso and upgrade directly with that for both my Ubuntu and UbuntuStudio installations?

My reason is to get some of the poorer kids a fighting chance at school. We sell these things for next to nothing to accomplish this. I include free tech/training support for 30 days to get them started as. My problem is that finding a version of ubuntu and openoffice that will run on them is becoming difficult. Any suggestions as to a version that works for those not real familiar with computers?

that works exectp when i change the screen resalotion to 800x600. my screen doesnot like 1024x768. after i change it I cant log in any more tell i do

I did horrible mistake and installed upgrade for firefox 3.6.15 via KPackageKit. There would be normally no problem but this version does not work with Q3 live Is there a way to select older version of software in KPackageKit, Synaptic or via dpkg?P.S. I don't want to install it from tar.gz2 file - I want normal installation.

Which works fine - except that I am going to clone this machine
and this will fail on all the other disks, which have a different serial number. It needs to be
resume=/dev/sda5
Similarly, /boot/grub/menu.lst has for root=
/dev/disk/by-id/ata-WDC_WD10EARS-00Y5B1_WD-WCAV55372533-part6
which will need to be /dev/sda6.
The part5 piece of this cannot be changed in yast. I selected that line, edited to /dev/sda5, and it came back the same way.
The part6 seems to be coming from /etc/fstab, changed it by hand to /dev/sda6, but it may not stay that way the next time yast runs. Similar changes to menu.lst did not survive a reboot, defaulting back to the "part5" syntax.
Is there some way to employ "/dev/sdX' syntax using yast, or is this one of those cases where one must work around the "help" of the easy configuration tool?
this is my first time actually asking for help here, so forgive me if I make any mistakes. The other day I was trying to install Ubuntu 9.10 on my mom's old system (not too old, has vista on it) and even from the live cd it wouldn't boot. Then I tried 8.04 because I know that works on my XP system. However it would freeze during boot but at least showed that it was booting (the bar was starting to fill).

Since we bought it it's been upgraded to 2 GB of ram and has a nVidia 8400gs video card and a belkin wireless adapter now. I can't understand why the live cds won't fully boot since my single core 2.2Ghz boots just fine with 8.04.
I was thinking of trying 6.06 to see of that might work. However I was unsure if the system is capable of running Ubuntu and might need Kubuntu or another distro.
i had a system running ubuntu karmic and grub2. Last day i installed fedora 12 on another partition and also installed the older version of grub that came along with it(because i was more used to it). The current status is:1. can boot into fedora, cannot boot into ubuntu.
2. can boot into fedora, chroot into the ubuntu partition
3. no data loss
However, i just can`t boot into ubuntu from the older version of grub which i have presently. Question is: How do i boot into karmic from the older version of grub? do take some time off and reply of you know the answer!
I just installed the latest version of Ubuntu on my Toshiba Sattelite A25-207 laptop. I totally erased my previous Windows XP OS and everything else. Everything is great, execept the screen resolution. The resolution is set at 800 x 600 and I know that my screen can handle bigger. How do I change this?

Could it be that the flash installer parses the version number wrong as previously it was glibc-2.9-1, a '9' after the dot, now there is a '1'.
I just upgraded to 10.04, and am quite happy with it so far, but it installed Firefox 3.6, which is a problem for me because I need to be able to use the Jssh plugin, which isn't available for 3.6 yet. All I need to do is downgrade Firefox to 3.5, but I seem to be having some issues, it seems that there is only the one version available to me in Synaptic. Is there another repository that I need to add to have access to an older version?
