View 1 RepliesI'm running Windows XP inside Virtual Box in Linux. In the beginning the sound works but after a while there's no more sound.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm having a problem with the terminal. When I type it only shows the bottom half of the letters. When I highlight what I typed or when I resize the window, it then shows both top and bottom half. So, basically I can't read what I'm typing until I go back and re-highlight it. I don't know if this is relevant but I'm using ubuntu 9.10 and I have an Nvidia graphics card.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI think this might be related to the changes to using udev or DeviceKit. It started when I was running the beta versions of F12. Then it crept into Debian Sid. And my Arch Testing and Gentoo also suffer from the same.
What happens is that I'll be working along. Then when I press any key it is as if the SHIFT key is pressed. When I press CAPSLOCK, some of the keys react as they would normally. This never lasts for more than 5 minutes. And seems to happen infrequently. I say seems because there are the times I am at work and it could be that the same thing is happening only there is no one on the keyboard.
The reason I pick out udev/DeviceKit is that when it used to happen to F12 beta, the other distros had not yet made the move. So back then it was only a F12 issue. Now it is happening across the board. And only started recently.
I recently ordered a vServer with Debian Etch on it and now i kind of desperate because vncpasswd just won't work. When running it, it says:Code:Password too short
The Problem is: I can't even enter one. It just prints this line and exits. What I also noticed was that after this happened I can no longer open man pages until the next reboot, as it says:
Code:
man: command exited with status 256: /usr/bin/zsoelim /tmp/zmaneFTrCR | /usr/bin/tbl | /usr/bin/nroff -mandoc -rLL=195n -rLT=195n -Tascii | /usr/bin/pager -s
Is there a command line option that will allow less to return to the command line if there are not sufficient lines in the file to warrant paging.

View 5 Replies View RelatedJust got Linux ubuntu 10.10 last week installed it and looks pretty nice. I was having problems with the wifi cutting in and out with my windows xp laptop. Wasn't sure why. I am connected via ad-hoc connection. I re-checked all the numbers and everything is ok there. Downloaded all the updates for via ubuntu update manager and it says I have Ubuntu 11.01, Don't know why that is? I have an Acer Aspire model 3680 computer. Anything I need to look for or check in the future to fix the wifi problem?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm having a slight problem with firefox in ubuntu 10.04. I'm using my (lenovo ideapad y70) laptop with a VGA connected monitor (LED-LCD TV; Vizio), and for some reason when I maximize a window, the 'x' and scroll bar on the right side are cut off. I have the dual monitor situation set up with the resolutions on the recommend levels (1920*1080 and 1400*900) and I honestly have no idea what the problem is, because I've been using the exact same setup since Lucid Lynx was officially released and it worked fine.
Today I just turned it on after being gone for the weekend, and the window was like this. Doesn't quite make sense to me. The only I changed was perhaps downloaded the updates from the update manager... but I doubt that would affect anything. Oh also, another thing I should add would be that when I was gone I left the TV in my apartment and took the laptop, so perhaps switching from dual screens to single screen and back messed it up? Not sure. I would include error output, but there arent really any errors, I think its just some sort of problem with the resolution.
This is one of two niggles I've had in migrating to ubuntu, which I must say is (otherwise) absolutely fab.
Problem 1 is an 18 month old "legacy" ATI card, which refuses to be fixed.
Problem 2 (I suspect) is more solvable.
When listening to music, (either from ..... or rhythmbox) after an indeterminate period of time, (it varies substantially from around 5 mins - 1 hour) the sound cuts out without warning. Videos continue to play, but in silence. This silence affects the browser as a whole (chromium). A workaround for this has been to simply restart the program, but this is becoming quite annoying. Sometimes issuing

Is necessary to restore sound.
I've recently upgraded to 10.04, and never had any problems in 9.10, but now, sometimes when Banshee attempts to play a sound file, it will kill my sound output until I reboot. Haven't been able to get anywhere by fiddling with ALSAmixer or the like, and everything is just fine on reboot, but the files don't always cause problems, and they were all fine back in 9.10. Has anyone else encountered this? I've been unable to find any other references to this problem.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI use the default Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040 on the default 32 bit Debian Jessie with Gnome 3.14.1 and since I installed it I can't apply some font cuts which actually do work in other applications and did work on previous versions of Debian/Inkscape.
The cuts do show up as options in the "font/style" selection menu and i can use different versions from for example "Roboto" but if I - for example - select to use the "Semi-Light" variant of Roboto it just doesn't get applied after all. (I know that many fonts do not have any font variations and Inkscape confusingly just shows at least "italic" and "bold" as options in the style list anyway.) In this case the font variant is actually there, I can use the same font variants in Gimp and I was able to use it in previous versions of Debian/Inkscape, but not now.But I noticed instabilities in Gimp, Inkscape and Scribus lately. Gimp just consistatly vanishes when I try to scroll through the font selection menu and Scribus takes ages to load and does crush from time to time without any clear pattern to me. I don't think this is caused by Roboto itself since I used it in the past without such problems.
Should I remove all custom fonts and try if everything works ok again or does this approach sound rather foolish to you? Unfortunately I need most of the additional fonts I installed for different projects and I had them on my system in the past also without having such issues. I could however remove all custom fonts and include only those absolutely needed one by one ...
After installing the latest version of opensuse I have it up and running, except that the display goes black about every 30 seconds for a moment and then comes back again.
I am guessing it is because I don't have enough ram for this OS? I am using a HP tower and I think it only has at most 512mb ram right now.
Can someone tell me if this is the issue or anything else I might try in the meantime?
When the opening little music plays during start up, the first half of it is loud, but halfway through, the sound cuts to about half volume. Everything else afterwards is also very quiet. After boosting the volume output to 150%, and boosting VLC's audio output to 200%, the audio is still barely audible on my laptop. I've gone into alsamixer, and it's at max. I once found how to reset the audio card, and the sound was normal again, but only until I shut the laptop off, and next time, it was the same as always.
I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, and using an old Toshiba Satellite laptop. Don't know what my sound card is.
When I start to download large files and try to use firefox the "Server Not Found" error appears. I'm seriously new to Linux so I don't want to be discouraged on being a fan of Ubuntu Linux.
View 7 Replies View Relatedi am using ubuntu studio karmic and i have a digitech vx400 audio effects pedal which serves as an audio in/out midi in/out device via usb. i can sucessfully set it as the system sound device in system>preferences>sound for both input and output. but, when i play audio through it it only works for a few minutes before the sound stops completely. if i leave the system settings set to the internal sound card and configure jack audio connection kit to go to the usb device, i get the same results on the usb sound. a few minutes of playback at the most.i can restart sound with either "pulseaudio --kill && pulseaudio --start" or "alsactl init" in either situation. just requires restarting the programs. same results after restarting. i think this is alsa related as i have both the system sound and jack using the alsa driver, but i don't truly understand the relationship between pulseaudio and alsa.
View 5 Replies View RelatedSo I've used Jack Control for sometime now to control my recording suite that I use (Ardour, Rakarak, and Hydrogen Drum Machine) recently however, when I start the Jack control, as soon as I connect input to output in the connections window, it's like it has internal feedback. The feedback crescendos, then cuts out. after that (let's say I have my Fender plugged into the sound card) if I strike a string there it comes out muddy distorted with an awful echo (some what like what echo would sound like on blown speakers). I have checked all the settings, everything is as it was before when it worked fine... dunno... is Lucid possessed?
View 9 Replies View RelatedI have a Compaq Presario V2000 running Ubuntu 10.04. I use voip to call international mobile numbers. I'm currently using a Netgear router (at a friend's place) and now, my calls cut in 25 seconds. The call time keeps running, but neither can hear each other after 25 seconds. I've tried using service providers like Actionvoip and Jumblo (as they are cheaper than Skype) and clients like Ekiga and Twinkle. Same It happens on both Wi-Fi and ethernet. There is enough credit I tried using my friends Dell Latitude running Windows 7 with my Jumblo account. Surprisingly, it worked perfect!Previously I used a D-Link router and it worked flawlessly with my system.I fail to understand if it is some settings issue or a bug with Netgear's firmware. If anyone else has come across this issue and has been successful in getting around it
View 1 Replies View RelatedThis happens nearly anytime I watch any relatively lengthy flash video on ..... or other online flash players. I watch the video, and the audio is fine for a few seconds, but then the audio cuts off as the video continues to play. Sometimes, when I move the scrollbar of the screen/pause and replay the movie, it starts back up again for a few seconds then shuts off or plays the audio I just heard.

View 1 Replies View RelatedWhen I maximize a window the title border is still there as it should be but the side borders disappear. I do not think that this is an error or abnormal at all I just want to know if there is a way to show the side borders instead of hide them. If there is an option that I missed somewhere or something. The reason I ask is that when I use window previews or super+tab window switcher (do not remember exact name) the windows that are not maximized look great and the ones that are pretty ugly looking.

Or is it just a couple of diagonal lines that people like to throw in here and there? I wonder if I'm having a good old X time right now by typing into linuxquestions, but I JUST DON'T KNOW.
View 14 Replies View RelatedIf I remain 'connected' (with the KVM) to the linux machine the gnome screen saver cuts in and the system remains 'as is' until 'woken up' with the mouse or keyboard. However, if I switch to another machine using the KVM, within a short time (maybe even minute or two) the linux machine goes dead. Now it has not crashed, as I can log in from a remote machine and do anything I need from a terminal, but the machine seems not to respond. I can't even use ctrl-alt-fn to switch to a console screen.
I initially tried entering telinit 3 from a remote machine but it made no apparent difference. However, if after telinit 3 I then killed the Xorg process and later issued a telinit 5 the X server restarted, but with a curious black 'notch' at the top of the screen. I am using an NVIDIA GeForce 7600 GS graphics card. I am now adding the backtrace from Xorg.0.log. It seems that when the KVM switches to another machine for more than a very short time the X server crashes.

I recently bought a set of 2.1 speakers, all is fine. I like to listen to my DAB radio through them. When I boot up, (runlevel 3), sound is there via the mic/line-in jack, but as soon as KDE starts, the sound cuts. I can get it back by:~>alsamixerand then F6 and then scroll to mic, switching to ON and slider up to full and then mic boost up to 65% or so.Can I tell something in KDE to default to mic/line-in on?kmix does not give the full picture I see in other's posts, like here:ImageShack® - Online Photo and Video Hostingjust a single slider under each tab, like this:
