General :: That 'X' Thing It's "too Short To Be Included In An LQ Search"?
Jan 13, 2010
Damned elusive that's what it is.I keep coming across "When you're working in an X environment..." etc etc.But Wiki just drops a tautology like 'when you start x you're in x session' or something.Does it matter, does it have a meaning? Or is it just a couple of diagonal lines that people like to throw in here and there? I wonder if I'm having a good old X time right now by typing into linuxquestions, but I JUST DON'T KNOW.

For our class project we are going to use HyperTerminal to communicate to something we are building that is attached to our laptops using USB. We're supposed to use HyperTerminal.URL...I can't believe that a program that does the same thing doesn't exist in Linux. What programs that can do the same thing are available in Linux and Mac OSX?

I know in windows, there are such files that even if you don't have the original, the link is still in place, and you can at least get a thumbnail. My computer crashed with my camera card in it, and...partially restored my camera card? So, the pictures I took last night, have hodgepodged with other files, making them useless. The only possible backup I have for these pictures is any kind of history file ubuntu 10.02 may have made while I viewed them off the card.

Yesterday I had a huge amount of updates, including things like the Kernel, Mesa, and video driver (xf86-video-ati). Now my monitors are all messed up! When I booted, I found that the characters are much smaller and higher resolution in command line mode.
Then when I started X, my two monitors are swapped! The taskbar is on the right, secondary monitor, and I move the mouse off the right edge of the right monitor into the left edge of the left monitor.

what directories/files should be backed up? What are you using for this job?Basic backup: /home, /etc maybe /root and /boot and often you want to backup some parts of /var such as /var/log. I can use cp and scp for simplest backup. tar, cpio for tape etc... I can use dump and restore for whole file system backup. rsync for incremental backup.

I'm trying to crawl a directory on a website and basically download everything in it. The structure is simple enough(but there are also multiple folders), but there is one thing that makes wget choke up.Both of the links work, but they are both the same thing. So wget will download the same file twice. How can I make wget ignore the first one? but this doesn't seem to actually do anything. It will still download the duplicate URLs

I did something stupid; I think while creating some new short+keys for the terminal, I must have enabled an unknown feature to me. The keypad now acts like a mouse. For example; With NumLock on, I press 7 the mouse goes north+west. I press 6 the mouse pointer goes east.

I was hoping that there may be a place where I can get a complete list of every application that is included in the Anaconda installer.I want to use it so that I can develop a matrix with my CTO to determine which apps we should install. I've searched for this on Google and other search engines without success.

I think this might be related to the changes to using udev or DeviceKit. It started when I was running the beta versions of F12. Then it crept into Debian Sid. And my Arch Testing and Gentoo also suffer from the same.
What happens is that I'll be working along. Then when I press any key it is as if the SHIFT key is pressed. When I press CAPSLOCK, some of the keys react as they would normally. This never lasts for more than 5 minutes. And seems to happen infrequently. I say seems because there are the times I am at work and it could be that the same thing is happening only there is no one on the keyboard.
The reason I pick out udev/DeviceKit is that when it used to happen to F12 beta, the other distros had not yet made the move. So back then it was only a F12 issue. Now it is happening across the board. And only started recently.

I recently ordered a vServer with Debian Etch on it and now i kind of desperate because vncpasswd just won't work. When running it, it says:Code:Password too short
The Problem is: I can't even enter one. It just prints this line and exits. What I also noticed was that after this happened I can no longer open man pages until the next reboot, as it says:
Code:
man: command exited with status 256: /usr/bin/zsoelim /tmp/zmaneFTrCR | /usr/bin/tbl | /usr/bin/nroff -mandoc -rLL=195n -rLT=195n -Tascii | /usr/bin/pager -s

Write a short script that tells you whether the permissions for two files, whose names are given as arguments to the script, are identical. If the permissions for the two files are identical, output the common permission field. Otherwise, output each filename followed by its permission field

i guess this is an installation issue as i am newish to Linux and got a F14 laptop from a used/refurb store... Anyway it seem i have difficulty with getting GTK running or maybe it is WGET...?
i did manage to install apt-get and was able to run synaptics ... but now whenever i try to run synaptics it flashes the interface and crashes. i tried apt-get search wget and it says invalid operation search. i tried apt cache wget and get a crash box in the upper right corner... i tried apt-get gtk+extra-2.1.2-4.fc14 and it says invalid operation gtk...
All of which is frustrating my attempts to get the GTK interface to J working. Their script uses WGET which i also cannot get.

I am supposed to take some small files, and print them to a specific printer, such that the small files are concatenated into one file. The file name has to be included in the file that gets printed.
Should I be looking to concatenate the files into one file with the file names included, and then print them?
something like: -printfunction -printername < file*

Does anyone know how to delete that virtual CD thing that is built into WD harddrives? Nothing I've tried works and I can't find anything about it online. If it can't be deleted, can it at least be disabled so that I don't have to look at the cd icon every time I plug in the hd?

Having been given a P4 computer "not running fast" had xp on it.I decided that the time had come to improve on Microsoft so I added an extra 1gb ram downloaded ubuntu, burn off a cd and set to work loading this computer with Ubuntu
Try 1 failed, boot of disk but stalled
Try 2 failed boot off disk but full of errors.
Try 3 from within windows, yes we have Ubuntu dual boot with a fresh install of XP, looking good took it off the work bench and plugged into my KVM system. Reboot.Err where is {Ubuntu} bit like a rabbit and hopped off the drive
Try 4 Boot up from inside windows only this time a full reformat and full install of "Bunny" {well it has hopped off once} so from now on, I shall call ubuntu Bugs after bugs bunny that well known cartoon fool. (What's up Doc)
Low and behold I now have a fully ? no! a working version of Bugs now running.Test it on U-tube, download install plug-in all working, let the kids now on it to try it out.Yip, bebo , facebook run A OK, and the built-in sound card works, great I can play a bit of music. At this point things start to fall apart.Rhythm-box, it will not play any of my mp3 files that I put on the hhd, it tells me but I downloaded the whole CD from Ubuntu web site. And when I try other things to download to play music I get the following message or same as.Now the last thing I want to learn is a complete new language. If bugs can not play standard mp3 files like every man and his dog has, what is the point in having a poor rated file player.

After pissing around with Kubuntu all evening, I wish I had hair to pull out in screaming frustration. After trying everything from Xbindkeys to animal sacrifices and voodoo spells to get my multimedia keys working, I now find that both the Windows key and the End key are mapped as F14. Problem is that it's the End key opening the K Menu, not the Windows key.
How can two keys get mapped as the same thing?! And how do I get the End key back to just the End key? I'm close to calling it quits on Linux and putting Windows back on my laptop.

Ok I have gone through a week of trying to get flash downloaded. I finally did. I went on the fastest thing I could to make sure it worked which was omegle... the video worked and that meant flash 10 was installed now. But whenever I go onto something that requires flash like a video or game then it doesn't work.
