I'm having a problem with the terminal. When I type it only shows the bottom half of the letters. When I highlight what I typed or when I resize the window, it then shows both top and bottom half. So, basically I can't read what I'm typing until I go back and re-highlight it. I don't know if this is relevant but I'm using ubuntu 9.10 and I have an Nvidia graphics card.
View 5 RepliesWhen the opening little music plays during start up, the first half of it is loud, but halfway through, the sound cuts to about half volume. Everything else afterwards is also very quiet. After boosting the volume output to 150%, and boosting VLC's audio output to 200%, the audio is still barely audible on my laptop. I've gone into alsamixer, and it's at max. I once found how to reset the audio card, and the sound was normal again, but only until I shut the laptop off, and next time, it was the same as always.
I'm on Ubuntu 9.10, and using an old Toshiba Satellite laptop. Don't know what my sound card is.
I use the default Inkscape 0.48.5 r10040 on the default 32 bit Debian Jessie with Gnome 3.14.1 and since I installed it I can't apply some font cuts which actually do work in other applications and did work on previous versions of Debian/Inkscape.
The cuts do show up as options in the "font/style" selection menu and i can use different versions from for example "Roboto" but if I - for example - select to use the "Semi-Light" variant of Roboto it just doesn't get applied after all. (I know that many fonts do not have any font variations and Inkscape confusingly just shows at least "italic" and "bold" as options in the style list anyway.) In this case the font variant is actually there, I can use the same font variants in Gimp and I was able to use it in previous versions of Debian/Inkscape, but not now.But I noticed instabilities in Gimp, Inkscape and Scribus lately. Gimp just consistatly vanishes when I try to scroll through the font selection menu and Scribus takes ages to load and does crush from time to time without any clear pattern to me. I don't think this is caused by Roboto itself since I used it in the past without such problems.
Should I remove all custom fonts and try if everything works ok again or does this approach sound rather foolish to you? Unfortunately I need most of the additional fonts I installed for different projects and I had them on my system in the past also without having such issues. I could however remove all custom fonts and include only those absolutely needed one by one ...
I installed Ubuntu on my Netbook. I like it to use the Terminals. I don't mean the "GUI-Terminal-Emulators", I mean those I can open with "Alt+FX". There the font size is to big, so I changed it with "dpkg-reconfigure console-setup". It worked, but after restart the font were "reseted" and big. Is there a way to permanently change the font size?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm running GNOME (gnome-session under xmonad). I want to turn off antialiasing (i.e. use monochrome mode) for fonts in gnome-terminal. But I want to retain antialiasing for other applications, like Firefox. Is this possible?
Antialiasing is great and almost necessary for using Firefox or Chrome. But it makes the fonts in gnome-terminal blurry at sizes around 12 or smaller.
Otherwise, I'll just have to use xterm, which seems not to anti-alias its fonts under any circumstances.
I have a ubuntu linux working in TEXT mode. I would like the change the font size (or if possible, get my terminal with inconsolata font). How can i do it?
PS: i don't have a GUI or X Windows running.

I just upgraded from 9.04 to 10.04 and so far I have those problems:
1. Before, everything in my system was in English. Now, half is in English, half in another language (PCManFM, some menus etc). I tried setting up Language Support but it changes nothing.
2. Cursor themes work only when hovering the mouse over "X" buttons in the right top corner of the window. As soon as I move the mouse somewhere else, it goes back to default cursor theme, even though I tried selecting 5 different themes - same result.
4. Hibernation don't work anymore. s2disk saves image to disk and then it resumes it but computer stops on text message along the lines of "Resume completed successfully".
5. Changing volume with keyboard shotcuts no longer works.
6. Smplayer does not display picture anymore when playing movies. The view is just empty. I can only hear the soundtrack. It is using XV filter.
7. PCmanFM that used to worked flawlessly, now after going into 1 or 2 subdirectories stops reacting to clicks on file/folder list. Need to open new instance to be able to do anything and this again would become unusable after visiting 1-2 folders.
I'm not sure if this is the right place for this. I'm not sure which veraion of linux I have but it was the latest veraon bfor the recent update. I accidentally hit alt ctrl f11 and my comp went inyo the grub menu. I've tried startx and it does nothing. About half the commands I enter do nothing and the other half r not found or are incorrect. The only vommand thw actualley work is reboot. I searched for this and read a grub guide but it did no good.

Most of my work happens in a terminal, so I need a clear, readable font. I've settled a while ago on Terminus [URL]..., which works wonders for me. I added XTerm*faceName : Terminus in my ~/.Xdefaults, and I do get the Terminus font. Unfortunately, a lot of Unicode glyphs are missing (mathematical symbols, greek and hebrew letters), displaying as little square blocks instead.
If I remove the faceName entry, the default configuration seems able to display most of the glyphs (including math, greek, hebrew, runic, and whatever else), but the default font is much harder to read.
A google search hints that it should be possible to use Terminus as the default font, and fallback to (an)other one(s) for missing glyphs, but provides no further explanation. I've seen documentation that recommends Bitstream Vera Sans as a fallback, but it lacks the glyphs I need too; I don't know how to identify the default font used by xterm either, I had a look at /usr/share/X11/app-defaults/XTerm, but all I can find are generic references to old pre-fontconfig font names.
Using Gentoo Linux, fontconfig and xterm are up to date, USEs trutype and unicode enabled, X.Org server 1.6.
Edit: I alternate between Ratpoison, Awesome and XMonad, without a desktop environment.
I am pure newbie with Ubuntu, Good riddance from Windows 7. I am no way near to anything related to programming yet I wanted to see this world of freeware.

Please suggest good font package and how to install them and where to get them. Also please let me know where to find all the treasure to make my desktop more funky and how to install them using terminal or if there is easier way.
I am running Ubuntu 10.04. When I first installed it, the virtual terminals had a good font size. After a few weeks, I set the visual appearance setting to normal (in the gui desktop). Doing this required me to install third party graphics drivers from nvidia. in installed fine, and my gui desktop still functions as I would expect, however, all of the virtual terminals now have a much larger font size, as does the ubuntu boot logo.

View 1 Replies View RelatedSee the pic. It happens in both Yakuake and Konsole. I am using inconsolita size 13, but the problem occurs irrespective of size.
I think it's only the bolded text which gets cutoff, but I am not sure. This problem is especially bad when writing something using nano or vim.
Just tried it with DejaVu Sans Mono, and the problem disappears. Weird. I would still like a solution, if you know anything, I am somewhat picky about inconsolita.
I'm very accustomed to using gnome-terminal. Today, out of the blue, the text that shows the things like menu options is extremely small (not readable) (please see screenshot 1).
This is also the case for my favorite text editor gedit (see screenshot 2)
Does anyone know what is causing this and how I can fix it?
I know how to manipulate the size of the text IN the gnome terminal window [from usage: --zoom=ZOOMFACTOR Set the terminal's zoom factor (1.0 = normal size)] but my problem is with the text of the menu options AND --more importantly-- also of the content of gedit text editor.
I've just installed openSUSE 11.3 on a workstation in my office and am having trouble with the font in the terminal window. It appears very blocky and some of the letters run into each other, regardless of font chosen. Here is a pic of the issue: Has anyone any ideas as to what is going wrong? I've gone through the 'Preferences' on the terminal window but nothing I change helps.

I did use this system to view gotomeeting.com yesterday. Oh yea and installed flash from netstat shows an open connection to 74.51.103.39:80.

I installed Slack to a new partition created in the free space of my hard drive, and I thik this was my mistake: I let Slack automatically configure the MBR with lilo (can't remember - I should stop operating on the MBR at 4 AM.) Now Slack runs just fine, but upon bootup I would like to be able to boot either Debian or Slack, but instead I just have a Slack splash and the only option is to press enter to boot Slack.

I believe sda1 is the root directory of my Debian install.

In the above table, sda10 is the swap I created for Slack and sda3 is the root directory for Slack. All other partitions were there before (my initial Debian install).
Thus my partitions are apparently intact and visible by the MBR (is it correct that the MBR holds the list of partitions on a disk?) but for some reason I don't have the option to boot Debian at all - just Slack.
I have a feeling this is a LILO/GRUB issue, but I don't know where to start.
EDIT: more poking around seems to reveal that it is the configuration of LILO that is the problem. Observe the following output:

I would like to split my display in two, so they would behave like two physical monitors, i.e. it would be for example like to connecting two 960x1080 monitors through physical ports. Is something like this possible? The problem is i would like to run two fullscreen applications on second monitor. Is that even possible? I prefer Windows 7/vista but I welcome Linux solution as well
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a pretty decent DSL connection that usually gave me about 105KB/second download speed over wifi. The "official" download speed was 1.5 megabits so I should have been getting a bit more, but that's not my question.
I recently switched to Mint from Ubuntu. Now my download speed is significantly slower, to the tune of 45 KB/second. Since the connection runs at normal speed when I connect via an ethernet cable, my guess is that mint doesn't give enough power to the wifi card. Is there any way I can fix that?
I can't change fonts in Firefox preferences (Content).

Any type and size of font I use, nothing happens. It's still same font which I choose for the first time I've started Firefox afer installing openSUSE 11.3.
I downloaded some software yesterday from the ubuntu rep. This morning my screen has the bottom part of in black there are the KDE docky ,firefox ,terminal & rhythmbox icons ,so is the taskbar..but the wallpaper is cut up ,4cm off. I have noticed that the splash screens res has changed too. It's sharper (smaller). The browser as a consequence is also half lit & having noscript in the bottom without it being visible is a problem. Why has this happened & how can I fix it. The last working config, well that's somewhere else.
View 3 Replies View RelatedJust got Linux ubuntu 10.10 last week installed it and looks pretty nice. I was having problems with the wifi cutting in and out with my windows xp laptop. Wasn't sure why. I am connected via ad-hoc connection. I re-checked all the numbers and everything is ok there. Downloaded all the updates for via ubuntu update manager and it says I have Ubuntu 11.01, Don't know why that is? I have an Acer Aspire model 3680 computer. Anything I need to look for or check in the future to fix the wifi problem?
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have just noticed a nice feature in Windows 7 - when you drag a window to the edge of the screen (the mouse pointer must touch the edge), windows offers you to resize the window to exactly half of the screen size. This is actually very handy on the wide screen monitors.

I'm having a slight problem with firefox in ubuntu 10.04. I'm using my (lenovo ideapad y70) laptop with a VGA connected monitor (LED-LCD TV; Vizio), and for some reason when I maximize a window, the 'x' and scroll bar on the right side are cut off. I have the dual monitor situation set up with the resolutions on the recommend levels (1920*1080 and 1400*900) and I honestly have no idea what the problem is, because I've been using the exact same setup since Lucid Lynx was officially released and it worked fine.
Today I just turned it on after being gone for the weekend, and the window was like this. Doesn't quite make sense to me. The only I changed was perhaps downloaded the updates from the update manager... but I doubt that would affect anything. Oh also, another thing I should add would be that when I was gone I left the TV in my apartment and took the laptop, so perhaps switching from dual screens to single screen and back messed it up? Not sure. I would include error output, but there arent really any errors, I think its just some sort of problem with the resolution.
