Ubuntu :: CCTV SuperDVR Home Security Camera Install?

Dec 13, 2010

Has anyone gotten a DVR card to work with Zoneminder? I have a chinese DVR card in a Windows Box running 8 Cameras on software called SuperDVR. It seems all of these camera cards are the same, some made by Avermedia, or QSee. My card actually came with SuperDVR software that didn't work properly, the documentation was obviously bad chinese translation and I had a really tough time getting it to work on the Windows box initially. Finally I found that it just won't work with Windows 7 or 64 bit, so I reinstaled WinXP 32 bit onto the box and found an upgraded SuperDVR software on the QSee camera driver website. I've started using Ubuntu exclusively and would love to make the switch to Ubuntu for my Camera box. I'm wondering if Ubuntu will recognize the camera card. It's basically a TV tuner card, has 2 plugs that allow BNC pigtails to be input.

I was even thinking maybe running Virtual Box ontop of Ubuntu and run the DVR in Virtual XP. I'd really like to take advantage of the 64 bit hardware, so I was thinking about running Ubuntu Server 10.10 64 bit on this machine, is that a bad idea?

General :: Get Camera Not To Mount As A Filesystem On Connection?

Jul 11, 2011

I have an old Intel webcam that doubles as a standalone digital camera. When I plug it in, Fedora automatically mounts the memory for the camera as a filesystem. However, because it is old and clunky, if I try to use its webcam functionality after this happens, it crashes internally and nothing ever happens.Even if I unmount the memory, still remains "crashed".I know that if the memory was never accessed, the webcam would work, as this is how it is on Windows, and also how it was in a previous release of Fedora, which didn't automount

General :: Copy Pictures From Kodak Digital Camera?

May 2, 2010

I have overlooked some very important tools that would give me the information I'm looking for. What I'm trying to do is -

Plug in a USB camera
find /dev/camera-pseudonym
mount /dev/camera-pseudonym /camera
cp * ~/pictures
umount /dev/camera-pseudonym

and then work on adding this camera to /etc/fstab so that it will automatically mount to the usual place. I don't know how to find the pseudonym. I can, lsusb and see Bus 004 Device 009: ID 040a:05c1 Kodak Co. Digital Camera I can fdisk -l and not see any new partitions (which, with most USB devices with storage, I can usually see the partition listed in fdisk -l) After these two commands related to search FOR the pseudonym, I draw a blank and resort to manually searching /dev for things that may be useful.

This is difficult, though, because there are dozens of files named usb-something, and they're all very similar to one another, and not related to typical pseudonyms I'm used to (like /dev/usb[0-9], /dev/sd[a-z], etc) I would like to be able to find the /dev entry based on the ID 040a:05c1 because every USB devices I've tried has been listed by lsusb, and is accompanied by an ID number. How do I find the pseudonym in /dev for any usb device?

General :: Photo Manager To Import From Scanner Or Camera

Feb 12, 2011

I need to be able to open a photo manager and scan directly from within the program without opening a separate app. Is there one that does? I just installed Mint on my daughters laptop. Wow! I'm impressed. I tried a some Linux distros a few years ago and although I liked the idea, I just couldn't find one that impressed me. Things have changed since then! I tried 2 or 3 distros this past week and they all beat the pants off any version of Win... that I've used. I'm so impressed that I am now considering installing on my machine if I can find software replacements. If not, I may still do it and run Virtualbox when I need to. I need to start with the photo manager.

General :: How To Automatically Show USB Camera Or Memory Stick Contents In Icewm?

Mar 12, 2011

I normally use a very lightweight Linux setup. No desktop like Gnome or KDE, just Icewm as the windows manager and nothing else that normal users might consider essential. Well, I do need a file manager - I use Thunar.

Recently I've been trying Gnome. Whenever I shove a memory stick into a USB port, or connect my digital camera, it can automatically pop up a file manager showing all the goodies on that device. KDE does this too. I like this. Although quick at the command line, I like not having to go sudo to mount the device and all that.

If I want to stick with a lightweight setup using Icewm+Thunar, is there something non-huge I can install to make external devices fire up a Thunar window, or otherwise make access to the contents brainlessly easy?

Debian :: OS Does Not See Digital Camera Via USB

Mar 20, 2010

We've got one of those fancy, modern digital cameras and it's great for taking pictures, but I'd love to back those pictures up, too. When I connect the camera via its USB cable to my computer, the OS just doesn't "see" the camera/connection. Nothing shows up in fdisk -l. However, when I connect my mobile phone or USB HD via the same port, they show up in fdisk and can be mounted without any problem. The scary thing is that on my partner's laptop, running gNewSense (with Gnome), it (auto)mounts without any problems. The camera is a NIkon Coolpix L20 with an SD card.
