Winxp and Win7 - conencting to a Samba server.
Everything is working fine except for one thing .
To best explain this problem .........
Share name - "admin-public"
Everyone can access it.
Everyone can create new docs and edit / save them.
BUT - only the originator can edit / save.
Everyone else has read only access!
How can I set permissions for users within the share?
Example: I have a share called Programming and some user can create folders within it most others can not, can read the documents.
How do I set permissions?
want to made 2 users in samba by which windows machine we access share, say user1 has read,execute permission, user2 has read write delete update full permission. we have done user1 configuration as premia user. we need your guideline for user2

I have configure few folders access by 3 users, In common folder only users that create that document can do changes. The rest of the users can only read the file but can not do changes. Ownership of the folder is admin, group is sambashare which already have the access create and delete files. All the 3 users already in sambashare main group, and they only can edit the file that they copy or create to the common folder .........

View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been reading for a while about samba but I haven't found a solution to my problem yet.I'd like to know if, the configuration I have in mind, is possible at all ("security = user" is what I'm using now).I want a directory to be:
1) read only for guests and some UNIX users;
2) write for some other UNIX users.
The advantage of this configuration would be that every single user in my LAN (with or without a UNIX account) would be able to read the content of the shared directory Music and I (UNIX user andrea) could manage the folder directly trough samba preserving the correct owner/group and permissions on the new files/folder created.
Notes about my configuration above:
1) as it is now every user gets authenticated by samba as nobody so even I (andrea) cannot write in it;
2) commenting out the line "guest ok = yes" I can authenticate as "andrea" and write in it but guest access is not possible any longer.
I have Ubuntu server 10.04 joined to a domain using Likewise Open. I can login using my domain credentials and have added my domain account to the sudoers file. Now that I've got it joined to the domain I want to add some samba shares and have domain members use their accounts to access them. However, no matter what combination of my domain name and the domain user or group I use in the valid users field it won't let me in. What's the proper way of inputting a domain user or group in the valid user field?

I installed samba server on fedora13 last week and share some files from samba server GUI. I also created samba user and password for shared folders but I can't get access samba share folder from neither fedora machine nor Windows XP. When I open samba share from other fedora such as smb://192.168.10.2. I can see share file and when I browse folder, password required box is appeared but after I put samba username and password. The Error message is Unable to mount location Failed to mount Windows share. Even when I browsed samba share from windows xp.
Error message is \192.168.10.2smbshare is not accessible. You might not persioon to use this network resource. Contact the administrator. The network path was not found. How can I get access samba share from both fedora and XP that is what I installed on server:

Is there any way to limit x number of samba users by samba ? Say if there are already 5 samba users using the share, I would like to restrict any futher samba requests.. How do i do that ?

It is also possible to have more than one display connected to a single computer. Is it possible to have one multi-core computer be used simultaneously by two users in their own accounts? View 6 Replies View RelatedWe have set up a dedicated server with Centos5.4(Kernel 2.6.18-164.el5PAE). In this we have mounted a external storage device above 1 Tb. And also we have shared this storage device in samba share.
Sometime when we access this large storage in windows machine the server hangs and we were pushed to restart the server. Past few days it often happens. How to break down this issue and is there some thing that we have to look in specific area to avoid this?
When I try to add a user to samba (using the GNOME UI) in F12, after enter all the information and click OK.it will just hang for about 20 seconds, and then do nothing. Window is still there, I click OK again and same thing.heres the steps i followed:
1) click preferences, Samba Users...
2) click add user
3) select user "joe" (example) from drop down of users
4) enter "joe" windows user name
5) enter password for joe (same as user password)
6) click OK
7) hangs 20 seconds then nothing.window is still there.click OK again same thing no user added
I work as an system administrator for AIX and Linux servers. We have an FTP server running in Linux which has shared folders to Windows domain using Samba. The new requirement is to map users created to Linux machine to Windows users in such a way that, when a user logins into Windows machine with an ID say "X123" in domain "TEST", his access control to the samba shares should reflect based on the same user ID created in Linux machine.(FYI. Both the Windows and LINUX machines are in same network and domain). Please let me know the step by step procedure to configure Linux machine (smb.conf entries or any new file to be created for user mapping) to identify Windows user Login and provide access restrictions accordingly.

I didn't have PCLinuxOS2010 KDE installed long enough to experience it so I don't know if it's a property of Linux or part of Gnome.I have two users, both myself and my wife, and I noticed thatn I mount an internal SATA drive I can only see/access it under the user that mounted it. In order for the other user to see it I need to un-mount the drive. Drive is a 1TB SATA formatted NTFS.I can't imagine this is normal and the 2nd drive is shared for pics/data/etc. Strange quirk is that my install is on a partitioned primary drive, 320gb, that also has Windows on it so the OS must access the drive in order to boot - both users can see the mounted 215gb Windows NTFS partition simultaneously.Is there a setting that needs to be changed or is this normal?

This seems straight forward enough to me. I've just asked it on #linux at irc.freenode.net but when we tried it became apparent that no one there could tell me how it was done.
At my office we are having a samba sever, staff will access their respective folder from their Windows XP systems. I wish to track all user access activity like file creation, modification, deletion and etc. I tried smbstatus -v, from the output I am not able to guess what the user done. I am giving some of the results I get please help me or you can suggest best way to get access log.

All of sudden a working SAMBA server not allowing to login and deny permission for users to access it shares. When I check I checked the server directory rights are same, find no changes. and smb.conf is also same. when I checked closely I found the following error.
1. smbd.log show the following messages

I have searched for an hour now with no luck on this issue).Basically my goal is to unmount a CIFS share before networking is killed on shutdown (so there isn't a time consuming hang before the machine is completely shutdown). I have done this before on ArchLinux but as they use a different init system than Fedora I am unknowledgeable.I also use NetworkManager + Gnome if that helps with anything

I like this version of Fedora, it's clean & simple. But i'm having few problems as well. I want to share some folder of my fedora machine with a windows machine of my home, so that my younger brother can access those folders from his windows machine & copy files to his computer. for this i need to setup samba, i already install samba related packages. but can't start system-config-samba from Application Menu. I'm relatively new to liunx and I have recently installed Fedora 9 to act as a media server. I thought everything was going well until I tried to connect to my Samba share but could not.Not sure what the netbios is but I believe this can be anything I want?So as far as I can tell, the laptop can see the Samba Share, Fedora can see it's own Samba share but nothing (both laptops XP and Vista or the Media Player) can connect to the /public folder..I don't login to either Laptop with a user account, so I believe I do not have to create a user.
