General :: Windows 7 - Can Two Users Simultaneously Share One Pc

Feb 9, 2010

It's easy to have multiple user accounts on one computer and even switch between accounts without logging off. It is also possible to have more than one display connected to a single computer. Is it possible to have one multi-core computer be used simultaneously by two users in their own accounts? Is there specific hardware required (to allow keyboard and mouse distinction for each user) and software configuration?

I know you can setup remote connections on windows that allow you to open and use a second user account without bothering the first user, but how about working locally on the same machine, essentially removing the network delay of remote desktops? What OS supports this? Linux Ubuntu? Windows 7?

General :: Windows - Resize An Image To Multiple Resolutions Simultaneously?

Aug 22, 2011

I am looking for software (Windows or Linux) that can do the following: Resize one image to several provided sizes. Detects the type of the picture (wide, normal) and does the resize based on that. What I mean by that is that it should not break the image by shrinking it more in one direction then in the other so it looks weird. The purpose of this is my Blog. If I want to give my readers a wallpaper, I want to give them several options for the sizes so they can have it in their own preferred screen resolution. The image must however keep its original aspect ratio.

General :: Mounting Restricted Share For All Users?

Jan 25, 2010

I have a NAS on which I created a share with CIFS that has restricted access (that is: you need a username and password to access it). The reason is that I don't want any user in the network to mount this share. On one computer I have Bacula installed to run backups. I would Bacula to store the backups on the NAS share. So I mount the share in fstab. Works fine but the share directory is not read+write for all users but only for the root (since the mount was done for the root). The line in fstab:\readynasackup /readynas cifs user,rw,password=thePassword,username=bacula,umask=017 0 0How can I have Bacula (running as user Bacula) get read+write access to the directory representing the share?I tried to remove access control to the share but the directory representing the mount remains readonly...

General :: Both Users Unable To Share Mounted Drive?

Aug 18, 2010

Noticed this in both Ubuntu 10.04 & now Mint 9, both Gnome. I didn't have PCLinuxOS2010 KDE installed long enough to experience it so I don't know if it's a property of Linux or part of Gnome.I have two users, both myself and my wife, and I noticed thatn I mount an internal SATA drive I can only see/access it under the user that mounted it. In order for the other user to see it I need to un-mount the drive. Drive is a 1TB SATA formatted NTFS.I can't imagine this is normal and the 2nd drive is shared for pics/data/etc. Strange quirk is that my install is on a partitioned primary drive, 320gb, that also has Windows on it so the OS must access the drive in order to boot - both users can see the mounted 215gb Windows NTFS partition simultaneously. Is there a setting that needs to be changed or is this normal?

OK, I have a very simple question.

Is it possible to share one folder between 2 users with full RW access without sharing every other directory they own outside that folder?

This seems straight forward enough to me. I've just asked it on #linux at irc.freenode.net but when we tried it became apparent that no one there could tell me how it was done.

Fedora Networking :: Mapping Windows Users On Unix Users

Sep 29, 2010

Samba up and running on my pc. pc runs FC12 with kde. A laptop has win vista. The pc can access the shares on the laptop but the laptop has authentication issues to access the pc. Note that windows doesnt enforce authentication forincoming network connections.Using the system-config-samba util i tried to map a windows user to the unix user "feduser". The laptop (named LAPPY) has a user (lapuser) which has on windows no password. What should I tell samba config what the windows username should be? lapuser or LAPPYlapuser doesnt work because when accessing the pc via the laptop, the authentication fails. The only auth that is successful is when choosing the same winusername as the unix username.

Secondary, id like to setup the laptop so that the user doesnt have to provide a name and password, or at least not more then once in the lifetime of the laptop. Note that you cant provide an empty password to system-config-samba. How is that possible?

Strange but not really on issue imho:the samba - KDE control module(kcmshall4) (and the smb.conf) shows 2 shares: the homedirs and the data dir the samba server configurator (system-config-samba) shows only the datadir.

General :: Permissions On A Windows Share

Mar 31, 2011

It seems that by default a Windows share mounted at /mnt/Windows/ will be owned by root and have 755 permissions set on all files. I usually do a chown or chmod to allow my user to have write access to these files. Does that affect the Windows files in any way? It takes quite some time to complete the chown/chmod when there's a lot of data. Where is the Linux permission data kept for the Windows share? On the Linux computer where I set the permissions? I just want to get a better understanding how this works.

General :: Rsync A Share On A Windows Box

Feb 11, 2010

I've figured out about half of the problem this time. I've duplicated the directory structure of the Windows machine on the Linux server.

I then proceed with mounting the Windows share on the Linux server. I type the mount command while I'm in Folder1 on the Linux server:

Code:

So far so good. Now I need to rsync and the command for this is

Code:

But what do I fill in here? I'm guessing path/to/dst is just plain Folder1 on the Linux box. Path/to/src refers to the share on the Windows machine but since I've mounted that share, is path to source = path to destination?

General :: Users Without Prior Contact With MS Windows?

Feb 3, 2010

It was always why did You switch from there or that. I wonder are there (or better yet here actually) Linux users, that where never 'tainted' with the proprietary infamous operating system? I mean those who never *switched*, but had either both or saw Linux first (before MS Windows).

How do they perceive Linux? We , the ones coming from <put whatever You come from here> , are inevitably biased, carry a background noise and a "whistle" fading in our ears. I know computers from the days they came without operating system (just mere interpreters upon a BIOS stack) and really do appreciate the ways of *NIX. But I see my kids growing and exploring all kinds of "solutions" and OS-es and they have mixed feelings:

1. They are not bothered if software "looks" alike if it is functional

2. They like certain features on either sides and miss where they lack

3. They, above all, appreciate functionality

4. They miss gaming support on Linux a lot (big names hesitating)

General :: Connecting To Windows 7 Share Via SMBClient

Apr 4, 2010

I am trying to allow my mother's Acer Aspire One (OS: Linpus Linnux Lite) to print on the WIFI Canon Pixma MP620 printer. The rest of the computers connected in the house run some variant of Windows. The printer has been set up to print wirelessly from the Windows computer. Having searched the internet for hours, I have determined that there aren't any drivers for that particular printer.

My potential solutions are:
1. Buy a new printer
2. Install Windows on the Aspire One (Last resort!)
3. Use this piece of software (http://www.printeranywhere.com/), which is installed on my Windows 7 computer which is on 90% of the time, and find some way to install it on Linux. (I tried Wine, and it opened up the installation .exe but when it came to actually installing, returned an error saying it needed to be installed on the same drive. :S)
4. Follow this tutorial (http://justin.yackoski.name/winp/) to print via my computer.

I think I will manage to follow the tutorial fine (as a complete Linux novice!), but I am having some problem with simply connecting to my Windows share folder, which I came across on this line of the tutorial: Test that you can access the share from the linux PC via smbclient. I.e., run: smbclient //windows_pc/spool -U print and make sure you can put a file into that shared directory. After I enter the password, as prompted, is returns:

session setup failed: SUCCESS - 0

When I try: "smbclient -L //WILL-PC -U Will", and then enter my password as prompted, it returns the same error. However if I try: "smbclient -L //WILL-PC -N", it returns: Anonymous login successful. Then my correct Domain, OS and server details. Then the titles: Sharename, Type and Comment

And then the following:
cli_rpc_pipe_open: cli_nt_create failed on pipe srvsvc to machine WILL-PC. Error was NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Error returning browse list: NT_STATUS_ACCESS_DENIED
Anonymous login successful
Then the same correct Domain, OS and server details
Then two headings: Server and Comment, each of which have a different entry below them to do with my printer.
Then the two headings: Workgroup and Master, below which there are two different workgroups that we have, and my computer and my sisters laptop.
