General :: Both Users Unable To Share Mounted Drive?

Noticed this in both Ubuntu 10.04 & now Mint 9, both Gnome. I didn't have PCLinuxOS2010 KDE installed long enough to experience it so I don't know if it's a property of Linux or part of Gnome.I have two users, both myself and my wife, and I noticed thatn I mount an internal SATA drive I can only see/access it under the user that mounted it. In order for the other user to see it I need to un-mount the drive. Drive is a 1TB SATA formatted NTFS.I can't imagine this is normal and the 2nd drive is shared for pics/data/etc. Strange quirk is that my install is on a partitioned primary drive, 320gb, that also has Windows on it so the OS must access the drive in order to boot - both users can see the mounted 215gb Windows NTFS partition simultaneously.Is there a setting that needs to be changed or is this normal?

so after searching and reading, and searching some more, im stuck. i cant seem to get a mounted thumb drive to give write access. first thing to know is that, im using a seagate dockstar with a primary thumb drive[sda1] booting debian and samba.
i guess you could say im still in the testing phase, just trying to make sure files can be shared, mounted and accessed by users. the problem is stated as the title. i have successfully shared a folder in sda1 with rw access, but i cant do the same for the second drive[sdb1].
for sda1 with rw access, here are the smb.conf settings:

Whenever I right-click on a mounted usb drive, I have the option to "safely remove" it. However, it I choose this option, I inevitably get the following error message:
Unable to stop drive

I'm currently using Lucid, but this happened on Karmic as well. The way I see it, the result I would like would be either:
1. The "safely remove drive" command just unmounts the drive (I can't imagine what else it does anyways, besides give me this stupid error)
2. There is no "safely remove drive" option.

Sorry if this is the wrong section for this type of question. Anyway, I have two servers running Ubuntu 10.04. Server A has an NFS share that is mounted on server B, and the former has this share set up with specific permissions for a group called netusers. This group basically grants its users read/write permissions, and blocking all of files from anyone who's not part of the group.My question is this: how can I set up the permissions on server B, such that if I was to add a new user on server B, he would have read/write access to the share? I tried adding a counterpart group called netusers with the same permissions on B, but that didn't work.

I'm on OS X and mount a network share from my Windows XP machine. Files by default have the rwx (700) permissions. What OS X option I need to change, that the files will have rw (600) permission?
Maybe this question also applies for Linux mounting a Windows network share.

Unable to access linux(ubuntu 10.10) share drive on my windows PCIn my office we have few linux (obuntu 10.10) computers and 3 computers running on windows. We have data stored on one of the shared drives of a linux(ubuntu 10.10) system which has samba installed and we are able to access that folder from other linux systems and 1 windows xp system where it asks for user name and password and is able to access the data while in other 2 windows systems (with 1 having xp and 1 having windows 7) we are unable to access the folder because it does not ask for user name and password and it shows an error network drive not accessible as you may not have the permission.

It's easy to have multiple user accounts on one computer and even switch between accounts without logging off. It is also possible to have more than one display connected to a single computer. Is it possible to have one multi-core computer be used simultaneously by two users in their own accounts? Is there specific hardware required (to allow keyboard and mouse distinction for each user) and software configuration?
I know you can setup remote connections on windows that allow you to open and use a second user account without bothering the first user, but how about working locally on the same machine, essentially removing the network delay of remote desktops? What OS supports this? Linux Ubuntu? Windows 7?

I have a NAS on which I created a share with CIFS that has restricted access (that is: you need a username and password to access it). The reason is that I don't want any user in the network to mount this share.On one computer I have Bacula installed to run backups. I would Bacula to store the backups on the NAS share. So I mount the share in fstab. OK, I have a very simple question.
Is it possible to share one folder between 2 users with full RW access without sharing every other directory they own outside that folder?
This seems straight forward enough to me. I've just asked it on #linux at irc.freenode.net but when we tried it became apparent that no one there could tell me how it was done.

Im not getting able to neither add new users using command useradd nor delete existing users using command userdel. And even Im not getting able to login into any existing users except root. It was ok before. Im having this problem very recently on my linux server. Im using RHEL5.

How do you find the device (e.g. /dev/*) for a mounted USB drive in Linux (Ubuntu 10.04)? I'm trying to format a Cruzer USB flash drive, and when I plug it in, the icon for the mounted filesystem appears on my desktop. However, when I open GParted, it doesn't list the filesystem as an option to partition.
The recommendations I've found through Google include monitoring tail -f /var/log/messages, which they claim should list the device name when the drive is mounted, but this never happens for me. I've also read that the USB drive would usually be linked to /dev/sdb, but this appears as a broken link on my filesystem. How else would I find the device?

I administer a remote server via SSH that runs CentOS 5.5. I have been unsuccessful in all my attempts to write to two different external USB hard drives with a single ext3 partition when logged in as root.
When attempting to create a "test" directory I get one of two messages:

Not putting stock in the odds that I've had two hard drives (different sizes and brands) with the exact same hardware problem, I'm going to assume this is a software issue, although maybe it isn't. My version of linux has a bunch of GUI icons on the left hand side of the screen (vertical). Most are links to programs.You click the GUI icon and the program opens. When I mount my internal hard drive it adds a GUI icon for the drive. The problem is when I click on this new GUI icon it automatically loads K3b and gives an error message instead of giving me a list of what is on my drive. I deleted the program K3b and tried un-mounting then re-mounting the drive. I then tried the new GUI icon for the drive and now it automatically opens Dragon Player.

I've mounted my NAS drive under the /media/ directory. I've copied a bunch of files from my current /var/www directory, using cp -Rpv (preserve). Now I want to do a cp -Rup /var/www/ /media/magneto/testing.cdw/ Based on the fact that these are two different file systems, i.e. one is a networked NAS connected through Samba, and the other is my computers internal drive. Will I run into problems with the date and time? how can I check before I run the copy?

Is there a way to disable disk checks in a mounted usb drive? I have a 500GB usb mounted drive in my CentOS machine and everytime I reboot my system, it does disk checks which is a long painstaking process.

I'm trying to mount a mounted NFS share. I have a server that connects through VPN to a network, that has the NFS share exported. I am able to successfully mount the NFS share on that server, in /media/iSCSI. Now I want to share this NFS share with other servers, that are on the same network as the VPN-ed server, but are not connected to VPN. When I try to export the mounted share, I get:

I'm having a some pretty weird problems with some mounted file share in Ubuntu Server 10.04 LTS. Currently we are mounting several file share stored on a SLES Files Server onto our Ubuntu Web Servers using the CIFs protocol. Occasionally ( no rhyme or reason ) we will find that when you do a directory listing on the mounted share, while you are on the Ubuntu Server, there are no files being listed. Yet if you browse the SLES File Server or any other of the identical Ubuntu Servers (with the same mounts), the files are there ready to go.
Before using SLES for our file server we tried windows, and experience many of the problem you that you see on the forums of CIFs errors on the console screen. I'm beginning to wonder if 1. we can resolve the CIFs problems in Ubuntu 10, or do we need to down grad to Ubuntu 9 or 3.) change to something other than CIFs.

I'm having a problem changing permissions on a network share. The share is mounted on my server using cifs. It has been working perfectly for a week or more. I use a bash script to copy files from a temporary folder on the server to folders on my HTPC that are mounted on my server.The server is Ubuntu Server 10.04 and the HTPC is XBMC Live Dharma.
The problems began when I added chmod lines to my bash script to temporarily change permissions. I had the entire mounted share set to 777 on the server, and I was worried that I might accidentally delete the files or something, so I set it to 555 and then modified my script. This was not intended to be a permanent solution, but I wanted to use it as a band-aid solution until I figured out how to do it properly. The mounted folder is called "tabitha" and it is mounted in the home folder of the user "turvy" on the server.The script looks like this:

I have samba installed. I also have a Windows NTFS disk mounted on Ubuntu. To share the file, I migrate to the folder with the file manager, right click on it and select "Sharing Options". I get the message
'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare add: cannot share path /mnt/Windisk/<path> as we are restricted to only sharing directories we own. Ask the administrator to add the line "usershare owner only = false" to the [global] section of the smb.conf to allow this.
