I am trying to create a link to my windows xp workgroup where all my data is stored (I was surprised that linux could even see it!) I mounted a volume on the desktop apparently... that worked fine until I rebooted and it had disappeared. it was fairly annoying that I had to go back into the network and re-mount the volume. How can I get it to stay put, even after rebooting?
View 6 RepliesI have some large volumes that I don't want to automatically be e2fsck'd when I reboot the server. Is it safe to change maximum mount count to -1 and check interval to 0 while a volume is mounted, or will that cause problems to the file system?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm using BackTrack4 in my office to run a MySql server for internal testing purposes and it's working fairly well till now with 1 inconvenience that it doesn't autostart. Sometimes I have to shutdown the server and after booting again certain parameters like ip address, mounting a separate HDD partition etc. get reset and I have to manually assign IP, mount partition, start required services like Mysql, SSH again.Is there any way to avoid that ? That is, to assign the same network configuration, starting of certain services and auto-mounting the partition?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have v 10.10 running the following (and I still have no idea how I got this all working). Myth, Squeeze server, X10 control system for the house, Virtualbox (where I run some windows stuff) and a general file and print service. It has 5 disk drives attached
1 - system disk
5- external usb to back up data to
2,3,4 - 2 tb drives in a raid config
I just restarted the server and the raid volume has not mounted. I looked in the webmin interface and the device is there but it doesn't seem to have the partitions attached. Again in webmin, the partitions seem to be on each of the drives. I used crash-plan to back up the data and music, but not the video, so I would prefer not to have to rebuild the lot if I don't have to. I really don't want to re build the lot out of my lack of experience with Linux. Is there an easy (ish) way of putting the raid back together to see if it's just dropped its config and the data is in tact (or can be rebuild from two of the three drives).
I shared a few directories using samba which can be detected with XP or OSX over the network. However, when I try mount those folders this error occurs (OSX): 'Volume X could not be mounted'.I checked that smb as wells as xinetd is running and that the firewall ports are open (also tried deactivating the firewall with no success).

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm running 10.04 server on a Mac G5 with 2 network interfaces, one pointing to my network (192.168.0.x) and the other to a local partner network (192.9.100.x) with which we share a network volume to give/take PDF files.My client environment is MAC OS X (from 10.4 to 10.6) and until now only one client (with 2 nics) was connected to that volume: we don't have layer3 switches to do static routes over the two networks, so I decided to use my Ubuntu Server Mac to do this (it's also my new syslog server...).
Nics are configured correctly, and the local share (192.168.0.x) is well seen by everybody.But, when I mount the remote volume (192.9.100.x) to THAT shared folder, nobody is able to connect to the samba share (that now lists the remote volume directory...). The MAC OS X tells "unable to unmount the volume". IP forwarding is also activated on /etc/sysctl.confHere is a part of my smb.conf file

I just got ubuntu installed for the first time, I tried mounting my hard drive to my desktop so i can have easy access to it, but when i restart ubuntu it always dissapears and i have to go to places then click on the hard drive again to mount it to my desktop.
Is there a way of keeping this on the desktop without having to do this all the time? I have the latest ubuntu version.
I tried to change my /home to another partition, but after reboot I get an error saying the disk /home could not be mounted..fstab:Quote:

I have recently installed Debian on my NAS server. I have also configured Samba for sharing the home directory of a nas user i.e. /home/nas To this directory I have read/write from a windows machine using the nas user credentials.
When I mount my RAID partition /dev/md0p1 to the /home/nas directory, I then realize that all content in this directory (files and subfolders) is only owned by the root user. When trying to access from the windows machine the /home/nas directory, I do not have any write access, only read. I have tried both the nas and the root user credentials.
I have also attempted the change the ownership of the mounted RAID partition to the nas user with the -R recursive option, but I get for the internal files/subfolders an error "operation not supported".
How can I overcome this problem?
- Is there something not done properly in the /dev/md0 array definition (i.e. ARRAY /dev/md0 level=raid1 num-devices=2 UUID=bddf8b69:c97967b5:cb104784:7fef7cc3 )?
- Is there something not done properly in the /dev/md0p1 mounting (i.e. mount /dev/md0p1 /home/nas)?
- Should I do any extra configuration before the mounting etc?

I have mounted samba volume and I need to have write permissions for every new folder that's being created (currently, by default, on every newly created folder i have only read and execute permissions).I tried changing umask, but with no effect on mounted folder, umask changed only for local filesystem. I tried mounting with umask option, but with no effect again.I'm using ArchLinux on this machine, and I installed samba using default package manager (pacman).

In Gnome desktop, when I right click and select mount volume, it will display : "Unable to mount location. Internal error: No mount object for mounted volume"
I have an external USB had drive. It is a Buffalo drive. When it is mounted it appears in /Media/Buffalo. The problem is, every time I reboot my system it is mounted to a different location.
e.g. /Media/Buffalo_1
reboot again and it is mounted to /Media/Buffalo_2
The two previous mount points always remain present as empty directories. This is creating problems I need to do away with. I need to work out how to get this to mount to the same directory every time. In opensuse 11.2 with the automount option installed I did not have this problem. It has only appeared since the install of 11.3.
After update 11.2 to 11.4 copy jobs from netware 5.1 volume to local disk linux system does crash after a couple of seconds. I might have to do if there a allot of small files in that job. If happend system reboot is required because unmount netware volume nor delete copied files to the local linux system is not possible. Recompiling ncpfs package not possible because error free source package ncpfs version 2.2.6 might not be availble.

It's been days that I've been with this and I'm getting to the end of my wits.
I tried to create a RAID-5 volume with three identical 1tb drives. I did so, but I couldn't mount the new volume after a reboot. Mdadm --detail told me that of the three drives, two were in use with one as a hot spare. This isn't what I wanted.
So I deleted the volume with the following commands:
mdadm --stop /dev/md0
mdadm --zero-superblock /dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd
mdadm --remove /dev/md0
Then I rebooted the machine, and used fdisk to delete the linux raid partitions and re-write an empty partition table on each of the drives. I rebooted again.
Now I'm trying to start over. I purged mdadm, removed the /etc/mdadm/mdadm.conf file, and now I'm back at square one.
Now for whatever reason I can't change the partition tables on the drives (/dev/sdb /dev/sdc /dev/sdd). When I try to make a new ext3 filesystem on one of the drives, I get this error:
"/dev/sdb1 is apparently in use by the sytem; will not make a filesystem here!"
I think that the system still thinks that mdadm still has some weird control of my drives and won't release them. Never mind that all I want to do even now is just make a RAID-5 volume. I've never had such difficulty before.
The volume keyboard shortcuts on my Asus Eee 1008p resets on reboot.(going back to no shortcut at all). It works for the session, if i set it, but after reboot i have to set it again.

Everything is working perfect... halt, boot, system... but when I wanna to reboot with a command sudo reboot, it hangs at the end of all initialization when it's rebooting and some number. If I remove disk in fstab, than reboot working.
I'm running SUSE 11.3 with gnome (and pulseaudio, which I tried to get rid of, but for me it's just too much hassle to get audio working w/o pulse). The Master volume of my USB headset (2nd soundcard) is reset to 0 after each boot. In order to get it properly working, I have to run the YaST sound module and re-set the Master volume (which always is down to 0). Using alsamixer to do the same doesn't work (alsamixer shows no controls), probably because pulse grabs the device or does something else with it?

Any input on what I can do to make the volume level stick?
I know if I do a shutdown -rF now, it will perform an e2fsck on all my volumes with the -y switch. But if I just want to check one of the volumes rather than all of them, and have it use the -y switch so it will automatically answer yes to everything, how can I do that?I'm using RHEL, and have a huge volume I need to run a check on, and I dont want to sit there for the next 24 hours hitting the Y key every time it finds a problem ;-)
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a file server with two RAID volumes. The one in question is 6 1TB SATA drives in a RAID6 configuration. I recently thought one drive was becoming faulty, so I removed it from the set. After running some stress tests, I determined my underlying problem hadn't cleared up. I added the disk back, which started the resync. Later on, the underlying problem caused another lock up. After a hard-reboot, the array will not start. I'm out of ideas on how to kick this over.

I'm looking for insite on how it might be possible to grow an existingvolume/partition/filesystem while it's in active use, and without having to add additional luns/partitions to do it.For example the best way I can find to do itcurrently, and am using this in production, is you have a system using LVM managing a connected LUN (iSCSI/FC/etc), with a single partition/filesystem residing on it.To grow this filesystem (while it's active) you have to add a new LUN to the existing volume group, and then expand the filesystem. To date I have not found a way to expand a filesystem that is hosted by a single LUN.
For system context, I'm running a 150 TB SAN that has over 300 spindles, to which about 50 servers are connected. It is an equal mix of Linux, Windows, and VMware hosts connected via both FC & iSCSI... With both Windows & VMware, the aforementioned task of expanding a single LUN and having the filesystem expanded is barely a 1 minute operation that "Just Works".If you can find me a sweet way to seamlessly expand a LUN and have a Linuxfilesystem expanded (without reboot/unmount/etc)I have cycles to test out any suggested methods/techniques, and am more than happy to report the results for anyone else interested. I think this is a subject that many people would like to find that magic method to make all our lives much easier

I am trying to connect the one of server RHEL5.4 to the IBM iSCSI storage. Server is equipped with 2 single port Qlogic iSCSI HBA(TOE). RHEL detected the HBA and installed driver itself (qla3XXX). I have configured the HBA ip address in the range of iSCSI host port of storage. Both of the HBA is connecting to the two different controller of storage. I have discovered the storage using command iscsiadm -m discovery command for both of the controller and it went through fine. But problem is whenever server is restarting if both of the hba is connected to the storage then server will not detect the volumes which is mapped to the server and then to detect the volume I need to run "mppBusRescan" and "vgscan" command each time. If only one path is connected it is fine.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a Truecrypt-encrypted Windows [system] partition, that I want to be opened and mounted automatically (using a keyfile) when I log into Debian, since it is also encrypted and I don't want to type two passphrases. It think this could be done with LUKS. With TC I probably have to go with the CLI, but haven't figured it out yet. And I can't add a keyfile to the volume using the GUI. In order to mount the volume I have to tick the Mount partition using system encryption (preboot authentication) checkbox, or otherwise I get Incorrect password or no TrueCrypt volume found. And same when I try to add a keyfile.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIs there a way to default volume to 100% in the terminal with gnome-volume-control-applet or any other program? I am setting up a dedicated Zsnes machine which boots into Fluxbox but the volume is muted by default. There isn't a man page for gnome-volume-control-applet.
When I log into Gnome the volume is set to 100%, but Fluxbox is always set to mute.
I've got my xubuntu 10.10 install just about perfect on a little acer aspire d250, apart from a small sound useability issue: In the interests of simplicity and resource usage I removed pulseaudio. After a bit of fiddling I got it so that my USB soundcard (ProDac) is recognized and automatically set as the default soundcard when plugged in. Any sound applications automatically use the USB sound if it present, no need to around with pulse. The only problem is that my netbook's volume control keys still only control the master volume of the inbuilt soundcard, and have no effect on the usb sound. Does anyone know of a way to change which sound device these keys actually effect? I'd like to write a little script so that when the usb device is detected the keys are remapped.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running Kubuntu 10.10 32 bit on an old DFI KT600AL motherboard based system using the onboard VIA 3058 AC97 audio (because it supports front panel audio connections and none of the add-in PCI soundcards I have do). I have an old Gateway/STB TVPCI TV tuner card (mainly wanted the FM radio part to work) hooked up to the cd audio connector on the motherboard because the digital audio over the pci bus apparently isn't supported for this card (neither is the onboard analog mixer on the tv tuner card, I had to hack a CD-ROM audio cable and solder it to the audio outputs of the tv tuner module on the TV tuner card). When I use the master channel as the master channel (selected in Kmix) then as one would expect it affects the output volume of all other audio playing on the system except that which is being handled by the PCM channel. On Windows the PCM channel was also affected by the "Volume Control" slider such that ALL volume levels were reduced when moving the slider. I'm hoping someone can help me figure out how to make it work like this on Kubuntu.
First off I should warn you that I (like many users of older hardware that is not properly supported under PulseAudio) have uninstalled PulseAudio (because it's garbage) and am using Alsa to manage my audio hardware. I would think that there would be some way to do this using the 'amixer' application to add the PCM channel as a component of the 'Master' channel so that when the volume is turned down using the 'Master' channel control it will affect the PCM channel too (at least the output to the speaker jack, not necessarily the capture or mix volume though), but I'm not really any good at doing things from a terminal window and the options for the amixer command kind of confused me.
