Aug 12, 2010
I am running RHEL 5 on Vmware Workstation. That is i inslled Vmware Workstation on windows 7 and then in Vmware i installed RHEL 5 as a virtal machine. By mistake i made some wrong entry in my /etc/fstab file that is i was trying to automatically mount one folder under another folder. My syntax was wrong. So when i restart my RHEL 5 , at the boot time due to wrong entry in /etc/fstab system is giving file system error as follows:
Checking filesystems
fsck.ext3: Unable to resolve 'LABEL=/home/download'
fsck.ext3: Unable to resolve 'LABEL=/var/ftp/uploads'

I'm having an issue with dual networking on RHEL 5. My initial question is can the order the ethx (0,1) devices are brought up be changed at boot time, so I could bring up eth1 before eth0?
Some background: eth0 is DHCP'd and using DNS, basically this is my primary network. eth1 is an isolated subnet, with a manually configured IP which has no connection to eth0 or the outside world. When I bring up networking it first brings up eth0 and then eth1, what happens is eth1 becomes the 'primary' network of the host and I lose my connection to DNS/NFS/NIS and the outside world.
If I login and manually bring up eth1 first, then eth0 everyone is happy and connections work. So, I'm looking for a solution to either bring up eth1 before eth0 or somehow make eth0 my primary IP and not have it be clobbered by eth1.

I have a Insprion 14R (N4010) and when I hibernate it will usually restore without a problem, but maybe 15% of the time it will reboot while loading. I would like to figure why, since I'd rather not lose anything... My swap space is 5.9GB, I have 4GB RAM (video uses 1gb, so I have 3gb usable)
lspci says
00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Core Processor DRAM Controller (rev 18)
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation Core Processor Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 18)
00:16.0 Communication controller: Intel Corporation 5 Series/3400 Series Chipset HECI Controller (rev 06)
[code]....
I do have the hibernate package installed...

I have had Kubuntu installed for quite some time, I very rarely use it because of my dependanacy on windows but frequently boot up Kubuntu to do updates.A few days ago, I tried to boot Kubuntu and it comes up in command line only, I login but it stays at the command line, no KDE.On the boot list I have Ubuntu 2.6.32-21-generic.I have gotten used to using KDE and now I need to use Linux but am not command line fluent.

I've installed RHEL 5.3 on a Dell Desktop. I don't want to install GRUB to the MBR. Is there a way to boot up RHEL from a floppy?I've installed GRUB on to a floppy but not having much luck starting up RHEL. In the past Slackware has allowed me to startup the kernel from a floppy using LILO. I was hoping that there is way for RHEL too.

shut down my RHEL 4 system with an error still present in the /etc/fstab file. Current symptom: When I now try to boot, everything hangs when "Enabling swap space". Highly likely, the reason is the failure to "Mount local filesystems" in the previous step (i.e. "mount point 0 does not exist" = error due to my incorrect line in the /etc/fstab file).Question: Is there any way that I can still boot my system, such that I can remove the incorrect line in the /etc/fstab file?

trying to triple boot XP, Ubuntu, RHEL 5.4but unable to bring every thing in boot loader.* It loads XP with Ubuntu successfully or XP with RHEL 5.4 but not all the three.* when I install XP followed by Ubuntu then RHEL, I am not having a primary partition to install RHEL. It stops there.* I tried to copy the kernel path of ubuntu from grub.cfg in ubuntu and tried to edit in grub.conf file of rhel and added an entry but it displays in boot loader [start screen where it displays all OS listed] but unable to boot ubuntu [unable to load ubuntu kernel].Current situation reformat all Linux partitions and installed Ubuntu with below partition. installed successful. But rhel not installed due to error.Partition table:
/dev/hda1 > XP [primary patition][can boot and work]
/dev/hda2 > Ubuntu [primary patition][can boot and work]
/dev/hda5 > swap for ubuntu [secondary partition]

Environment:RHEL 5.2 and 5.4 AP x86_64, 2 drives (sda, sdb), installing without optional features like clustering and virtualization. I have tried this for a couple of days now and just can't get it to work. My goal is to take the RHEL 5.2 DVD and RHEL 5.4 DVD and install them on separate drives of the same machine. I want the grub menu to give me a choice. I prefer to understand the steps and choices offered me by the install dialog to do this rather than fiddle with grub.conf. If that is not possible, I will write up the bug.
So far, I just get the the error 13 when trying to start the grub added second OS. I have read elsewhere that "Anaconda frequently recognizes the other operating system and sets up grub so you can boot from either operating system". That would be nice. The install dialog lets me choose a drive to install to. I have figured out that I need to check "review and modify partitioning layout" to enter the advanced grub choices. Do I have it install a boot loader for the 1st OS? Trying to add the 1st OS during the second OS install creates a grub conf with no kernel line in the added boot stanza.

I'm using RHEL 4.6. auditd was set on for run levels 1-5. I changed something (?), now my system won't boot. It hangs on "Starting auditd:". I tried adding "enforcing=0" to GRUB. I tried adding "selinux=0" to GRUB. I tried adding "auditd=0" to GRUB. I've tried them separatly, as well as, in various combinations. I've tried entering "I" to go into interactive mode but, I'm not fast enough to hit that millisecond window. How can I skip/get pass the "Starting auditd:"?

After completing the installation of Fedora-FEL edition, I cant boot from my hard disk. "No bootable device found " error appears.
I have one Windows XP & 2 Linux installation in my disk.
I tried to restore grub using "setup (...)" command.but same error repeats.
Even I cant restore Windows XP using "fxmbr" command in... recovery console .
But I can boot from that drive by "chainloader" command in grub. code...
Running above command in grub terminal boots my hard disk ("hd1" is my "unbootable disk")

I have my system and software and data on my computer on an internal drive. On that system I have Back in Time backup software. I use Back in Time, to backup my data to an external drive.
Question: If my computer dies or my internal drive fails, I have to completely re-install everything including my system and Back in Time. If I want to restore my data from the good external drive, how can I do that with Back in Time? Doesn't it keep the Snapshots info or preferences on my dead drive? Or do I need to point my freshly re-installed Back in Time just to the data drive and it will recognize the snapshots etc. automatically?

In Debian I have installed BIT and can see the USB drive. However, BIT cannot see the old snapshots. I had thought I would be able to restore on the new install.

Am quite new to Ubuntu (10.04) and have recently reinstalled XP. I want to make an image of my windows partition to save time and effort when wanting to restore this. I read the Ubuntu documentation on Drive Imaging [URL]..community/DriveImaging and am wondering if I've done things ok?
I've booted using the Live CD. Windows is on sda1 and is a 50GB partition. I have a hidden ntfs partition on the same hard drive at sda9 of 10GB. The first time I tried this I got an error regarding my output file saying "Not a directory". I'm assuming that was because I hadn't mounted sda9. It also reported an error saying permission denied on sda1. I then mounted sda9
Code:
sudo mount /dev/sda9 /mnt
I then changed to root as I thought not being in that was why I was getting the permissions error.
Code:
sudo -s
I've then done the following;
Code:
dd if=/dev/sda1 bs=1024 | gzip > /mnt/sda1.bin.gz
The terminal window is just showing a flashing cursor in the bottom left corner under the above command line input. Is the fact that my mount partition being smaller than my windows partition going to cause a problem or will gzip solve that? My Windows install occupies about 7.5GB of the 50GB partion.
I'm not sure if dd is just taking a long time to complete the task???

I am struggling to understand where PackageKit is launched from at boot time (fedora FC13), and I'm starting to suspect that - since my previous experiences with much older Linux distros - in modern systems daemons/services/programs are launched at boot time from many other different points. In my case, I can't find an origin point for this program in /etc/rc5.d Where can I find a list of places to look into?
