Fedora Installation :: Grub Loader Hangs With Blank Screen?
Jan 25, 2010I installed fedora 12 to a 4GB flash usb flash drive. When I reboot and select windowsxp, grub displays a blank screen and hangs up.

General :: Meanings Of /usr/sbin, /usr/local/sbin And /usr/local/bin ?
Aug 19, 2011Let's get clear with all bin and sbin folders(from filesystem hierarchy standard):
So the question is: Why there are so many directories and what are the meanings of /usr/sbin, /usr/local/sbin and /usr/local/bin?
Many programs are distributed through archives and we have to build them from source code. Usually they have makefile so it's quite easy. This process involves creating files in usr/local/lib, usr/local/bin... usr/local/whatever without creating specific folders for a given program.
I think it's not right because if we need to remove the program we have to manually delete every of its files if the program's creator didn't take care of it.
Ubuntu :: Jaunty Live CD Not Booting / Screen Hangs When The Loader Reaches About 10% In The Blue Bar?
May 19, 2009For the first time, I booted up a Kubuntu live CD on a laptop (850 MHz, 40 GB HD, 256 MB RAM). Earlier releases (< 9.04) boot up fine but it does not. It hangs up right on the splash screen and I can view nothing but a blinking cursor on the console screen. The screen hangs when the loader reaches about 10% in the blue bar. No further information can be provided when there is just a blinking cursor at the console. The CPU shows no activity. The CD boots up fine on other computer. How do I go on installing Kubuntu? Is it a good option to use the Ubuntu Server CD and install all the Kubuntu desktop software on it once it is installed (Server edition is not live disk, and I do not have an alternate install CD)?

Apr 17, 2011I have an Acer netbook with the netbook version of Ubuntu and Windows 7. When I try to boot on Ubuntu I get a terminal that says "Target filesystem doesn't have /sbin/init. No init found. Try passing init= bootarg." I've found questions about this, but I get lost at "after booting from livecd." I put ubuntu-10.10-netbook-i386 on a flash card, but I don't know how to boot from it; I think that's my main problem.

Nov 16, 2010I have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed.It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?

Oct 7, 2010I am using sda1 as /, which is a bootable drive. I do not know if my problem is that I did not create a /boot drive. After removing the iso dvd, I tried to reboot and I get this back: -bash: /sbin/reboot: input/output error Then it returns me to the terminal prompt.

CNTL+ALT+Fx gets out, and KDE / X can be shutdown with a CNTL+C, however, afterwards doing a df hangs bash.My guess is that there is something IO oriented, as top shows a load of 9+.
There is 5% iowait according to iostat.

Jun 15, 2011On the boot up to the Grub loader screen my monitor (Acer X193w) displays a "screen resolution not supported" message in a floating window, even though the Grub screen itself is displayed. It appears as a flattened rectangle, like wide screen format films on a TV (black bar top and bottom), the floating message on top of it. Once Debian is selected and boots, obviously my xorg.conf takes over and sets the 1440X900 resolution and everything is fine. But the Grub start up bothers me. How do I set the resolution of the Grub loader screen?

Jul 19, 2010I have a mini tower that started life using only Windows XP, I converted it to dual boot Umbuntu 10.04 and Windows XP. So far, so good, since I was using a ps2 mouse and keyboard. My problem started when I converted to wireless keyboard and mouse.....the bios recognizes the keyboard, both operating systems recognize the keyboard and mouse....BUT!!, the grub loader recognizes neither. Now, I can get around this problem by 1. letting Umbuntu load by default or unplugging the USB connection device for the keyboard and mouse and replugging my old ps2 keyboard long enough to boot to the system that I want to use.

Oct 23, 2010I have triple booted Windows XP (195 GB)partition 0? the second partition is Windows 7 (195 GB)And the rest of a 1TB hard drive went to Open Suse 11.3. if it makes any difference I used g parted to create the three partitions and made them all primary. My problem is I want to change the way they all get along. When I boot up, I get the options;

which is fine, but clicking on windows 1 takes me to the windows boot loader with the options of windows 7, or previous version of windows. clicking on windows 2 brings up a screen telling me " rootnoverify (hd0,1) chainloader +1 BOOTMGR is missing press ctrl+alt+del to restart" I would like the end result to be windows 1=XP,windows 2=7, then I can rename them accordingly. one more thing, when I installed openSUSE, I let it automatically configure the hard drive and create the necessary partitions(it deleted partition 3 first). i remember it saying somewhere that the boot manager was past the 125 GB limit, and might not boot.

I copied entire 160 gb as an mirrored image to 500GB HDD using Acronis Disk Director. I deleted entire 160 GB HDD.. Removed the 500 GB HDD and kept it seperate.. Installed ClearOS Enterprise 5.2 Worked a little bit... The i wanted to delete ClearOS.. So i connected 500GB HDD and booted again in Acronis Disk director Formated the entire 160GB HDD.. Copied back the entire 160 from 500GB HDD.. Now my sytem refuses to boot... Just 4 letters "GRUB" appears on the screen... I tried booting using XP CD.. It gives a blue screen.. I tried Windows 7 CD.. It says unable to fix due to MBR problem..
