General :: Grub Boot Loader With Removable Drive Tray?

Oct 19, 2010

I have an internal disk with Linux installed and a removable drive bay for swapping out my windows disks. I'd like to get grub to map one option to the bay and be able to boot whatever disk is in there.

Right now it's mapped by id "/dev/disk/by-id/ata-ST3250310AS_6RY00KB61" but I noticed there is a by-path option. I am not sure how to use it and the documentation isn't very detailed. Is by-path a good way to do this or is there some other way to get this to work?

Fedora Installation :: Repair Grub Through Grub-ubstall - /dev/dsa Doesn't Exist

Jan 17, 2009

I am trying to install my laptop in a triple-boot configuration with Fedora 10, Windows XP and Windows 7 beta. I did already installed them in that order. This is how it is layed out on the harddisk:

Now i want to use grub to present a menu at boot so i can select an OS. Because I installed XP last it boots straight into XP. I've understood i should be able to do the following:

All goes well until the last step (grub-install). It gives an error stating that /dev/sda doesn't exist, which is correct; It doesn't. I do have the "device" listed outside of the chrooted environment.

My question is: How do I get /dev/sda available in my chrooted environment?

Ubuntu Installation :: GRUB Loader / When Power Up Its Saying GRUB Loader Failed?

Nov 16, 2010

I have a laptop with windows vista installed on the internal hardrive.Last March I installed wanted to start to use linux so I brought a separate external hardrive partitioned it to enable media storage on one section and installed ubuntu on the other half. It works fine and so does the windows vista on my internal hardrive, however I have to have the hardrive plugged in to boot.Until now this hasnt bothered me, however I've recently started to take my laptop into university and cannot switch it off unless I have the external hardrive with me as I cannot switch it on without it.With it plugged in it loads up GRUB and then gives me the option to load either Ubuntu or windows vista, however if it is not plugged in when I power up it says GRUB loader failed. It also occured to me that if for some reason my external hardrive fails in the future I wont be able to use my laptop anymore.Has the installation of ubuntu (and GRUB) altered the MBR?
Is there some way I can edit the settings so that I can load windows vista without the hardrive plugged in, and then if it is plugged in I get the choice which one to load?

Ubuntu Installation :: 'No Operating System Installed' - GRUB Doesn't Appear To Exist

Feb 12, 2010

I have a dual boot windows XP/ubuntu 9.10 set up on one hard drive. Everything was working fine. The 9.10 install had been updated from 9.04. I recently had problems with the XP partition (XP basically collapsed) so I re-installed XP on the same partition it was on before. I then attempted to reinstall Ubuntu ( I decided I wanted a new 'clean' installation of Ubuntu as well). When I got to the partition function it refused to recognize that there is a Windows partition, or a previous ubuntu partition, but states 'No operating system installed' or similar, and offers the entire hard drive for installation. When I look at the partitions using Windows partition software the Windows and the ubuntu partitions are clearly in evidence. I have also tried to reinstall GRUB but it doesn't appear to exist.

Fedora Installation :: Grub Boot Loader Doesn't Work For Core 12 And WinXP?

Jun 7, 2010

I have an HP Pavilion m7480n PC with Windows XP installed on the C-drive. I successfully installed FC 12 onto the spare USB drive. When I rebooted the PC all I got was a blinking underscore at the extreme upper left position of a totally black screen. After a bit of experimenting I found that if I hit the F1 key during the boot process, go into the BIOS setup, do nothing within the setup, and press ESC to get out of the setup then the PC will go back into the boot cycle a second time. During the second time however a small text message appears with words to the effect "Press any key to enter GRUB..." after which the GRUB splash screen comes up with the choice for FC 12 or "Other" (referring to Win XP). At that point I can boot into either one.

General :: Why Would Executable Say It Doesn't Exist / When Try To Run It?

Sep 28, 2010

I have a compiled program, a tagger to identify parts of text, which claims it does not exist. This executable has to be called by a generated script, which is how I ran into this issue. What are the reasons this error could show up?The executable was copied from another machine. The file does have execution privileges (it gives a proper not-allowed message without them)I've tried copying the file to a different location (same problem)I've tried replacing the file with a fresh copy (same problem)The file does exist. Opening it with pico shows a file with binary data.

General :: Set The Resolution Of The Grub Loader Screen?

Jun 15, 2011

On the boot up to the Grub loader screen my monitor (Acer X193w) displays a "screen resolution not supported" message in a floating window, even though the Grub screen itself is displayed. It appears as a flattened rectangle, like wide screen format films on a TV (black bar top and bottom), the floating message on top of it. Once Debian is selected and boots, obviously my xorg.conf takes over and sets the 1440X900 resolution and everything is fine. But the Grub start up bothers me. How do I set the resolution of the Grub loader screen?

General :: Grub Loader Does Not Recognize Wireless Keyboard?

I have a mini tower that started life using only Windows XP, I converted it to dual boot Umbuntu 10.04 and Windows XP. So far, so good, since I was using a ps2 mouse and keyboard. My problem started when I converted to wireless keyboard and mouse.....the bios recognizes the keyboard, both operating systems recognize the keyboard and mouse....BUT!!, the grub loader recognizes neither. Now, I can get around this problem by 1. letting Umbuntu load by default or unplugging the USB connection device for the keyboard and mouse and replugging my old ps2 keyboard long enough to boot to the system that I want to use.

General :: Incorporate Windows Boot Loader Into Grub?

Oct 23, 2010

I have triple booted Windows XP (195 GB)partition 0? the second partition is Windows 7 (195 GB)And the rest of a 1TB hard drive went to Open Suse 11.3. if it makes any difference I used g parted to create the three partitions and made them all primary. My problem is I want to change the way they all get along. When I boot up, I get the options;

Desktop -- openSUSE 11.3-2.6.34-12
Failsafe -- openSUSE 11.3-2.6.34-12
windows 1
windows 2

which is fine, but clicking on windows 1 takes me to the windows boot loader with the options of windows 7, or previous version of windows. clicking on windows 2 brings up a screen telling me " rootnoverify (hd0,1) chainloader +1 BOOTMGR is missing press ctrl+alt+del to restart" I would like the end result to be windows 1=XP,windows 2=7, then I can rename them accordingly. one more thing, when I installed openSUSE, I let it automatically configure the hard drive and create the necessary partitions(it deleted partition 3 first). i remember it saying somewhere that the boot manager was past the 125 GB limit, and might not boot.

General :: Executable File Apparently Doesn't Exist When Trying To Execute With Bash

May 9, 2011

I downloaded a program called tonespace http://www.mucoder.net/en/tonespace/ which I extracted and then tried to execute the executable file with ./tonespace. This gives me the following message:

bash: ./tonespace: No such file or directory

When I use the command: file ./tonespace I get this: tonespace: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), for GNU/Linux 2.6.15, stripped

I dont get it. The file is clearly there, yet when trying to execute it bash doesn't seem to recognize it.

It has permissions rwxr-xr-x and is not owned by root. Am I overlooking something?

I'm a Windows guy (have to be, I'm a gamer), so my knowledge of Ubuntu is limited to whatever I can do in the GUI. The command line is beyond me at the moment ('cause it ain't DOS). More so because I have an identical installation to his system (I built both), and I'm wondering if this is about to happen to me too.

General :: Query Died: Fusername: Table 'rsmembers.User' Doesn't Exist

Nov 5, 2010

I just purchased a new server and loaded it with Ubunut server 10. I installed apache2, php5, and mysql5. apache needs a little bit of configuration left (I need to tell it to accept index.php in addition to index.html), but other than that, all the php is working. MySQL is working as well, at least on the server. If I do a "show databases;", it shows all the databases properly. I loaded phpmyadmin on the server for testing, but I'll be removing it once everything works - this is my production server. phpMyAdmin can find all the tables, perform successful queries, and do everything I want it to, HOWEVER If I try to use the login page, I get the error mentioned in the title of this thread.

The database is a carbon copy from my development server, which works flawlessly. All the php and html pages are exactly as they are on the development server too, yet I still get that error. I've reloaded all pertinent programs (apparmor, apache2, and mysql). Apparmor was because I had to declare some new lines for mysql to access a different location for the DBs I resolved the "can't load InnoDB issue", but this one is stumping me.

General :: Deleting Vista Recovery Loader Shown In Grub For Ubuntu 10.04?

I just deleted the windows vista partition and formatted the hard drive (ext4) and now just use Ubuntu, however, in the grub boot, vista and recovery is still showing up. How can I clean the grub up and delete these entries. I've searched all over the place, googled like crazy and all I can find is how to get rid of grub or reinstall the MBR of vista (etc). One more thing, how can I permanently mount the new empty hard drive in Ubuntu so that I have access to it all the time w/out having to mount it.
