I want to install Ububtu Desktop 10.10 on my old Acer Aspire 3693WLMi laptop. Where can I find drivers for this hardware? I think the main problem will be WLAN adapter driver.

I would just run the driver search on ubuntu, however, that PC is not hooked up to the internet and cannot be easily. Is there a way for me to manually find and install the drivers I need on another computer, transfer and install them? I searched on [URL]... but I couldn't find any drivers that were for my T690 and compatible with Linux.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI upgraded my wife's old Acer Aspire 1350 laptop to Lucid Lynx, which works fine, except for the fact that the splash screen both when the OS boots and is shut down is completely garbled and unreadable. The screen is also unreadable when accessing a tty via CTRL+ALT+F2 etc. The GNOME desktop resolution is completely unaffected and is perfectly usable. The splash screen works on MY desktop PC, but it does seem to be using some strange video timings, as my monitor recognises it as 640x480 but doesn't seem able to centre the screen properly. I strongly suspect that this is the cause of problem and my wife's laptop display just does not like the video mode. If I plug my wife's laptop into my monitor, it displays OK.

In the past I have had to install FW cutter & proprietary drivers to get this chipset to work with Ubuntu. With the release of Ubuntu 10.10 Marverick Meercat I seem to remember the WiFi working immediately after installation; although I could be mistaken.
Will I have to go through similar gymnastics to get Debian to work on my system; or do you think it will work right away?

I have tried the following techniques to try and boot from CD on my Acer Aspire 5515 laptop: Change SATA information to Native in BIOS. Set the Boot order for the CD/DVD Drive to start first, along with Main driver starting second.

BIOS Version is V1.0 (latest) from Acer.

I have still not been successfully able to boot from CD. No matter if it says to boot from CD/DVD Drive first, it skips on to Main driver and starts Windows. It's not because I didn't burn the .ISO image right, because it worked on my desktop, which is ALSO an Acer, an Acer Aspire T180. What I am trying to do, is install Windows XP Professional, and dual-boot it with my Windows Vista. Only thing is, it WON'T boot from CD.
I recently bought a new Acer Aspire and installed Lenny, I can get a wired network/internet connection however not a wireless connection. I use wicd. Bluetooth doesn't work either though I suspect that it might be the same issue.
Don't know if it helps however when I tpye iwconfig I get:

I have an Acer Aspire 1410 laptop which was running Win7. The laptop lacks a DVD drive and came pre-installed with a recovery partition as well.I've been searching for ways to dual-boot Fedora on it. I bought a Samsung USB DVD drive, but I burned two copies of Fedora 12 and neither would boot, nor would my Knoppix Live CD. I even updated the bios. Then I tried liveusb-creator from my desktop Fedora 10 system, but I would still run into strange errors that prevented booting into the installer.
Finally I downloaded UNetbootin and created a USB stick to boot Fedora 12. Neither Fedora 12 nor Ubuntu would recognize my network adaptor for some reason. Undaunted, I then used UNetbootin to create a Fedora 11 image which got me into the boot installer for the first time. I then used my Fedora 12 image from my portable DVD drive to install. The install seemed to go well.
That is, until I rebooted. Grub came up as expected. Fedora 12 runs into a very early Kernel panic (not syncing: DMAR hardware is malfunctioning) within moments. I tried rebooting into Windows, but it apparently doesn't care much for Grub. It sends me into the Recovery software and asks me to reset my hard drive. I've tried that a couple of times now and it's useless. Is the problem with Grub? I thought it would play nicely with Win7 and at least allow me to boot into it, which is why I allowed it to overwrite my MBR. I lack a Win7 disc and cannot repair the MBR that way.

Not doing anything special, just browsing the web and I get a few of these soft lockups. Cannot reboot, have to power it off and on when it happens. USB stops working also.

I have a laptop Acer Aspire 4551-2194. I've installed Debian Squeeze with XFCE and it works great. I have only one problem. I can go through hibernation / suspend, but when I push the power button, the computer hangs. It doesn't come back and I must reboot it.

They have 2 computers upstairs, one laptop and one desktop that recognized the WiFi and don't have any trouble using it. Wondering if there is something I have accidently clicked or changed to make it not connect. It does not have an error message, it just does not connect completely.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an Acer 4810T laptop with Intel graphics. I run openSUSE 11.3, and am about to upgrade to 11.4. But both systems still have a very bad bug with screen brightness. The Fn+Arrow keys do change screen brightness, but after using them the system is rendered extremely sluggish and unresponsive. This sluggishness is most pronounced with a very important Wine app I need to use. The only way to fix the sluggishness is to reboot. With 11.4, the problem is worse because the system boots and automatically partially dims the screen, thus making it even more necessary to change the brightness. Neither Gnome nor KDE are able to change the brightness via their power managers. This means that I can't dim my screen automatically upon disconnecting the A/C power.
I have read many experiences from Ubuntu and openSUSE users, who all have the same problem. I have tried both intellegacy and the new intel drivers, and they both have the problem. I have read that some users have improved the situation by upgrading or downgrading the BIOS. Others have been experimenting with kernel patches:

I'm running Fedora 10 [KDE] on an Acer laptop and am having problems configuring "hot keys" for it. First thing that needs to be mentioned is that the hotkeys used to work when I was running it on Gnome without me having to do anything. I assumed that this will be the case with KDE too. In any case, I think driver installation is supposed to be quite straight forward. There are two packages: acer_acpi and acerhk and different installation instructions for each one of them. The problem I am having is when I run the makefile script for either one of these, I get the following output in the terminal:

I think build-essential and some other packages are normally needed, but since you can't get them for Fedora (?), I groupinstalled "Development Tools" and some other group.
i tried to install ubuntu 9.10 in my acer aspire lap. i got the ubuntu CD by parcel.i was able to select the language, then second option -install ubuntu also went rite, after that nothing is happening. how can i correct it?

in compliance with bonekracker's advice, i have reposted my SOS. i have the result of the outputs of the commands for ifconfig, iwconfig, and etc i have uploaded it in the file output.doc. i hope this would be helpful in debugging my problem.but before that, i do notice that if i click on the icon for the Network Manager, the Wireless networks is set to 'wireless disabled'. maybe if i can make it turn on, my wireless problem will be solved.. its just that i even if i move the switch for the wifi, it still wouldn't turn on.

View 7 Replies View RelatedI tried to install the beta version of maverick with no luck. I used usb creator to put maverick on a memory stick. When I went into live mode everything worked perfectly so I thought why not install it. I then tried to do this but after filling out all the required info it wouldn't install. I clicked the install button and the installer froze up. I currently have ubuntu netbook remix (9.04) installed on it in desktop mode. I also, awhile ago, try installing lucid (both desktop and netbook remixes) and had a similar problem with them. They both stalled installing at the 15% mark. Now with this problem with maverick I am wondering why this could be happening. I have used different memory sticks so I have ruled that out as a problem. They all have worked flawlessly and speedily in live mode.

Most times I start up, the image is 800x480 against the left edge, black bar on the right side, and a repeated image at the bottom. (I can attach a picture if needed.)I've been seeing this problem since Ubuntu 9.10, but it's more common recently with 10.10. If I keep shutting down and powering back on, eventually it will come up in 1024x600 as I desire. If that happens, then I avoid shutting down and only use Suspend instead. However, anytime I need to reboot (for updates, etc.) the 800x480 comes back.
The Acer logo / BIOS splash screen is also in 800x480, but I only see it switch back to 1024x600 after Ubuntu loads and is shut down. (Repeatedly clicking on/off/on/off never results in the resolution changing to 1024x600.) So, I'm still suspicious that Ubuntu is causing this (no hardware). WinXP used to be on this machine, and the problem was never seen.I don't think any proprietary drivers are needed (but I am still a Ubuntu noob.) When the problem is occurring, I see this result for xrandr:

I'm used to plugging in an ethernet cable for the first round of updates until I get the WiFi working, but it just isn't working for me this time. I have a horrid feeling that Windows has a way of hogging the Ethernet card.
I had a look in the forums, and could not find anything referring to this specifically, which is unusual because as far as I can tell the AA1 is a popular machine and lots of people dual boot it. Perhaps it is an easy fix that's been buried in the archives?

I've got an Acer Aspire AM3920 (Intel Core i5) Desktop PC. I want to upgrade my Ubuntu Maverick Meerkat to Natty Narwhal, but it just isn't working. I've tried to upgrade two times, both resulting in a crash while installing. When I try to install it from a Live CD, I'm getting a black screen and when I press a key in the purple screen of the Live CD and select nomodeset, it doesn't work either. So my question is: Is it possible to install/run Ubuntu 11.04 on this PC?
