In the end, I want to include/append contents of /nonserved to /media so that [URL] will be as such:

I am running Ubuntu Server, I am up for either apache config or symbolic link based answer :) Plus nonserved folder is rather dynamic thus manual symbolic linking to each folder is impossible.
How do I (through command line) download folder X and all of its content from the remote system to my local system?

The problem is that in the old one i had linux (Slackware) and so it doesn't allow me to view the content of the folder /home/myself. If there was something possible to do to recover all the data or if it will be forever lost.

I want the structure to be ~/music/<artist>/<album> I've got all of the symlinks into ~/music right now so I just need to get the symlinks into the proper structure. I'm trying to do this by delving into the symlinked album, getting the artist name with id3info. I can do this, but I can't seem to get it to work correctly.

I'm trying to mv The Trance Mix 3 Wanderlust - DJ Exortius [TRANCE DEEP VOCAL TECH]@ into the real directory DJ Exortius. DJ Exortius already exists, so it's just a matter of moving it into the correct directory that's based on the id3 tag of the mp3 inside.
PS: I've tried easytag, but when I restructure the album, it moves it from /home/foo which is not what I want.
I am using secure delete to remove files from a Debian Linux PC. However, secure delete does not remove folders. This has lead me to look at writing a script that would move files to a predetermined folder for deletion. My plan is as follows:I have a folder on my desktop called shredder where I move the contents of the waste bin to. The script needs to identify all files within the folders and sub folders, within the shredder folder, and move each file to the shredder folder and then delete the folder. At this point secure delete can be used with a command like shred -v -u *.*on the shredder folder.The problem I have is in creating the code to move files from the different folders and then deleting the folders. View 7 Replies View RelatedI was dragging and dropping content from a folder onto the user desktop folder when suddenly instead of the packed Desktop Folder I got the Home folder with the few normal files that were in it AND one file called Desktop.
(actually, the file name was "Escritorio" and it was a PDF file, and in $HOME/.config/ the file user-dirs.dirs was changed to say XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/" instead of XDG_DESKTOP_DIR="$HOME/Escritorio")
I've searched around but only found how to recreate a folder calles "Desktop" (or "Escritorio") and have it act like such, but not how to eventually recover the original "Desktop" folder AND ALL ITS CONTENTS (quite a lot!)
Is there any way to get the content back?

what the recommended way to set up real-time (or near real-time) folder synchronization among 2+ servers. I looked a rsync but that doesn't sound real-time and it looks like its something that you might put in a cron once an hour.

However, the folder is 'locked' as it requires root priveleges and I can't drop files there without being the admin. I'd like to reduce 'open as root' files to minimum, so I was wondering if there is a way to change the permissions of all the content in one operation, preferably using GUI, and not the terminal?
In addition I've noticed that other folders in my Home Folder like Pictures/Wallpapers require root privileges. This is really annoying as when I 'experiment' with Ubuntu I use Live CD to make sure I don't screw up the main system. When I do I can't open some files from hard disk because of those root inconsistencies

If I get this working, I can do the same with the rest of my desktop and laptop users. When online they can run a script with rsync and update data. Is it possible to get 2 way sync?
View 3 Replies View RelatedAfter checking my tmp folder I found out some strange hidden and unhidden folders of programs that I have not used or downloaded. After removing each one using sudo rm -rf some folders insist on re-appearing, and after a reboot all folders are back.
Moreover, trying netstat -l, found that many of these files are in listening state.
How can I permanently erase them?

And now I see what looks like an electrical plug icon symbol over the folder icon symbol like I might see used for some of the root folders. I had a folder named "Rage Against the Machine" in my Home directory which contained a bunch of music files. I opened my Terminal window and planned on moving it to a folder named "Downloads" inside my home folder, so I used this command:

Now I can't actually find the folder inside Downloads, which I think it should be. so I even tried running this to find it:

and it couldn't find it either.
Where did it go??

id like to lock a user into his websites folder not his home folder. and i dont want him to be able to veiw anything outside that folder, only be able to play with whats inside that folder. is this possible?

My local emails are now managed by a "local folders" component of akonadi. The folder structure is displayed correctly in Kmail. However, no emails are shown for some folders. Emails still live in the .kde4/share/app/kmail directory hierarchy and can be imported into a new folder after moving them somewhere else. However, even after a fresh import sometimes emails are no longer recognized.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've been setting up a media server on a an actual server machine I picked up dirt cheap, and had it running xUbuntu fine. gave it a 5gig root directory, 5gig swap partiton, and three 34gig storage drives. Everything was running smoothly.
Just recently I learned that the 5gig's dedicated to running my operating system of choice, aren't enough to install all the software I wanted(I might be just a little greedy). The first logical step to correcting this problem was to move /etc to one of the storage drives and create a link were it was, but not being entirely sure how xUbuntu would take that, I thought I'd get an expert opinion.
The thread prefix is "all variants" because I have installed the desktops for kUbuntu and just plain Ubuntu on this machine(what I meant by being a little greedy).

If I rename the uploads folder to something else, what will happen when they go to log in since the /var/ftp/uploads path is no longer valid?

Since I at the moment use Transmission as my bittorrent client a script would also work since Transmission can run it after finishing the download.
I have a Ubuntu 10.10 server; I have created several users and wish them to have their own web space (with a unique domain name for each). I have therefore created www folders within their home folder and created new Virtual Servers to host each domain name and point to the users www folder in their home folder. They can then use an FTP client to upload files. This all works well.
However, I would like to stop a user from going back up a level and traversing the tree.They can currently go back up to /home and see other users names.
