General :: Recovering Data - Doesn't Allow To View The Content Of The Folder /home/myself

Jun 29, 2010

I needed to install a new OS on a new HD but i also need the data on the old HD which has some problems (it doesn't boot anymore). The problem is that in the old one i had linux (Slackware) and so it doesn't allow me to view the content of the folder /home/myself. If there was something possible to do to recover all the data or if it will be forever lost.

Ubuntu Security :: Recovering Encrypted Home Folder?

Jul 19, 2010

Let's begin from the top. I have a relatively new laptop that I've been running Ubuntu on (along with a little-used Windows boot). Picked it up in November or so, installed the current "latest" version of Ubuntu at the time (9.10). I have been doing incremental upgrades, and it's been progressively breaking down more and more. Yes, this includes 10.04.

After GRUB stopped working, I decided it was time to try a reinstall from the top. I told it to leave all the other operating systems alone and do a full reinstall.

Fortunately, I had managed to stuff most of my current work in duplicate locations during this whole debacle, somehow. Don't ask me how I managed to do that when GRUB wasn't working. However, when I installed, I conscientiously said "Oh, yes, Ubuntu, encrypt my home folder! I love privacy!" As a result, about... 30 gigabytes of useful (but ultimately re-downloadable) material is rather inaccessible at the moment. When I try to boot the old system using the newly fixed GRUB, it goes into kernel panic. This seems like a no-go.

I have a saved hojillion-character long passphrase for decryption from my install back in November. Conscientiously saved in the case of just such an emergency.

I read this how-to and followed it to the letter as far as I could tell, trying to mount with ecrytfs to recover my data.

[USERNAME] here is a proxy for my actual username. Yes, the location of my old home folder may seem a little bizarre.

Code:
sudo mount -t ecryptfs /media/c82ca9fe-2b15-4aca-a98d-6482b1d80a32/home/[USERNAME]/ /home/[USERNAME]/oldhome
Passphrase:
Select cipher:
1) aes: blocksize = 16; min keysize = 16; max keysize = 32 (not loaded)

Fedora :: Nautilus Can't View Home Folder?

Mar 12, 2010

When I try to view ~ in nautilus, the animation in the upper right corner just spins indefinitely. It happens when I run nautilus as root too.Typing "ls -la" in the home folder will cause the term to freeze. Neither "ls -a" or "ls -l" by themselves cause it to freeze The freezing only happens in ~ to my knowledge. The freezing terminal also ONLY happens in xterm, inside gnome. Through ssh I can display the folder contents just fine, and I don't see any strange file names that might be causing an issue.I tried following advice I found, I believe on this site, to "rm -rf ~/.gvfs"I feel that I may e overwritten a fedora-specific library somewhere when trying to compile different things. I don't recall this being an issue immediately after upgrading from fc10 to fc12, though it could have conceivably gone unnoticed.

Ubuntu :: Manage Home Folder - Pick Their Own Conventions For Saving Data And None Of Them Are The Same

Mar 15, 2010

I was digging through my laptop tonight and I realized I'd like more control over my home folder. It seems as though programs installed on my laptop just pick their own conventions for saving data and none of them are the same. Some programs store their data in self named hidden folders, others use ~/.config and others use ~/.local/share to put their stuff. Is there a way I'm missing to get all these to cooperate or are we doomed to always having programs making themselves at "home" and just tossing off their shoes wherever they like?

I started Puppy-Linux from DVD-Drive. Worked fine. But puppy can't mount her /dev/sda1 partition either. At least you can see that the partition is still there. Fsck stops with an error. May be the initial problem is a sort of bad hardware by which bad bytes were written to the hard drive. Hard drive and/or memory could be replaced but not the data.

General :: Inexpensive Web Content Filtering Options For Home Use?

Feb 18, 2011

I've been using an old Fortigate-60 at home for the kids for some time but now the license is expired again. Are there any free or inexpensive alternatives? I'd like something I can run on a linux firewall and share against multiple users, with different profiles. In the past I ran squid and I whitelisted sites each kid was allowed to use but this becomes tedious as the kids get older and need access to more. I'd love something that could check a website rating or category list, let the user through for certain categories, and block bad or unrated sites. I don't really need virus checking or email scanning or the like.

General :: Recovering Data From Ext3 Partition With Hardware Errors - Recovery Required On Readonly Filesystem

Jan 10, 2010

I have an external 3.5" USB 250Gb HDD which is showing symptoms of hardware problems (repeated /var/log/messages errors of "reset high speed USB device using ehci_hcd"). This was originally plugged in to my NSLU2 running Debian Etch. I have just installed Ubuntu Desktop 9.10 to a spare Pentium-3M laptop and was hoping to copy the contents of this HDD to a fresh drive. However, I cannot mount it even read-only; mount -o ro /dev/sde3 /mnt/disk fails, and the /var/log/messages error is "recovery required on readonly filesystem", "write access unavailable, cannot proceed". I cannot understand why mounting a disk read-only should require write access. Following advice I googled elsewhere, I tried running mke2fs -n /dev/sde3 to try to list the alternative superblocks - but once again I got the error that the device was read-only. How can I go about accessing the data on this disk?

Ubuntu :: Desktop Keeps Crashing When Renaming Folder Under Folder View Plasmoid?

Jun 17, 2011

Running kubuntu 11.04x64 w/ xrender and folder-view plasmoid:

I cannot view "open with" for directories on the desktop (but it is visible w/in dolphin file structure) and whenever I try to rename folders on the desktop it crashes and restarts (but the rename is successful and no open windows crash).

This glitch is reproducible under OpenGL and Xrender; had to switch over to xrender after a recent system update that seems to slow my computer to a crawl after a little time and kept it cause it seems much smoother and crisper.

Is there any way to fix these issues or is there an alternative to the folder-view plasmoid to view a folder content on the desktop that is more stable?
