I need to make it so that someone who is using my computer, logged in with my user name, is prompted by a window in the GUI if they try to access a certain folder. Logging in with a different user name is not an option, so "chmod"ing, "chown"ing or encryption is out. I picture something similar to what happens when you try to access GParted, Synaptic Package Manager, etc. When you try to access those, a window pops up prompting you for the root password. The reason being is that my wife uses my computer, logged in as me. She doesn't ever log out and log in with the user name I set up for her because it's "inconvenient." She's also not computer savvy whatsoever. Also, my kids run around like maniacs and my 3 (almost 4) year old knows how to click on things and type without knowing what she's doing. This has resulted in some deleted/changed files such as spreadsheets with important financial data and or Cisco configs in them. I would like to leave my computer on without having to watch over it all the time. Ok, I know there are threads in various forums all over the place with people who have asked this question, but nobody ever seems to actually provide an adequate answer or solution to the original poster as far as I can tell. (I have been searching for two hours on Google with no results). I am running Debian Squeeze. I am not necessarily a "beginner" anymore, being that I can move around and do pretty much anything I used to be able to do when I used to run Windows (yuck), but this is definitely something that is a bit over my head.
There are a few requirements, however.
-No creating new users or having to log in as another user
-I do not want to simply "chmod -r", "chmod ###", or "chown" the directory
-I also understand you can encrypt directories, but that's not what I need.

I have a LAMP box which runs on Ubuntu 8.10 on it. I am looking to password protect the web directory, so when a visitor accesses any site within they are prompted for a username/password. Is there a package available?

I would like to upload files via ftp or sftp to my web directory at /var/www/...
Originally I had installed openssh-server (through apt-get, before learning about tasksel). I assumed this only had ssh support and not ftp, so after a quick search, I installed vsftpd. I would like to learn how to configure openssh, and I mention vsftpd in case there is a conflict.
Right now I am able to log in to my server box through ssh/ftp, but I can only modify my home directory. I created a directory: /var/www/andrew and set permissions to drwxr-xr-x. I am unable to upload files to this folder.
What do I have to do to resolve this, and is there anything else I should know about my situation?

I just installed FC10 and then used yumex to install the vsftpd FTP daemon package. I'm using the vsftpd.conf file that came with the distribution, and its almost identical to one I copied from my FC2 machine's working set-up. When I try to FTP in as a known system user I'm presented with my home directory /home/myusername/. The directory appears empty to the FTP program, but isn't in reality. I can't upload a file to the empty home directory. I can move up the directory hierarchy to /home/, but again that appears as an empty directory.
I don't think it's a vsftpd.conf file issue. I've tried everything I can there. Could it have something to do with permissions? I fiddled with those, but couldn't make an FTP directory listing work.

We are running into issues with a File Upload script written in PHP. We can upload files without issues except with .*x files (such as .docx) We are getting permission denied errors. The error occurs when we use move upload file, to the new directory within our PHP app. If we give the uploads folder 777 access, it works fine without error. I dont like that. So I set it to 775 (Also dont like this), but it didnt work until I gave group ownership to www-data (I really dont like this)
This issue only happens on our production server, which is Ubuntu 9.04, running Apache2.2 and PHP5 will all the newest updates. We also have all MIME's configured, and are able to download the file from Apache without error. The first thing we noticed before the file permissions error, was that the MIME type changed to .zip when we used mime content type function. But yet using the FILES array, it still showed .docx.

I have proftpd @ Ubuntu 9.04 server. It authenticates users via Auth file, e.g. those are "FTP only" users, not real linux users. Each of them has assigned home dir in the same auth file. They also get Chrooted into it, e.g. default dir is ~ in proftpd.conf They can connect and download files successfully, however, they cannot upload anything or create directory: 550 permission denied error.
When I login via ssh and change user to proftpd user, I can create directories in that particular place, so I guess it's not Linux permissions problem? Or is it? /var/log/daemon.log is the place where proftpd stores its logs, but I cannot find anything relevant there

I ftp into the server and see the files, but when i try to make a directory or upload a file it returns an error saying that permission is denied.I am wanting the users to be able to log on with their user account and then be able to have full control over their directories. What can i do to fix this problem?I have enabled port forwarding for ftp. What else is there i can do? If you need any extra information, let me know! I would like to get this fixed asap! Here is my vsftpd.conf file.

have setup a LAMP server with ubuntu 10.04 server edition x86 for my study in VMware Workstation 7.1 For a assignment I had to make a php script that would load a file up to the server and set the name in a mysql database. According to the book the server should set the image in a cryptic folder in the /tmp/ folder.
This isn't working and i also try'd locate and find to find the image i uploaded. I checked the php.ini and file uploads were on but no folder so i set that one to /tmp/ but still no images. Can anyone help me with enabling this function?

In the organization where I work, we are working on a project written using PHP. It is a small project. Is there any software which will allow us to protect the code somehow? I am not a developer here so I have got not much idea about it and most of the developers are .Net developers and it allows protecting code and developers need something like that.

I occasionally have friends using my home computer. They just use my account. There are some files that I want to hide/protect from people using my computer. It's not that I need highly secure encryption, it's more like I want to make sure people don't accidentally see my porn collection if they borrow my computer to check their email. Is there a way to set up a folder such that it's required to enter a password (e.g. the admin password) to see it's content? Probably I could change the owner of the folder, so that I can't access it without password? How do you protect/hide your secret or intimate files?

It seems that AppArmor can't be effectively used to protect read access to files from users (including roots). It is possible to create a profile for, eg, 'cat', but then the users can use 'less'.Is this true? Should use SELinux instead for this?

Intrepid Ibex (U8.10) is what I am using presently and I would like to know if there are measures that I can take to prevent my ISP from keeping data that flows between my PC and it.
I am living in Australia, I am wanting to keep the bastards (read: Australian Government) ignorant about what I use my PC for.
Its them storing any of my personal information that I am worried about, but if I can keep my history from them completely, even better...

Every developer in our organization has access to a single development server and all development ( other than basic experimentation ) is done on this server. This is primarily because there are several interdependent systems and having copies of these systems on each developers machine slows that machine down to the extent of making it completely unusable. All developers access this development server using ssh. Of course this implies that scp will also work as the sshd daemon is running making data vulnerable.
We are currently attempting to secure the code and data on this server from unauthorized copying and transfer.
Currently I am attempting to set up virtual machines on each developer machine that can then be used to connect to the development server. I have created a shell that does nothing but allow for the typing of one command that simply transfers ( ssh login ) the user onto the development server.
I am using virtualBox and ubuntu mini to achieve this.
Problems: The first question is if this is a reasonable way to achieve what I am attempting to. Is there a better way?
The others is more in terms of the set-up: I am attempting to resize the virtualBox console. I tried this by editing grub. Although I am able to resize the screen at start-up the entire screen goes back to ( what I believe is 800x600 ) after the Ubuntu splash screen.
The virualBox seems to have completely messed up the keyboard detection how can I rectify this?
The other is regarding the restricting of shell access I have currently done this by removing access to /bin/ for normal users. Is this secure enough or is there a better way?

I have followed following steps to implement, ftp upload by test1 user.
Code:
1. Add group ftp-users
# /usr/sbin/groupadd ftp-users
2. User test1 has been added to the group of ftp-users with /home/ftp-docs as home directory
# /usr/sbin/usermod -g ftp-users -d /home/ftp-docs test1
3. Ownership and permission of /home/ftp-docs has been changed to provide read/write access to user test1 and group ftp-users
# chown test1.ftp-users /home/ftp-docs
# chmod 770 /home/ftp-docs
But My intention is for the user who login with test1 user privileges, he should not be able to browse any other directories say /, /var /etc etc. Also he should not be able to change to any other directory. How can I accomplish this ?

I have CENTOS server with suPHP installed. The user (UID) and group (GID) are different for PHP files. But when I upload any file using FTP, it makes user:user and suphp fails to parse it. I then change the ownership (using ssh) as user:group for the php file and it works.

How do I download (upload) engrave-11.py from "Simple G-Code Generators Written in Python"? One of my home workshop project is a small engraver using a small micrometer linear table and three small steppers. It works fine with Stickfont - a free download - but I need something more sophisticated such as Engrave-11.py. When I follow the instructions from the Wiki I finish up with what I believe to be the source code and no means of generating an executable file.
