Nov 16, 2010I'm unable to open and view folders graphically. I click Places -> Home Folder (or any of the other folders, including Computer), and the cursor turns to the spinning "wait" dial, but the folder won't appear. A tab appears in the bottom panel, with the title "opening ZenBeam" (or "opening Desktop" or "Starting Computer", depending on which folder I tried to open) for a few seconds, but then goes away. Left- or Right-clicking on these tabs doesn't give me any options.
This used to work normally, but stopped suddenly a few days ago, following a reboot. I'm guessing it's become corrupted, but I don't know what "it" is. I can navigate in a command line window normally.I have rebooted, and I have run System -> Administration -> Software Update, but that didn't fix the problem.I was going to add the information in System -> About This Computer, but that seems to be having the same problem.What can I do to fix this? What application is failing to run?

Nov 23, 2010I don't know if this is a known issue, but when I want to copy/move a file to a folder containing lots of sub-folder displayed as list, I can't do a simple drag&drop, because there is no empty space to move this file. It will always go into one of the sub-folders. So obviously I have to go up one folder or to change view from list to Icon or Compact. Is it a known issue? Is there a solution? (Using GNOME nautilus 2.30.1)

Feb 28, 2009I just installed AWStats on a new server and can't get perl to properly work as a cgi in apache. I've done this before and got it to work, and I've tried a couple suggestions found from google with no luck. When I try to access [URL] from my browser, Apache doesn't give any errors or anything, it just outputs the perl file in plain text, which implies that it's not handling the .pl file as a perl cgi, but I just don't know why.

Jan 29, 2011I am running opensuse with LAMP, and this is my first time setting up this type of server (usually am a windows junkie) My problem i am having is that I am unable to view my website from outside the local network. I have setup my router for a dynamic dns and forwarded all the ports through the router and the local firewall. I ran the apache setup through YAST2 and everything seems fine locally but when i attempt to access it elsewhere its not connecting. computechsolutions.dyndns.biz is the dynamic dns address i have setup through my router.

Ubuntu Servers :: Apache Not Letting Me Host From Other Folders / Fix It?
Jun 3, 2011I just did a new install of 11.04 because I got a new ssd and now when I try to host my site from /home/USER/www/ apache says "You don't have permission to access / on this server" 403 Forbidden. I had the same exact configuration files on my other install of 11.04 and everything worked fine. One thing I did notice is that when apache installed it did not create a www-data group. I also serve a folder for music on another port and I can get to that fine.

Sep 23, 2010I want to setup a folder (several really) for websites that use PHP.
I am running Linux Ubuntu with PHP, APACHE installed.
The Apache server works in Firefox as 127.0.1.1 no problem.
The default directory is (DocumentRoot) /var/www This is stored in a file called /etc/apache2/sites-enabled/000-default
PHP executes no problem, if it is in the default directory (/var/www).
However, I'd like to activate PHP in a folder on another hard-drive (also).
In that folder I'd like to store several websites, all which will use PHP and MYSQL.
The problem is, my boot drive where /var/www currently is located has only 2 gig of space (21 gig for operating system, which seems high).
PHP files in the other hard drive do not execute, even under APACHE server.
How can I safely change the PHP enabled folder? How can I add more folders, without erasing the current one?

Mar 27, 2010I have a strange problem with sites on which there are many images, the likes of ebay or the google image search. The images or the preview images won't load in Ubuntu (I am on 9.10).
Neither using FF, Konqueror nor Chrome.... It can't be the router either, because when I boot into Windows on the same machine it is working.
It is even working on a MAC at the same it doesn't work on Ubuntu....

Dec 16, 2010I need to make it so that someone who is using my computer, logged in with my user name, is prompted by a window in the GUI if they try to access a certain folder. Logging in with a different user name is not an option, so "chmod"ing, "chown"ing or encryption is out. I picture something similar to what happens when you try to access GParted, Synaptic Package Manager, etc. When you try to access those, a window pops up prompting you for the root password. The reason being is that my wife uses my computer, logged in as me. She doesn't ever log out and log in with the user name I set up for her because it's "inconvenient." She's also not computer savvy whatsoever. Also, my kids run around like maniacs and my 3 (almost 4) year old knows how to click on things and type without knowing what she's doing. This has resulted in some deleted/changed files such as spreadsheets with important financial data and or Cisco configs in them. I would like to leave my computer on without having to watch over it all the time. Ok, I know there are threads in various forums all over the place with people who have asked this question, but nobody ever seems to actually provide an adequate answer or solution to the original poster as far as I can tell. (I have been searching for two hours on Google with no results). I am running Debian Squeeze. I am not necessarily a "beginner" anymore, being that I can move around and do pretty much anything I used to be able to do when I used to run Windows (yuck), but this is definitely something that is a bit over my head.
There are a few requirements, however.
-No creating new users or having to log in as another user
-I do not want to simply "chmod -r", "chmod ###", or "chown" the directory
-I also understand you can encrypt directories, but that's not what I need.

Feb 11, 2011I was recording a DVD when I wanted to look at a folder to see if there was a file there. I went to "places", as I always do, and a window poped up asking for a password. This has never happened before. I entered the password and went to the folder. I always view folders as "list", then they displayed as "icons". I finished the recording and re-started. It still appears the same, and when I open programs I notice little differences in the way things look and feel. The reason I was recording DVD's was to get some of the movies off my hard drive. It was down to 81Gbs free, It now says there is 365 Gbs free. I have searched everything and I see nothing missing.

Ubuntu Installation :: Restricting Access To The Development Servers And Protecting The Data?
Nov 26, 2010Every developer in our organization has access to a single development server and all development ( other than basic experimentation ) is done on this server. This is primarily because there are several interdependent systems and having copies of these systems on each developers machine slows that machine down to the extent of making it completely unusable. All developers access this development server using ssh. Of course this implies that scp will also work as the sshd daemon is running making data vulnerable.
We are currently attempting to secure the code and data on this server from unauthorized copying and transfer.
Currently I am attempting to set up virtual machines on each developer machine that can then be used to connect to the development server. I have created a shell that does nothing but allow for the typing of one command that simply transfers ( ssh login ) the user onto the development server.
I am using virtualBox and ubuntu mini to achieve this.
Problems: The first question is if this is a reasonable way to achieve what I am attempting to. Is there a better way?
The others is more in terms of the set-up: I am attempting to resize the virtualBox console. I tried this by editing grub. Although I am able to resize the screen at start-up the entire screen goes back to ( what I believe is 800x600 ) after the Ubuntu splash screen.
The virualBox seems to have completely messed up the keyboard detection how can I rectify this?
The other is regarding the restricting of shell access I have currently done this by removing access to /bin/ for normal users. Is this secure enough or is there a better way?
