I have a oldish PC (intel celeron 1.4, 256 MB ram) with a skystar DVB-S card. I would like to use it as a Media PC to view channel and listen to music etc. I have tried Linux DVR, Geexbox and Movix without any success.
View 1 RepliesI installed Unbuntu and tried a couple of media players to listen to music. This was a cd I put in the cd Rom. Both media players seemed to work ok, except that I was not getting any sound from either one. I did check to see if the volume control was on nil. That was ok. I do however have Sound blaster sound card installed. so my on board sound is off. I am not into the linux language as yet so I am a bit stuck at the moment.

There used to be a selector where you could set which microphone or line input should be used in KDE 3 (Kmix).
Now, in KDE 4 it is gone and I cannot figure out how to set it. i.e. to change from using an external mic to the internal mic.
After installing fedora 10 KDE, i noticed I can't listen to any music with xmms,amarok,xmms2 etc. Nothing works
I updated everything I believe, it just won't play the files period. I get sound from ..... videos tho, so my flashplayer works. Let me know if I need to be more specific. I really would like to get xmms to work.
I cant play any music in listen music player but I do have gstreamer as rhythmbox plays any mp3 so whats the problem I don't get it and yep I am not so experienced.

And just to clarify, when I say virtual terminal I mean the terminals accessed by CTRL+ALT+(F1-F6). I'm going to be doing a challenge/learning experience where I don't allow myself a graphical interface for a month. way around BASH through adaption. However, if I have to go a month without music I will go insane.
So, even if this is possible can I listen to music from the internet (....., playlist.com, etc.) or just music on my hard drive? And I'm not sure if this thread belongs in Desktop Environments or not, that section seemed to focus on graphical interface.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have an old box, running Ubuntu 10.10. Mostly to be able to use internet and listen to music in my workshop. In the beginning this computer worked just fine. My Acer AL1912 was detected properly and screenresolution was automatically set to 1280x1024. When looking in system=settings=screens the monitor was detected as a Acer 1912. For some reason I brought the computer over to another place and that other monitor (an Eizo) was also properly detected. Resolution changed automatically to 1912x1280.
Now, when I have moved the computer back, all monitor settings are completely lost and I can't seem to be able to change them. I am stuck on 1024x768 and the monitor is detected as "unknown". I have tried to change the values for resolutions in monitor.xml but the values revert to 1024x768 (which look quite fuzzy on my screen. So my short question is: Is there anyway to completely restore the monitor-/screen settings in Ubuntu 10.10 so it will autodetect my monitor properly again?
I am new here and I have tried checking similar threads as well as other sources in the net but could not get my card working. I use Debian squeeze on a P4 2.4MHz machine with 2 GB ram. lspci can detect all 8 chips but could not load the proper module since it could not identify the vendor. I have tried unloading the SAA7134 module and reloading repeatedly all possible cards from 1 to 174 by "modprobe -i SAA7134 card=#,#,#,#,#,#,#,# #-numbers 1 to 174 one a a time.

While the files get stored on the ipod, when I try to listen to music the ipod just says "please use iTunes to sync music". The model in question is listed as supported by gtkpod, so What's going wrong?

Let me begin by saying that I'm a "casual user" of my computer (I'm a retiree who uses her 'machine' for email, looking up mostly useless info, & pretending to be a writer). However, migraines from beating my head on the keyboard in frustration over Windows eccentricities led me straight to Linux. Linux blows windows out of the water, IMO.
Except for Media Players. I have tried every one in Ubuntu's software catalog. Rhythmbox is the only one that works, & it doesn't work correctly. I use my computer as my primary music source, & have saved nearly 200 albums/CDs to it. I transferred my collection to a memory stick, then tried to transfer it to Ubuntu. Rhythmbox 'accepted' most but not all albums, but none of the downloaded music, & lists the songs in each album backwards. When I open an album, sometimes Rhythmbox plays them backwards, sometimes (rarely) 'frontwards', but usually, jumps around, plays a few of the numbers, then stops. Occasionally, it goes through the collection, playing one song from each collection.
I was able to transfer the entire collection to 'Listen' media player, but it doesn't actually play anything, & I never even got that far with any other player. I have a two year-old HP Compaq Presario desktop w/ 500GB, (300 to Ubuntu & the rest to The Dreaded Windows for some stuff I can't run on Linux). I began with running Ubuntu 10.04 on 'wubi', then installed it from a CD I burned from the Ubuntu site. Someone suggested I had screwed something up during downloading, so I got 10.04 on a CD (w/ "Ubuntu for Non-Geeks"), but had the same media player problems. Last month I upgraded to 10.10, but still have the same problems.
Ok so I am a total newbie at Ubuntu Linux and I'm having problems I don't know how to solve.
1.) Up until yesterday this wasn't a problem, but after a power outage while I was connected I am now unable to connect to the internet anymore as it says "Networking is disabled", how do i enable the "networking"?
2.) Another problem I am having is that I am not able to dim the screen in order to save power among other uses, I've looked around but haven't been able to find a solution, I am running ubuntu on a Gateway M-Series Laptop.
3.) Finally, since installing linux I have been unable to listen to music or any other sounds through headphones or speakers, when i connect something into the audio output, the outer speakers do shut off but no sound is emitted through the speakers/headphones, and yes i have tried multiple ones to make sure it wasn't the headphones or speakers.
How can I make NFS listen to a specific card (eth3). I have eth0, 1,2 & 3.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm running VideoLan (VLC) under Ubuntu 9.1 (Karmic) (64-bit) with a Haupaugge-150 card. Right now when I want to get the TV feed in through the coax, I first have to run "ivtv-tune -c3" to set the channel for cable.
I've tried adding a line to the vlc.config but no joy. Googling found an answer for Fedora but it doesn't match the files I'm seeing in those directories for Ubuntu.
What I'd like would to have ivtv set the channel automatically at boot or start-up.
I have an old Fisher VHS player with the old 'antenna' connection [one wire] to the TV. It does still work. I connect this to an old Hauppauge 250 pvr card in a box running Ubuntu 10-10.
I want to be able to put old tapes on my disk drive.
Working mainly with MythTv, I can not get it to work. The hardware seems to be working as I have options for tuner1 and other inputs. As channel 4 is no longer 'broadcast' I can't scan for it even with the VCR running.
Would someone please hold my hand an provide the necessary steps to get MythTv working or an alternative.
I have read the five similar threads and numerous other google hits but can't find what I need. Part of my problem is I am also new to Ubuntu and jumping in an out of terminal sessions is no where near what I grew up with in Slackware.
I'm a new Fedora user and I've been downloading some software from the repositories. BUT, I found a problem: I can't play ANY media with ANY player; however, I can hear system sounds but music. I've tried several media players (Exaile, Amarok, Audacius) but none of them can play a song. The format of all my music library is MP3. In the pre-installed Rhytmbox and Totem it says something about codecs and searches for them, but finds none.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have just bought an LG Infinia 42LE8900 Tv. It has a LAN port and has a built in capability to search and display media on the LAN.
I have a PC running Ubuntu 10.10 that I store all my media on and is kept on perminently for that purpose.
When using the Tv, I can not find this or any of the PCs or Laptops running Ubuntu. It can find a Windows 7 virtual machine, but that is not used for media and nor does it have any media within it.
Does anyone know how to make the Ubuntu media visible to the Tv? Seems everything is geared to Microsoft.

I've setup a second wireless router, dedicated to the MAC address of my laptop (debian) and using ssh I can view my email (thunderbird), but I'm not sure what to do to view woodworking videos without downloading. So, do I need to setup tunneling, do I need to view the windowmanager or is there an way to run videos? Anyway I've come along way using HOWTo's with breaking debian. Not sure how to proceed.
Note: The primary wireless router is from my ISP.
I used to use notation player to do this in windows, although it works under wine i don't have the ability to print or print as a pdf file so i was wondering if theres a good alternative
View 7 Replies View RelatedI have a Creative SoundBlaster live SB0490 USB sound card. Alsamixer only shows a mic channel for this card although it has a line in. Is this because it is not supported or how it is meant to be? I have problems with no audio out on a program which directly accesses the card as hw:1 although it is actually using it and wonder if this is all related. Strangely I can play sound through the card using rythmbox.

I am trying to build a media center for music for me and my roommates to use. Basically I want to build a system just for playing music. Idealy (dare i mention itunes in here) I would love a computer just just booted into itunes(orsomething like it (or better) that just was for playing music.
I plan on buying a computer, like a tiny desktop (i dont want to take up a lot of room) with a huge hard drive just for holding music, and needs usb drives/cd drive for loading music onto it (or just a usb drive). Then get a small screen, not huge with a remote that does not run on wife. Also would like a keyboard on the remote if possible.
Anywho whats a good media center, and can I boot just straight into the media center? I would like support for; browse by artist, album and just song name. Also I would like to be able to make playlist within it, and it needs to be able to support a massive amount of songs.
desktop computers to use for this project and remotes that I could use? Also how would you suggest the best way to go about doing this? I would love if it booted straight into the media player. Internet is not a huge deal to me, might connect to internet once just to grab album artwork. So a media player that auto fetches artwork too would also be nice.
I have had MASSIVE problems with media-players. None of the ones I tried have been working flawlessly. They end up hanging and not playing my music after a little while. My 35gb music library is originally an itunes library from OS X, copied to the ntfs partition of my netbook (low specs - 1 gb ram, 1,66ghz atom).
I have tried Exaile, Rhythmbox and Banshee (which I liked the most) from the EB4 repos, but none of them works to a level I can agree with. So I was wondering if anyone either has ideas as to how I can make any of the above players work perfectly or what other players I should try out?
PC seems to run fine in single channel mode but monitor reports no input in dual channel mode and memtest86+ lists from 1-3 errors per pass in single channel mode. Motherboard (Gigabyte P43T-ES3G) can't be set for the 1.65 volts required by the RAM (2x2 of OCZ3P1333LV4GK PC3 10666). The mobo voltage choices are 1.6 or 1.7 volts. I have tried both and increased the MCH voltage from 1.1 v to 1.2 v, but so far can't get it to run in dual channel mode at all and single channel mode seems to run fine but I still get errors in memtest86+. Also tried optimized Bios settings and loosened memory timings (from 7-7-7-16 to 8-8-8-27 and tRFC 60 to 70) and reset Command Rate from 0 to 2. CPU is Core 2 Quad @ 2.4 Ghz, PSU is rated at 400 watts, Video card is Gigabyte GT220.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI am having issues with streaming media (music and movies), well just transfer speeds period, from my Windows Vista desktop PC and my Ubuntu laptop On my Windows PC I have two folders shared: Music and Movies. I also have Media sharing enabled on my Windows PC so that I can stream my music and movies to my Xbox360 and playstation 3. My game consoles have no issues at all with playback speed and quality. My laptop is a dual boot with Windows and Ubuntu.
Streaming to my laptop under Windows is fine. Playback is great and copying files to and from my network shares(Music and Movies folders) is fast. However, under Ubuntu, I've mounted an SMB share to the Windows computer to each folder. When I browse to an MP3 song in VLC, I cannot even listen to it! It'll constantly buffer every few seconds. Forget about trying to watch a movie in VLC either! XBMC and Boxee are useless because they NEVER finish scanning the network folders to even add my content - let alone try to stream them.
Trying to copy 89MB (an album worth of MP3s) from the Windows server to Ubuntu was going to take 8hours! Something is definitely wrong here and I just can't figure it out. Should I be connecting to Windows using some other networking method besides SMB? My network is setup with my Windows Desktop connected via 100MB ethernet to a wireless router. The Router is dual broadcasting in G and N modes. I have excellent connection strength and full network rate (54MB for G) on my laptop. Again, networking is fine when using Windows on the laptop.
