I have a Samsung N135 notebook which boots well from USB. When I travel, I am afraid to damage the disk due to shocks. When I boot from USB and dismounts the build-in disk are the heads parked away from the platters? Is the disk not spinning at all? Is there a command to force power off of the disk!
I cannot log into the normal user account after shutting down the OPENSUSE 11.1 system by cutting off electricity. The system always returns to the login page which requires to choose account id and enter passwd even when I type in correct normal user id and passwd. The root account can be used.
The following script should make screen blanking work without disabling gnome-power-manager code...
This script can also be called from a panel launcher (with ./<scriptname> if it is in $HOME). It will not disable the power manager even though the process disappears from the system monitor. The "if" condition is necessary because SIGHUP will return an error if the process doesn't exist.
If you want a bash command, add this to $HOME/.bashrc:
# The following cannot be implemented as an alias # and it cannot be called from a launcher, more's the pity dark () code...
Iam trying to alter a bootable Debian install CD based on the instructions [URL] this is the command to rebuild the iso image as specified at the above link.
I have created an iso image from a RHEL5.4 disc using mkisofs. mkisofs -A "Red Hat Linux 5.4" -V "Red Hat Linux 5.4" -v -U -J -R -T -b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -o /tmp/RHEL54-x86_64-dvd.iso .
It creates the iso image no problem, however when I go to boot a new server from the disc I get the boot prompt, hit enter, answer the language and keyboard questions and then it throws the following error: "The Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server CD and press OK to retry". Perhaps I need to specify in my mkisofs command that its supposed to be iso9660? This is on a RHEV virtual machine.
Offlate I installed F11 i586 on my laptop. F11 shares the hard disk with Vista Home Premium 32-bit. The problem is that when running F11 (or even Ubuntu), my system shut off suddenly(not a normal OS shut down, but a sudden power off without any warning). This could have been a hardware trouble(heating) but it doesn't happen with Vista. Machine specifications: Maker: Toshiba Model: Satellite L305D-S5881 AMD Turion X2 Dual Core Mobile Processor RM-70 3072 MB 800 MHz SDRAM I don't want to open up my machine unnecessarily, if it isn't a hardware issue. I am not sure how to verify the bit length of the machine and the OS and does it create a compatibility issue ? Your advise would be highly appreciated.
I'm facing problem while making .iso from CD.I used the following commandmkisofs -o cdi.iso clusterwarewhere 'clustereware' is the content i need.Once done, checking this cdi.iso file noticed that certain file names are trimmed/corrupted like from .oui to _ouirunInstaller.sh to runInstalike this many file name changed.
I have an image with a autorun.inf file on it and wanted to make it bootable on a simple cd (700Mb). Untill now I tried and failed to make it bootable. The image is on the cd but the cd won't boot.I tried also under windows (with n?r0) and failed again... no way to boot on this cd with the image I created.I need more informations or how toes ^^ to use the "El-Torito" features for the mkisofs utility that I use to create my .iso files
I have an iso file that I want to mount. It turned out to contain only data so I need to make it into a working iso file using mkisofs. For some reason it was done in a couple of seconds while the file is more then 7Gb. The output is....nothing. I looked inside /media/isodrive and there is nothing there. The original img is suddenly only 363Mb :s.
This is the commandline I used: sven@sven-XPS-L501X:~/Desktop$ sudo mkisofs -o shaun.white.iso /media/isodrive/ [sudo] password for sven: I: -input-charset not specified, using utf-8 (detected in locale settings) 2.69% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:42 2011 5.38% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:23 2011 8.06% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:17 2011 10.76% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:14 2011 13.44% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 16.13% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 18.82% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:15 2011 21.51% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:14 2011 24.19% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:13 2011 26.88% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 29.57% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 32.26% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 34.94% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:13 2011 37.63% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 40.32% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 43.01% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 45.69% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 48.39% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:13 2011 51.07% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 53.76% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 56.45% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 59.14% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 61.82% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 64.51% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 67.20% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 69.89% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 72.57% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 75.26% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 77.95% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 80.64% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 83.32% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 86.02% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 88.70% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 91.39% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:11 2011 94.08% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 96.77% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 99.45% done, estimate finish Fri Mar 4 19:04:12 2011 Total translation table size: 0 Total rockridge attributes bytes: 0 Total directory bytes: 0 Path table size(bytes): 10 Max brk space used 0 186021 extents written (363 MB)
I had no problems doing my video editing with my home videos whether they are dv or the mpeg4.avc hd format. I was able to use KDEdvdauthorwizard easily to make a burnable playable iso from my mpegs that I made from avidemux2. I upgraded many packages and since then I cannot make an iso that I can play at all.
Also, dvdstyler and qdvdauthor crash. KDEdvdauthorwizard says there is a problem with my transcode so will not make an iso anymore. I have tried many versions of transcode and none are accepted. Just a few weeks ago KDEdvdauthorwizard worked great for making my iso.
I decided to experiment with tovid and it makes a dvd that will not play in either of my dvdplayers. It plays poorly on the computer. I tried to make an iso out of my mpeg with mkisofs and that .iso will not open or play. I used mediainfo on the iso and this is what I got:
mediainfo output.iso General Complete name : output.iso Format : MPEG-PS
[code]....
My system is: dual core opteron 185 2.6ghz, 1000 gigs of hard drive, 3 gigs ram memory, onboard video nvidia hdtv capable. I can play hd movies just fine on my system. Movie editing is fast, too.
Since the yum repository for FC 6 is no longer available, I'm looking for a place to find the latest package of mkisofs that can be used on FC6. I could not find a decent place to download it from.
I have a problem with burning some disks. I believe the problem to be when the file sizes are large. using suse 11.3 x 64 and updates done. k3b version 2.0.1-1pm 2.7 burned normal dvd yesterday with3.5 Gb + 1.5Gb files. Tried burning to BD-R disk with 11.5 Gb file. I have burned blu ray disks before with my machine but used nero, I would prefer to use k3b as should do this. I get error of mkisofs crashed and following error log
I am using Oracle Enterprise Linux version 4 update 7. I would like to create and burn iso images via the terminal. Assume I have a folder called movies in directory /root/Desktop.I would like to create a movie.iso image ans burn it using mkisofs and cdrecord.
I have an extracted ISO and I'd like to put the files back into an ISO in such a way that the menus are restored, like the orginal ISO. I am not having any luck with this though, currently the ISO does not play at all (usually gxine can open raw isos and run the menues as if it were put in the dvd drive).
I use Squeeze with Xfce. My problem is that recently (after the xfce updates) the xfce power manager doesnt react to the power button - it is set to suspend. I dont have gnome-power manager or anything like it running. If i reboot the computer, the power button will work but if i suspend and resume, it doesnt work again. The computer is built on an Asus M3N78-VM mobo (2GB RAM/Athlon3200+ single core).
I am using Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit and I purchased a new ALFA AWUS036H wireless card. I would like to know if this "1Watt" wireless card is configured for full power. iwlist wlan0 txpower results:
wlan0 unknown transmit-power information. Current Tx-Power=27 dBm (501 mW). It appears to me that I should be able to increase the power. "iwpriv wlan0 highpower 1" does not work. Do I need to patch the new default driver that comes with Ubuntu 10.04 64-bit with the aircrack one following these directions:[URL]...? Monitor mode and a injection tests seem to work fine with the driver I have installed.
I'm looking for any power monitoring devices for Linux to allow monitoring power quality, voltage changes, and outages. This would be for North American three phase power system. I want to have this data fed live to my own program. It should be something much better than just jury-rigging a circuit to fee the power waveform into 2 or 3 audio cards.
I had unplugged my PC last night as sometimes there's storms at night this morning I plugged in PC and the power light is blinking and the PC wont come on at all tried different power cord, same result
PC is a AMD athlon64 3300+ 2.4ghz SiS graphics
probably the power-supply or what?
If it is the power supply, how do I find new one as I've never had to replace anything on it or any other PC?
Also, I really need access to the hard drive but it's a weird hard drive and was wondering if I could put that hard drive in my K7 PC, which already has 2 drives in it can a pc have 3 drives? do I have to add/have another ribbon cable for 3rd drive?
My headphones broke so audio only works on the right speaker. As a temporary fix I want to force all sounds to play in mono in the right speaker. I run Ubuntu 9.10. Is there a way to complete this?
I sshed into a Linux machine (bash shell) from a public Windows machine (in our lab) and forgot to log out. I'm now back at my seat in another room and I am too lazy to walk back and log out that session; I can ssh into the Linux machine from my current PC though. Can I force-logout the other session from a new SSH session?
When I ssh to the Linux box from my current PC and type users command, I can see that I'm still logged in there; my name is listed twice - one for the current session and another for the session from lab PC.
I don't have root privileges on the said machine, but I guess that shouldn't matter as I'm just trying to log out myself.
I'm trying to upgrade to Firefox 5 on RHEL5, and am getting the following error:
./firefox-bin: /usr/lib/libstdc++.so.6: version `GLIBCXX_3.4.9' not found (required by /home/isdtc/tdiakiw/bin/firefox5/firefox/libxul.so)
As the computer is a work machine,I don't have access to update the libraries directly. To try and get around this I downloaded the libstdc++.so.6.0.10 library.strings libstdc++.so.6.0.10 | grep GLIBCXX shows:
GLIBCXX_3.4 GLIBCXX_3.4.1 GLIBCXX_3.4.2[code]....
Is there some way of forcing firefox to use this library instead? I have tried adding the directory containing the new library (with a so name) to LD_LIBRARY_PATH and then running, but I'm still getting the same error message
I created a group, and after adding the users into this group, they have a /home/worksharing that is shared
Code:
addgroup teamnight --gid 2578
So that everyone of the teamnight can read/write data of the /home/worksharing , how can this folder be forced, so that all from it e.g. subdirectories, directories, files,... will take the GID group number 2578 of teamnight?
running Linux release 2.4.19-uc0, build #511 embedded on a device. It is stripped down to a very minimal configuration and so many of the normal commands are not present.I'm trying to force a reboot from an application I've got running. I've tried the following:
I do 'mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt'. Only an example. When I mount image, ls outputs john_smi.txt. So it has shorten to 8.3 and translated ' ' into '_'. This is in accordance with the manual, although it doesn't say the conversion will be done.
Quote:
-iso-level level ......................... With all iso9660 levels from 1..3, all filenames are restricted to upper case letters, numbers and the underscore (_). ...........................
However, as it did not reject the file name, it should have converted it to all upper case, it seems to me. And -iso-level 2|3 does the same thing.
Code:
root@darkstar:~# mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt Total translation table size: 0 Total rockridge attributes bytes: 0 Total directory bytes: 0
right now all of our users are able to log in to other user using su as root.Because root privilege is necessary for our work. we r using LDAP authentication(centralized)..
What we want to do to disable su usage to log in as other user?
We have just installed VNC. It seems to work fine. If we connect to a remote system using VNC, on say DISPLAY 5, it works and we can run our applications. If another person wants to view this session, they can also connect to DISPLAY 5, and it is fine.
However, if you are just sitting at your own system, without using VNC, and someone connects to your system using VNC to DISPLAY 0, so you can show them what you are doing, they do not see your session, they see a plain startup session, not the session in which you are running your applications... How do you let VNC users see your normal non-VNC session? Have I configured something wrongly? We are new to VNC!
For personal reasons (I'm hearing impaired) I need my linux machine to produce mono downmixed sound. Downmixed, not just single channel.
Is there any possibility to force such behavior in ALSA / PulseAudio server? Hardware mixing (short-circuiting L and R channels with some resistors) is not possible at the moment. I'm looking for a software solution to mix two channels into one.
I know that some media players have this functionality, but I'd like the whole system (ie games, flash applications, etc) to produce downmixed audio.
