General :: Use Mkisofs To Rebuild Iso Image?
Mar 11, 2010
Iam trying to alter a bootable Debian install CD based on the instructions [URL] this is the command to rebuild the iso image as specified at the above link.
Code:
$ mkisofs -o debian-503-amd64-CD-1-preseed.iso
-r -J -no-emul-boot -boot-load-size 4
-b isolinux/isolinux.bin
-c isolinux/boot.cat ./debian-503 2> /dev/null
I've read the man pages for all the options specified and made sure that all paths are relative. However, the output iso file is not being generated.

I have created an iso image from a RHEL5.4 disc using mkisofs.
mkisofs -A "Red Hat Linux 5.4" -V "Red Hat Linux 5.4" -v -U -J -R -T
-b isolinux/isolinux.bin -c isolinux/boot.cat -no-emul-boot
-boot-load-size 4 -boot-info-table -o /tmp/RHEL54-x86_64-dvd.iso .
It creates the iso image no problem, however when I go to boot a new server from the disc I get the boot prompt, hit enter, answer the language and keyboard questions and then it throws the following error:
"The Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server CD was not found in any of your CDROM drives. Please insert the Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server CD and press OK to retry".
Perhaps I need to specify in my mkisofs command that its supposed to be iso9660? This is on a RHEV virtual machine.

I have a Red Hat Enterprise (AS) 4.8 system and I need to know how to totally rebuild the system from dump tape. I have been making some full level 0 dumps of the system to the attached DAT72 tape drive... In the case the boot disk goes south, I need to reload from tape, onto a new disk drive. I know how to do this in Solaris. I assume you boot from CD to like a mini-root, then configure and mount the drive on temp mount points, restore the sys data, then load the "boot blocks" (like installboot on solaris).

I need to find a program or a way to edit the partition table and set the values and addresses for the partition boundaries manually. A while ago I had a very messy data loss that left me with a disk full of data but without a partition table (and without file indexes for some of the partitions on the disk). So, for recovery reasons I need to try lots of combinations of starting and ending addresses for each partition. Additionally it would be extra nice if I could do this with a live cd since I don't have the faulty drive attached to a working computer at the moment.

I have a 5 disk raid 5 array that is composed of SATA A:0,1; SATA B: 0,1, and SATA C:0, and one of the disks (SATA A:0) recently went bad on me. I have an ICP raid controller that is about 5 years old. I replaced SATA A:0. After rebooting, I went into the controller and verified that it saw the disk in the hard-disk info section...there I noticed that in the "status" section, that the SATA C:0, SATA B:1 disks were listed as being "in array", the SATA A disks were blank, and the SATA B:0 disk was listed as "fragment". When I go into the "repair array" section, the controller tells me that there are no arrays that are in failure, error, or need to be rebuilt.
This puzzles me, as I thought the controller would know that the array needs to be rebuilt after replacing the disk and I don't see a way to initiate a rebuild. If I just let the server boot after replacing the disk, then I get back that there are the correct number of disks in the raid 5 and that it is ready, however, the screen then goes blank and I get a blinking cursor and the system seems to hang. There are no activity lights on any of the drives associated with the raid 5, which makes me think that the system is not rebuilding the array at this point.

I have an iso file that I want to mount. It turned out to contain only data so I need to make it into a working iso file using mkisofs. For some reason it was done in a couple of seconds while the file is more then 7Gb. The output is....nothing. I looked inside /media/isodrive and there is nothing there. The original img is suddenly only 363Mb :s.
This is the commandline I used:
sven@sven-XPS-L501X:~/Desktop$ sudo mkisofs -o shaun.white.iso /media/isodrive/
[sudo] password for sven:
I: -input-charset not specified, using utf-8 (detected in locale settings)

I had no problems doing my video editing with my home videos whether they are dv or the mpeg4.avc hd format. I was able to use KDEdvdauthorwizard easily to make a burnable playable iso from my mpegs that I made from avidemux2. I upgraded many packages and since then I cannot make an iso that I can play at all.
Also, dvdstyler and qdvdauthor crash. KDEdvdauthorwizard says there is a problem with my transcode so will not make an iso anymore. I have tried many versions of transcode and none are accepted. Just a few weeks ago KDEdvdauthorwizard worked great for making my iso.
I decided to experiment with tovid and it makes a dvd that will not play in either of my dvdplayers. It plays poorly on the computer. I tried to make an iso out of my mpeg with mkisofs and that .iso will not open or play. I used mediainfo on the iso and this is what I got:
mediainfo output.iso
General
Complete name : output.iso
Format : MPEG-PS
[code]....
My system is: dual core opteron 185 2.6ghz, 1000 gigs of hard drive, 3 gigs ram memory, onboard video nvidia hdtv capable. I can play hd movies just fine on my system. Movie editing is fast, too.

I have a problem with burning some disks. I believe the problem to be when the file sizes are large. using suse 11.3 x 64 and updates done. k3b version 2.0.1-1pm 2.7 burned normal dvd yesterday with3.5 Gb + 1.5Gb files. Tried burning to BD-R disk with 11.5 Gb file. I have burned blu ray disks before with my machine but used nero, I would prefer to use k3b as should do this. Kernel 2.6, Slackware 12.0
mkisofs 2.01
I do 'mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt'. Only an example. When I mount image, ls outputs john_smi.txt. So it has shorten to 8.3 and translated ' ' into '_'. This is in accordance with the manual, although it doesn't say the conversion will be done.
Quote:
-iso-level level
.........................
With all iso9660 levels from 1..3, all filenames are restricted to upper case letters, numbers and the underscore (_).
...........................
However, as it did not reject the file name, it should have converted it to all upper case, it seems to me. And -iso-level 2|3 does the same thing.
Code:
root@darkstar:~# mkisofs -iso-level 1 -o image John Smith.txt

I've lost the disk that contained the /boot directory of a 9.10 installation. All other important partitions/directories are on a raid0 and working ok.So, I started trying to repair the system by booting from Ubuntu 9.10 live cd, creating a new partition on a new disk for /boot, mounting all partitions in its place for a chroot environment, doing the chroot, and then trying several reinstalls of packages which I supposed where enough for rebuilding /boot (linux kernel & grub), then I ran something like grub-setup which installed a new MBR on the new disk.Everything went ok, but when I reboot the new installation it gets me to a text mode login screen and of course I want to recover the previous configuration which ran gdm and auto login into GNOME I had before. After that I tried reinstalling some other packages like gdm but now the boot process "hangs" on the boot splash screen.

I am trying to use Banshee to sync my 5th generation iPod nano on a Lenovo laptop. When I plug the iPod in, it is recognized just fine by Banshee, however when I click on the iPod icon it tells me that it is unable to read the iPod because it has been used with a version of iTunes that saves a version of the database that Banshee can't recognize.
All of this is fine. I click on rebuild iPod database since I have no intention of using iTunes in the future with this iPod, and I don't mind losing the playlists or songs on the iPod (I have them all on the computer). The database rebuilds normally from all appearances, and after a short time I am able to read all songs on the iPod and transfer things back and forth.
The frustration comes into play with the fact that next time I load up the iPod on Banshee, it asks for the exact same process. It is unable to read the iPod, needs to rewrite the database, etc..
Is there some way to permanently alter the database that I'm missing, or is this an issue with 5th generation compatibility?

I'm currently trying to rebuild the Seamonkey package so as to have only the browser, and not all the remaining cruft like Mail, News, Composer and Dishwasher. I remember having done this for a few years - Netscape also allowed to do that - and it went well. Basically, all you had to do was to replace the --enable-application=suite option by something like --enable-application=browser, and then disable the other apps explicitly with some option like --disable-calendar, --disable-mailnews, --disable-composer, if I remember correctly.
I've tried to rebuild the Seamonkey source with a modified SlackBuild, but to no avail. ./configure --help shows me some options in that direction, but I have yet to find out some magic combination to get it to work. --enable-application=APP doesn't seem to know the browser-only option anymore, and defining various --disable-mailnews and --disable-calendar options results in compilation errors.
