I just loaded Suse 11.3 on my laptop. I can't get my wireless network to work. I tried via Yast and then switched back to Network Manager but nothing works.NM says that it is running, however I have no way to access it. No icon and I don't know where it is located or how to add to desktop panel.

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm finding the NetworkManager applet very confusing.When I start up at a new location I can use the "Connect to Other Network..." menu item to bring up the list of available networks, and I'd expect that by selecting one of these and clicking "Connect", then configuring and clicking OK, I'd get a connection. Instead the dialog just goes away and nothing else happens. Is something broken with NetworkManager, or am I misunderstanding how this is supposed to work?
By switching back and forth between NetworkManager and ifup I'm eventually able to establish a connection to a new access point, but it's been a painful process.I've also encountered a problem reported by others, where when my system fails to suspend/resume properly the /var/lib/NetworkManager/NetworkManager.state has NetworkingEnabled=false and I need to manually edit this before restarting networking... but that's a separate issue, and I can work around it with the manual edit (or just add a startup script to do this automatically).

The card is recognized by System--admin--network as the correct card (BCM43XG) and assigned eth1. However, NetworkManager shows no wireless network. I have a great signal on the same machine if I boot into a Windows partition.
I've spent AGES getting ndiswrapper to work on FC11 with my USR 5416 card.
Now it's finally working and Networkmanager can see my local wireless network. Problem is when I try to connect and it asks for the wep key, the encryption I'm using is not an option.
My network uses a 64 bit ASCII passphrase. My options when connecting are:

I am trying to use CentOS 5.4 to set up a secure laptop, largely because of it's SELinux functionality. Unfortunately I couldn't get wireless to work properly using the default NetworkManager so I installed wicd. Initially it buggered up my whole installation but after relabelling files using SEL I can now use my system again. but.. I can't use it with SELinux enabled, as it denies the required accesses for wicd to work. I also get similar SELinux denials for wpa_supplicant. A couple of snippets from /var/log/audit/audit.log -

After reading and trying tons of tutorials and several OS reinstalls, I'm stuck trying to load wireless on my Dell Vostro 1400 laptop. Before you say search forums! I hurry to tell I did. No solution seems to work. WLAN chipset - Broadcom's BCM4311 / BCM 2050. 1st scenario - native CentOS 5.3 drivers Although CentOS recognize WLAN card and displays it's name correctly, neither network or NetworkManager sees any of wireless networks.
2nd scenario - Broadcom's drivers Most know Broadcom has released Linux drivers. I had some more luck with them than in 1st scenario although problems occur. After successfully compiling Kernel module, wireless networks are discovered and can be successfully connected but no pages load. It seems like DNS is not resolving at all and page loading timeouts instantly. Tested on TKIP-encrypted network.
how to get my wireless connection to work on the network. I don't see anywhere to go to see if the wireless adapter is even setup in Fedora. My other question is when I boot up and get the options to select the OS the first one is Fedora but the other one says it is other.
I think that is is booting up the recovery partion of Windows. I don't know how to change it so that it is looking at the correct portition. I know it has something to do with the menu.lst file but when I try to open it says that I do not have premission. I am not sure where to go to edit it.
I'm using a hp dualprocessor athlon 11 g42-415dx notebook pc and my wireless wont work i put the passcode in wicd program and it says bad password. So i tried the pin code on the wireless router and that didnt work so am i doing something wrong or is there something wrong with the hardware? i got the wired connection to work but cant get wireless its a little more complex.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a wireless connection to the internet, as well as a wired connection to a local network. When the wired connection to my local network is enabled, the wireless connection to the internet no longer works until I disconnect the ethernet cable.
(This setup used to work just fine when I was using Windows, but now doesn't seem to work. I wasn't using IP aliasing in Windows, but I am now, which may be causing the problem.)
My original connection to the internet was a wired one, at eth0, so once I got wireless enabled (on eth1), I created an IP alias to my local network of eth0:1 which is a static IP on my local network. The only configuration I did at all was to add a file named /etc/sysconfig/network-scripts/ifcfg-eth0:1, with the following contents:

(Also I use 'service NetworkManager start/stop' entirely rather than 'service network start/stop' to manage my connnections. i.e. I did 'chkconfig network off' when setting everything up initially.)
A fresh installation of ubuntu 9.10 stopped my DSL internet connection. sudo pppoeconf solved the problem of net, but NetworkManager applet in panel now not working. it says wired networks, device not managed.

I just got myself a Dell Inspiron 1440. And decided to install my favorite distro Debian. I got the installation to go with no issue and all seems to be working fine. However the wireless isn't working. NetworkManager doesnt even detect a wireless card. I followed the instructions here and installed the b43-fwcutter and then issued the modprobe b43 and modprobe b43legacy commands. Then I issued the iwconfig command and this was the output.

I remember that I did configure my desktop PC for wired and wireless connections since openSUSE 11.2, 11.3 and 11.4. Currently I have openSUSE11.4 x86_64 KDE. Today I happen to notice that the icon for NetworkManager in the taskbar has been replaced with a red X. I discovered that Network Manager only shows VPN tab, whereas Wired and Wireless tabs are greyed out. The strange thing is I still have Internet connection with the CAT5 cable being plugged in. I can still configure wired and wireless connections via YAST but I cannot fix Network Manager settings.

The icon has this small "x" and when mouseover it says "No network conncection". Moreover when left clicking it, it says

While I was looking for the solution a came across this post by an Ubuntu developer who says:network-manager-applet displays the connectivity state of network-manager's managed interfaces not every interface. So the title "network manager says disconnected but is connected and working" is actually misleading. The interface is connected and working but not from network-manager's point of view since it is not managing the interface. Additionally, in Lucid now network-manager applet displays nothing now for non-managed interfaces so is less misleading. You can check to see whether or not an interface is managed by network-manager by using the command line too nm-tool. You'll see "State: unmanaged" for unmanaged interfaces.
I had a google of this but can't find anything useful. I use networkmanager to configure my wireless card. Currently this only works when I'm logged in to KDE. If I log out the system loses the network connection. Is there a way to make it persistent using NetworkManager?

I just moved my Linux/Windows dual-booting laptop from a desk with an Ethernet jack to a desk that is within the WiFi range of our 2WIRE integrated modem/WiFi/ethernet router. I use GNOME with NetworkManager, and though NetworkManager reports that everything is fine with the connection, I am unable to access anything outside the local network, though I can access the modem/router and the other computers perfectly. However, when I either plug it into an Ethernet cable or boot into Windows, it works just fine.
ifconfig and iwconfig both report that the connection works, the router's firewall is set to allow all outbound traffic, and the laptop's firewall is also set to allow all inbound traffic. How is this even possible, and more importantly, how could I get it fixed?

EDIT: Whoops. Just realized that there is a Networking subforum. Apologies. In 10.04, I am able to get to the dialog in NM that asks for the network name and security for the creation of a new wireless network. However, the "Connect" button is grayed out and filling out all fields doesn't allow me to press it. I assume that this means that either there is a problem with my configuration or that my network card is not supported. Here is the lshw entry for my wireless card:

EDIT2: Well, I was able to make an ad hoc connection via "Edit Connections" This seems to be a bug in the NetworkManager dialog.
I just installed SUSE in a VMware to test it out. A problem i've had with VMware before was getting the wireless to work. I was wondering if anyone knows a way to get the wireless to work over the VMware and in SUSE. I know this may not particularly be a SUSE question but all I saw in the VMware forums was one response that said it was not possible.

OS - Ubuntu 10.04 64 bit
Issue - My wifi connects to the network properly and shows connection established. But I am not able to browse. I tried ping and I didn't got any response. But I was able to get response when I use ethernet (wired connection) and I am able to browse. No issues with wifi card as my wifi is working properly from Windows and with the same network. I did a complete update again before posting this and it is yet to be resolved. Here are the output of some commonly asked outputs with wifi enabled and connected:

I installed Ubuntu on a machine after erasing everything else and the wireless has never worked. It says that the wireless has already shut down even though it recognizes the wireless network and my other non-linux machines see the network and work fine.

I tried going through the terminal window and following the instructions that was offered to others. I'm just wondering if my hardware is different, if I need drivers, if my permissions aren't correct.
1. I recently received a Sony Vaio laptop model # VGN-FE770G from a friend, and I'm enjoying running Ubuntu.
2. I followed another thread that suggested to change some lines in /etc/network/interfaces, but I don't have permission to edit this file. I don't really have the need to set up multiple users on my laptop, so how can I change my permissions to root? (Or is it a good idea even?) Should I log in as root?
3. How can I set my laptop up to be flexible with network selections, using hardware: (built-in camera and microphone for example), and useful applications?

I've been running CentOS on my laptop for a few weeks now. I don't know what happened today, but when I boot up, the NetworkManager wont show up on the panel, and I don't have access to wireless networks or Internet. I tried booting my Windows partition and the wireless works fine. I can't seem to remember any latest change I've made aside from the wallpaper =) Any ideas where I should start debugging? My card seems to work, the network manager even finds the router, but i just cant get a connection. I followed the steps of the "Getting Your Wireless to Work" thread and these are the results:
