General :: Netbook Keyboard No Longer Working On Archlinux/fluxbox/ROX?
Aug 12, 2010
I installed Archlinux yesterday on my Aspire One netbook. I installed fluxbux window manager with the ROX file manager/desktop manager.Everything was working fine until I was walking through a guide to set up the Fn keysto use the keyboard hotkeys for changing the brightness and audio settings here: [URL]I used xmodmap to set additional short cuts. Every since, I can't use my keyboard when I run 'startx'. My laptop touch mouse is working but I noticed the cursor speed has slowed down drasticly since I input the above changes.
I tried putting in 'setxkbmap no' in my ~/.xinitrc, 'no' was the language which is set up in my /etc/X11/xorg.conf and was working before. I also reverted to a back-up of my xorg.conf which I had saved a few hours before, which also didn't work.What could the problem could be here? How can I ensure my keyboard is being properly initialise when I start up Xorg/fluxbox?

I am placing apps into my fluxbox startup file as per the instructions, however nothing starts up except fluxbox.It doesn't matter what app I try, so it isn't an app problem.
here is my startup file:
#!/bin/sh
#
# fluxbox startup-script:
[code]...
I have also tried tests such as "touch ~/testwoked" and such, nothing works.It makes no difference if the file is executable or not.

I have a home-theater computer hooked up to my TV. It has a keyboard of its own, but I don't like to have to drag it out just to queue up a movie. The thing is, I can use my netbook computer to wirelessly ssh into the home-theater computer and do all kinds of things...copy and transcode files, etc--but nothing GUI. I would like to be able to simply run mplayer from my ssh session and have it show up on the TV. When I ssh into my HTPC and try to run mplayer I get "no X session". Is there some way to do this, so that I can either launch graphical programs on the host computer's x-server, or totally use the keyboard/mouse of my netbook as if they were connected directly to the HTPC?

I bought this not too long ago and it worked great in my ubuntu 8.04 install. When in windows I decided to pair the bluetooth combo with a different bluetooth dongle. After changing it back to the original MS dongle (which I used in ubuntu) the keyboard no longer responds in ubuntu. It works in the CMOS, it works on my windows computer, but not in ubuntu anymore. Mouse works fine, and so does the touch pad on the keyboard.
Is there any way around this? I've tried re-pairing, and waiting a very long time...

I have a Dvd of Slackware as well as an Iso image of Arch.
All i know about the difference between Slackware and Arch is the stability, i.e. Slackware is more stable than Arch !
Is that all or there is some other difference which should be considered ?
Which one out of the above two, should i go for and why ?

I'm having a little issue managing my iphone on archlinux+kde. This is the only way I got it to sync.
sudo killall usbmuxd
sudo usbmuxd -f -v
And then the only program that recognices the device is Clementine and it works quite fine. What I'd like to do is to make that automaticaly, so I wouldn't have to do it everytime i turn on my computer.

Ubuntu no longer boots up on my Archos 10 netbook, it's been working fine for the whole month I've had it but now it simply sticks to the Ubuntu loading screen and doesn't progress further. Windows still boots fine so my guess is it's not a hard drive failure that's causing it.

My MBP fails to boot Arch. This is what I did to install ArchLinux. Install rEFIT.
Partition using disk utility such that first one is Mac partition, second is Arch & the third ie the last one is windows.
Then put Windows 7 CD, select it from rEFIT and install it. Similar, install ArchLinux just as I did for windows.
Then finally to install the GRUB, I issued the command $grub-install --root-directory=/mnt/arch - recheck /dev/sda3 (after mounting my /dev/sda3 to /mnt/arch).
This is the exact error and then it drops to recovery:
Error after typing exit:
I have tried rootfstype too. No success.
My menu.lst (I have tried /dev/sda3 too):

I using clonezilla-live-1.2.5-35-i686 to create an image of my Advent 4211 netbook, this netbook is essentially a MSI Wind. The image is to be saved to an external USB drive. I have used Clonezilla before with success, and a few failures, hope this isn't another.The LiveCD boots fine, I select the first video mode, it then tries to start but reports an 'undefined video mode number :317' it then offers the option to carry on or 'Enter' to try other options or 'Space' to continue, I have tried both options but they end up with the same out come, which is the following.
It does a bunch of hardware detection, 'usbcore' etc etc, then gets stuck at 'libata version 3.00 loaded' for around 5 minutes, then eventually moves onto 'clocksource tsc unstable (delta = -6575758ns) Time:hpet clocksource has been installed', stick on this for around 3 minutes and then eventually I end up with'/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off' Is there a solution to this? Or just have to accept that it will now work with my hardware? The odd thing here is that people have used Clonezilla successfully with this type of Netbook, I also read that people and issue but offered no solution.

I just replaced my RAM, and searched for the best way to do a memory test in Ubuntu. I ran across this page:
[URL]
...which says:
Quote:
Turn On or Restart the system Hold down Shift to bring up the GRUB menu. Use the arrow keys to move to the entry labeled Ubuntu, memtest86+ Press Enter. The test will run automatically, and continue until you end it by pressing the Escape key
Allow the test to run for at least one full pass
So I did exactly that. The GRUB menu appeared, but I had no keyboard control, and thus couldn't select anything. I've tried rebooting several times with different keyboards, and they all show 3 green lights at the very beginning of boot, but become unavailable by the time GRUB appears.
So I booted to a Live CD and the keyboard worked just fine inside that session. But it's still gone during boot. When I'm booting without a CD in the drive (booting to the internal HD as usual), it goes straight to the GRUB list, with no keyboard control, and I'm stuck indefinitely.
how to either bypass this stuck GRUB screen, or somehow restore normal keyboard functionality during early boot?

As I said, it was working fine until this morning.I have no idea how to even diagnose this.

I have just picked up Ubuntu after thinking how bad windows is for a long time.
I am trying to install it (10.04 Netbook Remix) on my HP Mini netbook from a USB, but I have a problem. During the installation process I get to the selection of the keyboard layout (question three) and the it just freezes after I make a selection.
I've trawled around the forum a bit, but I couldn't seem to find an answer, although a few people have had the same problem.

I've had Ubuntu 9.10 x64 installed on my Asus G60JX-RBBX05 Laptop for a few weeks now, and for the most part its been working pretty well.Then a couple of days ago, I suddenly noticed I could no longer use the numeric keypad. This seemed completely out of the blue, but its possible I received an automatic Update through the Update Manager that hosed it or something. I'm really not sure.Has anyone had a similar experience

I have no idea why but my keyboard suddenly stopped working in X when I started my computer this morning! The keyboard still works fine in the command line mode, though, so I can do stuff as long as it does not involve a GUI. (NetworkManager only works in X).

Can anyone tell me what I can do to fix this as wireless is obviously vital in a laptop. BTW the wireless waqs working fine while the machine had Vista on it.

I have quite a strange issue with (supposedly) my keyboard mappings.
while using GNOME session:
lowercase 'v' is not working as it should - no keypress is reaching apps; while I'm holding V key depressed, gnome-terminal console shows a hollow cursor (just like when input focus is in some other window) and nothing is printed; uppercase 'V' is working just fine (that is Shift+V); if I press AltGr + V, a lowercase 'v' is printed; if I'm typing quickly, sometimes pressing V key to get a lowercase 'v' is not just being ignored, but also the next symbol typed is swallowed and not printed out; this issue is present for the USA keyboard layout, as well as for the Russian keyboard layout.
while using TTY console (Alt+Ctrl+F1, etc):
everything works as it should (i.e. lowercase ' is printed whenever I press it);
no problems with the physical keyboard.
I haven't done any editing of any gnome/X configs and/or keyboard mappings.
This is my Ubuntu 10.04 Linux version:
$ uname -a
Linux hostname 2.6.32-25-generic #44-Ubuntu SMP Fri Sep 17 20:05:27 UTC 2010 x86_64 GNU/Linux
Update - stty output:
$ stty -a
speed 38400 baud; rows 43; columns 151; line = 0;
intr = ^C; quit = ^; erase = ^?; kill = ^U; eof = ^D; eol = M-^?; eol2 = M-^?; swtch = M-^?; start = ^Q; stop = ^S; susp = ^Z; rprnt = ^R; werase = ^W;

I don't know when this started happening, but my shortcuts such as Super+D to minimize all and go to the desktop and Ctrl+Alt+T to open a terminal, etc, have stopped working.
Other shortcuts, such as Alt+F1 and Alt+F2 work correctly, as well as the compiz ones.

Why i cant change from 800x480 to 1024x600, that this model of EEE pc doesnt support anything higher than 800x480 at the 10:1 ratio...
Firstly my question is, is it ACTUALLY possible to 'overclock' this type of netbook to run a higher res?
Im running ubtuntu netbook remix 10.04 and am new to linux (again, so sorry) so be nice, and ive tried getting my head around this 'sudo' stuff, and the xorg.conf file (which is nowhere to be found) and ive even tried a program calld astray but im pretty sure ive exhausted my patience as trying to self-teach . . .
And ive also tried to much around with xrandr or whatever that command was.. but i cant really get my head around it, and it kept telling me the resolution didnt exist ect...
